How do I persuade my parents...

Recommended Posts

Man, in your place, with that computer, i wont care where it would be...

I got a computer and i can put it everywhere i want in my house, right now it's in the basement, but normally it's in my room, they jus dont care.. but compared to what u wanna buy...

Look my specs:

AMD Athlon Thunderbird 900MHz

128MB Ram

Quantum Fireball 13 GIGs

nVidia GeForce 2 400MX 64 MB TV Out

No CD Burner and no DVDRom

Thats pretty old stuff... I cannot pay a new computer or only upgrades to my computer, while i worked, last week, I made some cash but that cash is for something more important that the computer. If I ask my parents to buy me upgrades or a new computer they tell me: "Oh? Now you want a new computer? Your computer is only 1 year old..." So they dont wanna buy me shi*... So like you told, if your dad is never there to have "familly interaction" why would u care? I know it sucks that everyone there haves a computer in their room and u dont, but you have the most powerful computer in there right?

oh yea. this might be sorta important to add. I go to a Catholic high school, of which my parents pay for. So, I guess in a way they don't wanna lose money by me not doing well in school with a computer in my room. If I wouldn't make the honor roll, it would be because I am spending too much time on the computer, therefore by taking it away I would spend more time getting A's in school than being on the computer

Sounds a lot like my time in high school. I went to a Catholic school, and spent a lot of time on the computer (did the school's web page and taught myself html, as a matter of fact). But I also got terrible grades straight through sophmore and junior year. And my parents blamed part of it on me spending too much time on the computer. And yes, having it in a different room meant I would have spent less time using it. On the other hand, I never watched tv in high school, and rarely played video games...so I think learning HTML was a better use of my time than watching the boob tube. By the end of junior year though, my parents stopped caring. I mean, at that point, school's almost over, if they're paying for a good education, they aren't going to stop then. They'll just let things slide (at least, with most people I know).

Also, remember that if you plan on going to college, you'll probably get a new computer then...and that's only...2 or 3 years away, right? I personally spent high school on a 133 mhz 16mb Toshiba laptop, then got a new comp for college. So unless your system is seriously outdated, don't even worry about it.

And if you need even more proof...you can use my story. I went through high school, pulled a few Ds (never failed though), finished with a B- average, and got into every school I applied to (liberal arts, of course, but still some of the best schools in New England outside of Harvard and Yale). And now I'm going to add a Computer Science minor to my English major...probably only because of the experience I got in high school using computers so much.

Hope this helps. If not...it did waste a large amount of my time :p

For a few weeks now, my dad has known that I want new computer and that I want it in my room. I told him that I would pay for the computer and he said he's fine with it. Now for my mom it wasn't so easy. I had to make an agreement that I would stay on the honor roll at my high school in order to keep the computer in my room. Now, my dad decides to change his mind and "dosen't know" if he wants it in my room or not. :dead: :dead: :dead: He dosen't want me in my bedroom all the time, like my mom in hers with her computer and my sister in her room with her laptop. He says that I have "family interaction" because i'm in the dining room on the computer and he can talk to me from the living room. He wants the family to have interaction with each other, and half the time he's not home because he's at work.

Do any of you have suggestions on how to persuade them to let me get a computer in my bedroom?

Why not just explain to him by showing him this thread? It's called privacy, and everyone wants/needs it. If you're paying for it, your dad can get off his ass and walk to your room to talk to you. Not fair to make you sit in the dining room because he's too lazy to get up from the tv.

Oh, and in case you do show this to your dad;

From one parent to another (I have two kids), let him have the system, and don't forget what it was like to be his age.

I'm sure his dad had his own slide-rule in his room. :p

The privacy is a good point though. Add that to the fact that whenever I wanted to talk to my parents, I went and talked to them. Other than when that happens, most kids don't want to talk to their parents.

Or maybe I was just filled with teenage-angst...;)

i explained everything to him, and now, because he needs a loan, he might let me get it. The loan thing is because I would use his credit card to pay for the stuff then i'd reimburse him. So, it's like i'm giving him a thousand bucks loan for 0% interest.

I read the specs to him (He actually understands them because he sells computers himself at Sears) and he liked what he heard. Now all I have to do is make sure that he DOES let me get it and he'll get his loan too :p

[edit]i used all the tips that you guys gave me. Thanks everyone! I'll keep ya updated once I get his credit card in my hands :)[/edit]

Good to know that they're easing up a bit about the computer. Just remember that you live in their house, under their roof, eat the food they buy, and thus need to abide by their rules, even if you did buy the computer with your money. Since you go to Catholic school, I'm sure you understand the importance of "Honor your father and mother." :)

yup. the part about living under their roof... i was just gonna buy the comp and put it in MY room, but it actually is my DAD's room;)

Why does it have to be in your room? Porn? Privacy?

Work with your dad...at first you may have to give in and keep your system out in the open. But give it a few months and you'll find a reason to pull it into your room. And if anything happens to the system you can always have your dad take part of the financial responsibility (Well that wouldn't be broken if the computer wasn't exposed to everyone running around it...I TRIED to do it your way dad...)

A very simple solution would be a laptop.

I can't imagine anything suckier that having each person in a home sitting in their room alone with the computer. Do the people in your family ever talk to each other in person or is it by instant messaging?

:s :o :(

Just privacy in general. I don't like other people watching what i'm typing to other people. Some porn too :o

I don't really want a laptop... yet. I'll get one my college year of high school, but I don't want one now because they're not too upgradable

take a cisco class, and tell him that you will need a quite place with no interuptions.

also, it will help your networking skills.

and for familiy interaction, have a webcam

and dont forget to turn it off when your on kazaa. checking those vids :ninja:

I'll have to look into the cisco networking part. I've already mastered simple home networking, so i need a challenge

I already have a webcam, of which i do not have on too much because it takes up precious memory. With the new computer I might get, i'll have plenty of free RAM :D

I also do the same thing. Yeah if everyone in your family has a computer in different rooms have them all networked together. Then if you have broadband shared you can IM or video conference with each other. Only physical interaction is lost, but you are still social with one another.

what if you bought it..set it up..and not say a word about it..til they come in the room and see..omg..a computer..where did you buy that from? are you dealing drugs?..are you a heroine addtict?!?!!

ok, mabye the drug runner is pushing it, but what if u did finance it and set it up all by yourself?. or get a friend to bring it in while ur parents are gone to work or seomthing?

i had it in my room, but thats only because there was no where else to put it (lucky me :D). i got a huge desk slapped it on. and away i went.

i plead the 5th for those first 3 questions. I did finance it and will be setting it up by myself and a friend. As for bringing it in when my parents are working... my mom dosen't work. i wish she would so she wouldn't be at home all the time, because i just like to be alone with no parents at times.

j/k about pleading the 5th. i'm no druggie cuz eventually they kill u :dead:

and my parents are not stupid... they actually know what computers are, and allowed me to build one. In fact they told me its a good idea if i want to further progress my computer hardware and networking and have a job in IT one day. Let me ask you this? How many people do you know can create a flawless all-in-one macintosh, windows NT, Windows 2000, and UNIX network, and are 15... and i never read one book or took one class.
