Microsoft reveals Vista UI Guidelines

well the eye candy is very nice and i admit its pretty but its still windows, its still basically the same as 95 in the way it works which means its counter productive. they can make the os holographic for all i care but until an enitre rewrite of the os is done, until they make it so that i get more work done than hastle, then i might. ill say again, its a very pretty looking os but its still basically unchanged in its operation since 95, 98, 2000, xp.

pshhhhh.

I want more than eye candy. I want a usable operating system with modern technologies. You will have to do a lot to get me away from mac os x microsoft!

so the redesigned kernel,

completely done from the ground up TCP/IP stacks,

WinFS (coming later),

GUI off loading to GPU,

new presentation system WinFX,

Avalon,

brand new network model,

.NET 2.0,

new XPS printer format (print to XML print storage like a PDF type thing but clearer and more control over it)

the nwe hardware model

the new UAP model for least priviladges user accounts

parental controls for games and videos that use the ERSB ratings

the new driver set

LDDM drivers

DirectX 10 specifications

the new NTFS imporvements (there are a TON of them)

the new security system

Internet explorer 7 with a way better CSS system

a new movie maker that will allow DVD authoring (Movie Maker 3)

a new media player (MP11)

A new installation system using windows PE

less rebooting needed for updates

supose to be a lot faster then XP by RC0

A new "deep freeze" feature for application freezing in memory

and the list goes on and on.. yeah its just eye candy  those are just the things off the top of my head, there is WAY more then that

I'm sorry, but there is a WAY to implement these features. It's all good having these features, but if the way you access them is faulty, then it's of no use. Windows is still windows and it's all similar.. they should completely redesign it. I use windows, but when I use OS X at college (I do very often), it makes me smile randomly. All the eye candy (and there is enough for a lifetime) adds up to make the whole experience worthwhile.

Seeing as there are 2 different types of people - language/arts and mathematicians/scientists. This is reflected in Windows / OS X. The Windows users have the functionality, but none of the style/class. Where as OS X still has the features (because enough nerds code for apple) but in the end, it is designed by artists.

    • Looks like the 7.1 is fake effects, can it at least do real 5.1? It says 'virtual 7.1' in all descriptions.
    • You can't, if you didn't notice, it doesn't support surround at all, it's right in the spec list.
    • Hi — I’m always interested in soundcards. Like displays, I just want to know I’m getting as much clean “sonic juice” into my brain as possible as the years take their toll. I’m not entirely sure what to take away from this review, though. It doesn’t really tell me whether the AE‑X is a good product or who it’s actually for. Most of what I’m getting is: there’s a driver to install, here’s what it looks like, and here’s what’s in the box. There’s a lot of emphasis on the SPDIF input. When you mention not needing to switch headphones between console and PC — does that mean the PC has to be powered on just to pass audio through? That seems like a fairly big waste of energy. Is this more something a streamer would use alongside a capture card? How are you testing the sound? (Also, you might want to clarify that you’re using the headphones in wired mode when you mention they’re wireless.) You mention the lack of EMI shielding — how much real‑world difference does that make compared with typical motherboard audio? On multi‑channel: what exactly isn’t supported? Does this mean Windows spatial audio (Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X, etc.) won’t work, or just that the card itself doesn’t decode surround formats? And are there any true multi‑driver “surround” headphones left that would even use that? You also highlight support for high‑impedance headphones — but what does that translate to in practice? How does it compare to driving the same headphones from a normal device, and does it make any difference for everyday, lower‑impedance models? In short, who is this card actually targeted at?
    • Yes, THIS is wordart, not the styling that can now be done. Wordart was all about those curvy words, that you could change the path of, like making words go around a circle. I don't think it can be done now, right?
    • Just saw a news report of a Waymo driving into a flooded road.
