[Shell Patcher] Tango Icons for Windows

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had problems JUST with the 96*96 folder preview icon? It's the only icon not applying. :(
You'll need to turn off all the "hide scary files" options, and search-and-delete your thumbs.db files - they include the image itself along with the thumbnails of the files within.
not sure i did a restore from your patcher and rebooted and i go tthis error :p
 ?!

Anybody know what redistribution policy applies to little freeware tools written by people from @stake? If it's reasonably liberal, I might be able to include their wfpdisable tool, which might make things go a little bit more smoothly, and speed up the file-swapping process.

vertigosity, omg mate your site has been hacked!
The page that's up, I put up. My old index.php was moronically written (by yours truly) in such a way that it would load code from other servers, and it was busy sending spam. So that's down for a bit until I rewrite stuff to not be a big flaming target for abuse. I really stink at coding... although that's not really any news to some of you guys frequenting this thread. I love this pack! Worked right away on my system:)

Just one question though. Are there any more icons similar to theese available for windows? Links please :)

Not that I know of, really. AFAIK, I'm the only person I've found converting Tango/Tangerine stuff (hence why I'm doing it :) )... and there aren't that many things in the Tango style floating around the internet even as PNG/SVGs (the only Other Things I'm aware of are stuff Jimmac's done for various apps, and Sevenissimo's Tango-Unofficial stuff). Anything in particular you interested in? It might be done, but just not converted. If it's something common, or related to the shell toy, I might put it on my List Of Things To Doodle In Inkscape When I'm Bored.

To anyone who's interested: having brought up that list, I got bored and doodled up a Windows flag and a Bluetooth icon in Inkscape, what do y'all think? I think I'm going to use the Windows flag for the start button, if nowhere else, and include the Tango Feet and Ubuntu Circle of Hands as alternates for people who really want to fool themselves into thinking they're running Linux.

I love the start button. (Y)
Me too :)
Nice ;)

Any chance of this in a IconPackager file?

Not from me. RoomiestDruid started one for his own machine, I was planning on updating it using the shareware version and releasing it in his name, but both of us are having problems with it randomly reassigning icons (wtf?!). Ksaad's doesn't use the pixel-tweaked lower-res versions, which I sorta frown upon, and a few icons are in need of being updated. From the WinMatrix link, a "One More Guy" has done an IP pack that's listed there, but he doesn't use the proper 16x16 icons either. I'll suppress the need to rant about "why doesn't anyone do that?!" for the moment.
The icons I have marked have not changed:

I'm using German XP.

what might cause this error? any suggestions...

From my shiny new FAQ:

> Why are some of my icons replaced improperly or not at all?

There are several possible explanations:

* You are using some other piece of icon customization software, and have set said icon(s) to something else, elsewhere.

* The patcher was unable to swap the customized and live versions of a system file, either because a program locked the live version, or because Windows File Protection protected it. If either of these happen, they will happen silently and without errors, batch scripts are not very intelligent. If this seems to be a problem, try patching with Windows booted in Safe Mode.

* The patcher failed to completely clear the icon cache. A quick and easy way to do this is to toggle large icons on and off again, or vice versa. Note that this will rearrange your desktop icons.

* Some icons simply aren't set to be changed yet, because Tango doesn't include an appropriate icon, or because I haven't gotten to it yet. If you're pretty sure Tango includes an icon for a function, bring it to my attention and I'll try to get it replaced in the next point release.

thanx for pointing me to the thumbs. :)

is there a way to get rid of those for good btw?

Any chance of seeing an iColorfolder pack?

Maybe, I did one for Inexperience, so it's not a completely alien idea to me. Now that I think about it, it actually seems like a nifty idea (I always liked the Classic MacOS's folder-coloring ability) so I think I might just  .

Yep, in the Folder Options list-of-checkboxes, there's an option marked "Do not cache thumbnails." I think that's probably a good one to toss in the FAQ, as well, eh?

VS identification:

@3m00: The VS in the screenshot from Markoajda is OpusOS, by B0se

@punio4: The VS in the screenshot from Srn looks like an orange recolor of Gui.Air... also by B0se! The shadows could be generated by Y'z Shadow or WindowFX, among others.

@Sam: What model VW is that in your sig? It's probably not something we get here in the States, but wow, I like it!

I've got some pseudocode down on paper for a patcher in VB6 that includes file modification date checking, which gives me a few ideas. Scaling it back from being a generalized GUIReplacer-ish app to a standalone app with more things hard-coded is making it a lot simpler for me to conceptualize :)

What the..

I just ran the hack-o-matic.cmd and it said it was completed successfully, but when the computer rebooted, none of the icons were changed! What's happening? Advise pls.

sucessfully doesn't necessarily mean sucessfully, it just means it'll probably still boot :shifty:

PM sent.

thanx again :)

OK, thanx for the replies... This may be a little over the top, but could we be expecting shell animation, bitmap and similar replacements :p ?

Sorta like XPize or FlyakiteOSX...

Not over the top at all. There are already some animations, I'll get around to making more when I find a more programmatic way of making them; trying to get PSP's scripting functionality to work (which, it usually doesn't) just puts my head too far into a wall. Bitmaps are practically effortless to do, and I've got SVG source to get just the right size images for them... there already are a few, I've mulled doing some wizards and such but I'd have to find and catalog them. Lately, my spare-time obsession has been writing the shiny GUI-based patcher, but it'll happen someday. Edited by vertigosity

    • Here is how I fixed Windows 11 not booting after clean installation by Taras Buria Story time. A couple of weeks ago, I experienced a very odd thing with my computers. I was trying to reinstall Windows 11 on my primary device, and everything was going smoothly until the installer performed the first restart. After that, my computer entered the boot disk selection screen instead of continuing the setup process. Huh, that's odd, said I, and selected Windows Boot Manager only to see it fall back into the same screen right away. Then I tried booting from the USB drive with the same result—the PC kept returning to the boot device selection screen, and removing the drive would send my PC to UEFI, again, with no way to launch Windows 11. I fired up my spare laptop, which has been sitting unused for quite a while, to see if I am dealing with a defective USB drive. Nope, Windows 11 installed and started without issues. After trying another drive and checking all the possible settings in UEFI, I decided to try disabling Secure Boot. Lo and behold, Windows 11 started as it should have been in the first place, continued the setup process, and reached the initial setup screen. Victory! After I finished the setup and applied all updates, I re-enabled Secure Boot, and Windows 11 started without issues. Some time later, I tried reinstalling Windows 11 on my laptop only to experience similar issues, with UEFI claiming a Secure Boot violation. I checked whether the drive works on my main PC, and yes, it installed Windows 11 without errors. I scratched my head, went to UEFI, turned off Secure Boot, and installed Windows 11 without issues. After that, I enabled Secure Boot. Note: I used the official Media Creation Tool app for my USB drive. Also, UEFI was properly configured for Windows 11, including no Legacy Mode, a GPT-partitioned drive, and TPM and Secure Boot enabled. From my experience, if you are dealing with similar symptoms, I recommend two things: If you use old Windows 11 install media, create a new one with the latest Windows 11 release, especially if you know your PC already has the latest Secure Boot certificates. If you cannot create a new one, turn off Secure Boot, complete the installation, download all available updates, and then re-enable Secure Boot in UEFI. Note that you need to turn off Secure Boot after installing Windows 11. Otherwise, the installer won't run, claiming a hardware requirements mismatch. I believe the problem hides in Secure Boot certificates that expire this month. Microsoft is currently rolling out new certificates, and maybe a mismatch was causing these issues for both of my systems. I am out of my depth to make a definitive statement; this article is flagged as "Opinion," as I only share my experience and some tips on how to fix the problem. If some of you possess deeper knowledge and understanding of the situation, please share it in the comments. As for everyone else struggling with computers not booting after a clean install, the two steps above should get you out of the pickle.
    • I gave the tool a chance the other day to make a USB. An hour later it was stuck at 0% downloaded. I downloaded the official ISO, downloaded Rufus, and made the USB myself in 15 min.
    • <Moved to software discussion and support> I've got fond memories of Winamp. Changing the skins, the different visualisations etc. But now I just need a simple music player. MSN messenger would be another one, MSN Messenger Plus (I think?) offered so many different plugins. But again, it probably wouldn't work for me these days. And then there is miRC. i think it's still going these days, but lord i had fun with that back in the day. Now it's mostly stuff like Discord, WhatsApp group chats, Signal, Telegram... /me is showing his age...
    • ive always been fascinated by old software this is an old video player for windows from apple
