Most of that seems like crap.

This because web designers have to spend their time making sure that it works with IE because IE doesn't work to standards. You have to use hacks to get stuff to work in IE that works in every other browser.

The reason for it is irrelevant, the fact is that IE supports more web pages than any other browser.

Actually, most of the points he said were right on the money. Someone mentioned that no one thinks that "Firefox is a solution to spyware". Well, you know all those people that are adopting Firefox and giving it market share? I know those people, and trust me when I say this: they think that Firefox makes them invulnerable (they tell me this as a run two or three spyware applications on their boxes and I clean out hundreds and hundreds instances of spyware and adware).

Also, I've used Firefox for a year and a half and I've used Opera for about two years of off and on. I can say that while Opera doesn't seem to have a better rendering system, it does seem to load stuff from cache at a much faster rate. It's like, whenever I use Firefox everything has to be downloaded again, while when I use Opera it's just there.

Here's the deal with the whole security thing: surf safe. Pr0n ads give you crap. Period. Don't click on "HEY FREE IP0DS CLICK HERE YOU HAXX0R AND GET FREE PLAYSTATION 3!". Done.

I mean, we can all agree that IE is less secure than Firefox and Opera. If you're using one, you're that much safer. Comparing Firefox and Opera on security is just silly. If you go on Secunia one day, one has less vulnerabilities and the next the other is winning again. Just use one, surf safe, and I can assure that you'll be just fine.

I know a lot of you were talking about extensions. I can say that yes, extensions are freaking awesome. I mean, it's just so cool to right-click on an ad and hit Adblock. I use Opera because of the faster rendering, but Adblock alone brought me back to Firefox for awhile. If there's really an extension out there (like Adblock for me) that just provides that much functionality, use Firefox for God's sake. If not, I'd reccommend Opera. If you like simplicity in your Options and so forth, use Firefox. If you really want to be able to control every tiny little thing in your browser (and you don't mind wading through crap to get Java working), use Opera. It all comes down to what your needs are.

So let's end the fanboy stuff and, in the words of Rodney King, "Why can't we all just get along?" :)

Oh noes! The fact is that IE has 85% market share. Then again, if the anti-trust thingy eventuallly goes against microsoft, there might well be a major shift.

I honestly feel like writing a total rebuttal to that article, but really, why bother? Oh yes, I'll be sure to add lots of 'Firefox (STILL 100% free)'.

i about laughed out loud when it said IE and mozilla were faster than firefox. that's just complete garbage. mozilla has always had a delayed response to everything i do, nuff said. as for IE, i ran a test on 5 computers; firefox was faster at about 3.3 seconds. really, someone needs to invent a way to stab people over the internet because this guy obviously has it coming to him.

W3C Standards Most Standards Compliant

Myth - "Firefox is the Most Standards Compliant Web Browser"

Reality - Opera (now 100% free) is the most standards compliant Web Browser. - Source

I thought that safari and konqueror were the only fully compliant browsers... something about the acid2 test?

I dunno, but that page reads like mindless propaganda leaning towards opera. Which is a good browser-but so are all the major browsers really... its just preference and up to the individual.

Man, that's a pretty bad "dispelling" of myths...

Myth - "Firefox is the Fastest Web Browser"

Reality - Opera (now 100% free) is the fastest Web Browser.

Wrong. Opera has failed in some tests, won in others. It depends on the web site visited, and possibly system setup and resources, and circumstances with general network health at the time of testing. More resources can improve things a lot for a more resource demanding browser, even surpassing another. In short: no way Opera is better in all cases. Disclaimer: I use Opera.

Myth - "Firefox is Faster than Mozilla"

Reality - Ironically Mozilla is faster than Firefox 1.x overall.

Again, this depends on sites visited. Sure, it may be faster in some cases, but Firefox (especially 1.5) has had several improvements not checked into the Mozilla Suite.

Myth - "Firefox is Secure"

Reality - Firefox is anything but Secure (...)

Firefox is more secure than IE though, according to most tests, which this test decides to not show. Security in that case defined by the number of open vulnerabilities. That's usually what people speak of when saying "secure". But sure, it's not 100% secure, however, which browser is?

Myth - "Firefox is the Most Secure Web Browser"

Reality - Opera (now 100% free) is actually the most Secure Web Browser.

Because of browser usage ratios and security testing or not?

Notes - Internet Explorer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed provide the exact same level of Spyware security as Firefox.

This is completely false, as IE still allowed ActiveX to be installed. Uninformed users may still opt to install dangerous ActiveX controls. Firefox doesn't even give the option. Hence, there's nothing "exact" about these security levels in particular whatsoever.

Myth - "Firefox is Bug Free"

Myth - "Firefox Blocks all Popups"

Myth - "Firefox was the first Web Browser to offer Tabbed Browsing"

Myth - "Firefox works with every Web Page"

I've never heard these myth anywhere, Neowin or elsewhere. Is he inventing myths to debunk?

Myth - "Firefox is the Most Standards Compliant Web Browser"

Reality - Opera (now 100% free) is the most standards compliant Web Browser.

However, Opera lacks standards Firefox has, and vice versa. In the end, what matters is which browser supports the standards you want it to support. Then pick browser after that.

Careful, his blog/"guide"/ad revenue source is protected by the DMCA. Might not want to directly quote it.

Yeah, and DMCA protects oh so much against quoting... ;)

Only copyright can do when material is copied, but not really in quoting as that should rather be protected by fair use rights. (unless e.g. more like a majority of the material is quoted)

I thought that safari and konqueror were the only fully compliant browsers... something about the acid2 test?

Yeah, but the author of that article is clearly not aware of other browsers than IE, Opera, and Moz/Firefox ;)

In what test did Firefox v1.5 beat Opera 8 or 9?

This is about SPEED! not improvements.

Right... When people say secure they really mean the browser has had 26 vulnerabilities, 6 of which were highly rated and still has 3 unpatched? Sure they do.

 You are kidding right?

No it is there option to. This is no different then installing spyware from a browser link in Firefox.

Since you don't represent the whole Internet we will leave it at that.

I hate how FF still can't properly resize embedded .wmv files.

yea i couldn't agree more on that issue.

also sometimes playing a simple .wmv file bumps up the cpu % usage to 70%.

other than that, i couldn't say more about FF being the best browser out there.

have u guys ever click on a link from software and if you are using IE. In some case, one window will be directed to that page. And if you already typed something within. You might lose all those data. FF always had this issue until now or v1.5. so that's definitely a positive.

agreed

but where can i get this adblock thing you speak of for firefox?

ROFL.. im afraid sooo... *tear* hahahaha

I have used Opera for years solely for its fantastic use of tabs. Firefox poorly implements tabs. Plus, Opera does a MUCH better job of blocking pop ups, any that do come through are opened in a background page.

Opera does not get as much credit as it deserves. I will admit that the web developer for Firefox is a great tool.

i have used both Firefox and Opera.. but they never have truely stuck with me like Internet Explorer .. and i used the other browsers for a couple of months at a time.

Opera is underrated, but i don't know.. IE just feels better to me, and with IE 7 comming it will be much better, But i guess to each his own right ? :)

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
