Paul's Wrong on Windows Vista Editions

Recommended Posts

Paul Thurrott has posted what he thinks are the editions that Windows Vista will be released in. I don't believe that he has what he thinks he has. Here's why:

    * Too few editions: Several sources tell me that there are over 20 possible editions up for consideration. Paul names too few for his list to be accurate.

    * Too much functionality: Microsoft makes too much on the Tablet edition and the MCE edition without continuing to offer them separately. There's no way they'd only bundle them in some "mega-edition".

    * Too early: Confirmed information from Microsoft official sources tell me that editions are not locked down yet. There is only one edition that is confirmed, but I can't talk about that until Tuesday morning.

I should also note that SKUs will NOT be announced at PDC.

I should note that details are still being worked out for PDC. PR may decide to announce editions at the last minute. As of the time of this posting, this information is correct.

20 possible editions?? id say the current tiers of windows xp is just about right. a version for the bog standard home user, one for the professional, then the relavent versions for specific devices...

however breaking vista up into more variations is going to confuse the allready confused computer user. if all else fails please just keep one version for the home user to stop mass panic about what version your average joe needs.

What does it matter to you?  Were you planning on buying multiple copies?  Or are you mad that it will a 20-in-1 pirate cd instead of 7-in-1?

Nice trollish comeback that has nothing to do with what he said. I think most people think 20 different editions would just make it more confusing for the buyers. Also more editions to patch.

I clicked on the topic and thought jokingly to myself that the topic would say there were to be more; thinking no way there would be as many as seven. Oh how wrong was I.

I guess flexibility is good and know microsoft would never release as many as 20 but I still think that all versions should be of the highest standard, not just the ones that the user has had to shelled out for.

why cant they just do a few, this is what i'd do.

Home Edition (for the every day user)

Professional Edition (the same as home but with added features that admin's for example would need)

Server Edition (speaks for itself)

then from there things like tablet and media center would just be home edition with extenders.

What is everyone talking about with this "more editions to patch" crap?  You don't see separate patches for Home and Pro now, do you?  Of course not.  It's the exact same underlying OS, so one patch takes care of both of them.  Vista will be no different.

What's this talk of "everyone" crap. So far just 2 users of about 14 that said this. You don't see everyone saying this, do you? Of course not.

You know you probably are right, you could just try to be a little less of an ass about correcting things. Do you correct people in real life like this? I sure hope not.

i was gonna say pretty much the same thing...

20????? wtf! i'd be happy with 3, but wtv.

I think you misunderstood.

I took that to mean they've got 20 possible SKUs, of which they'll pick a few. Not that they're going to ship 20 versions of Windows. That'd be insane.

It had everything to do with what he said. He made a statement like 20 editions will somehow make a difference instead of 3, to him.

What about that don't you get?

Yup, it will mean more work for MS, and will confuse the heck out of consumers for sure. I know many already who aren't even sure if they should buy Pro or Home for XP, and then they hear about MCE and thats just another thing to tell buyers. Sigh. But I agree 20 versions is a bit much

I am going to make them up.

Lol

Some people have misunterstood, the article is saying that there are 20 versions under consideration, on which of the 20 they'll pick a few.

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
