did anyone in the UK see the channel 4 news? it had a 5 minute bit on google talk, it seems to suggest that they would be doing a pc to phone service in talk in future plus it went over other google apps. in fact i got the distinct impression that they were advertising talk and gmail. ae google allowed to bribe news programmes????????

it was all over the newspapers as well up london on the news boards in front of the papers, i got the feeling something weird happened today.....

This is getting ridiculous...just opened beta last night and I already have more users than my main client, MSN. :p

Same, LOL. Google is the only person who could open an IM client and have hundreds of thousands of users the next day.

I didn't see it on C4 news, but while I was in the car, I heard there was a short bit about it on the radio. They were talking mainly about VOIP, and strangely, not mentioning the instant messaging.

I think it should have the following features:

1: File transfer - Required!

2: Emoticons - Any messenger without emoticons gives the user an impression it is old.

3: Avatars - Only if the option can be hidden or turned off to keep the minimalism look.

4: Conversation logging - Password protected would be nice too.

5: Webcam support - Replacing the avatars possibly.

6: Font - Colour, face, size and B/I/U

7: Multi OS support - Linux, mac etc.

8: Different account types - @notonlygmail.com

9: Member profiles - This would encourage users to meet other users.

..anybody want anything else?

1. ya ok, that would be nice.

2. I can live without them..

3. Could really care less.

4. All ready has it

5. Will come later

6. Not needed. I have never felt the need to change the font size or color in a text chat?

7. Read the site, Mac and Linux version are coming.

8. No, it should remain exclusive to Google addresses

9. No one ever fills them out anyways

The one thing I really think they should add is the Gateways to other IM networks so I can get ride of MSN Messenger.

    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
