I've always been a PC user but recently I've ventured over to the Mac side and I'm loving it. Bought a 13" MBP last month for school (2.26GHz, 4gb RAM, 250GB HDD) and I can't get off the darn thing. I still have a PC desktop as I am a gamer so I will still be using Windows though.

Setup has changed a bit again, so here goes:

24" iMac

2.8Ghz Core2Extreme

4GB RAM

500GB HDD

ATI Mobility Radeon 2600

Snow Leopard/Windows 7

15" MacBook Pro

2.8Ghz Core2Duo

4GB RAM

500GB HDD

Geforce 9600m 512MB/9400m

Snow Leopard/Windows 7

iPhone 3G 8GB Black

Airport Extreme - Dual Band (latest gen)

"Mac" is also the platform name. So if you're using Mac OS X on whatever device you're on the Mac platform and thus a "Mac user". If you're using a Mac (the computer) with Windows you're on the PC platform.

Mac is the name of the hardware platform. Macs and PCs run OS X.

Running OS X does not make you a Mac user, it makes you an OS X user.

Agreed, what has always stood apple apart from others is that they produce the hardware and software, with which the software is directly tied into the hardware. The mac platform is both the hardware and software working togeather.

"Mac" is also the name of the entire software platform. Both software and hardware carrying the "Mac" label with the smiling Finder logo symbolizes that the product is compatible with Mac OS. Not such much that it works with the Macintosh computer itself because that obviously depends on what operating system it runs. Be it Mac OS, Windows, Linux etc. Companies nowadays only talk about "PC" and/or "Mac" compatibility, where "PC" is identical to a computer running Windows and "Mac" is identical to a computer running Mac OS X.

When you have a Mac only running Windows the "Mac" label no longer applies to your configuration and you'll have to look into the "PC" software category. Visa versa if you have a DELL running Mac OS X. It's that simple.

Things aren't as black and white anymore now Macs (the computers) run Windows natively and generic PCs are able to run Mac OS X natively.

Picked up one of the new Mac Mini's, 2.26ghz, 2GB (upgrading to 4GB at the weekend), really happy using it as my download device and hooked up to my 2.8TB Drobo and sharing to pretty much everything around the house. Also using it headless via VNC to my main PC setup to administrate, it runs nice and quiet that I can just leave it on all day and night if needs be.

Sold my aluminium iMac, I still have an old Power Mac AGP G4, 2GB RAM, cant remember HDD, that Ive no idea what to do with.

I'm curious as to who owns Macs on Neowin, I've seen a few recent purchases so I'm wondering.

This is what this thread is for, just post your specs of you mac, the model and the OS it runs.

Just one post, no extra posts and no repeat posts so it's easy to tell just by looking at the number of replies.

I'll start it off obviously. It's a sticky as well.

    • Not such a great deal, Ultimate, which gives you full 5080 features is $181.99 CAD per month, that's $2183.88 per year, I can buy the 5080 for $1809.99 CAD, then it goes up to $279.99 per month after the first billing cycle. Typical cloud rental, costs more than buying the hardware.
    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
