GameCube Lessons Learned?

Reggie says the Wii will have a stronger launch than Nintendo's previous effort.

by Daemon Hatfield

May 25, 2006 - In a recent interview with Nintendo Power, Nintendo of America's newly-named president Reggie Fils-Aime claims the company has learned from the GameCube's mistakes and won't be repeating them when it launches the Wii this fall.

Fils-Aime admitted that the launch titles for the GameCube were not strong enough, and additional software was too slow in coming. The GCN launched November 18, 2001 with 12 titles. Luigi's Mansion and Wave Race: Blue Storm were the only first party games to launch with the system.

This time out, Nintendo has apparently been more open with third party developers from much earlier on in an attempt to have more, higher quality titles available when the Wii launches.

"We have been sharing information and development tools with publishers since very early on in the process. We have communicated to them why it makes sense to develop for the platform, and why it makes business sense to bring their best current franchises and brand-new concepts to the platform," Fils-Aime said. "Those have been our key tools and tactics to make sure that publishers are on board with our strategy."

Nintendo had 27 playable Wii games on display this year at E3. So far, 16 titles are planned for the system's launch.

"From Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Ubisoft's Red Steel, the core gamers will be thrilled. With Tennis and WarioWare, we have titles that will reach the masses," he continued. "And, based on the sheer range of titles we've shown, we're confident that the entire first year of Wii's launch will be strong. So, I believe we are well on our way to addressing the key lessons coming out of the GameCube launch."

well we can always hope, i thought GCN, was going to be fine and people would buy it. It was the first of the last-gen console i bought, and i loved it for the exclusive Resident Evil games. But after i got through them and the first party games, their really wasn't any games left worth playing

    • True, but if they make such an update, there is no guarantee that the method to disable it will be the same, meaning that this tool might not work until it is updated.
    • Wolfenstein TV show in development at Amazon by Usama Jawad Wolfenstein is a very popular game franchise with its roots going back almost 45 years to Castle Wolfenstein in 1981. Modern titles in the series are based on an alternate history where the Nazis won World War II, and players are tasked with taking on the mantle of the badass protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz and taking the fight to Axis forces. Here at Neowin, we are huge fans of Wolfenstein and its slick gunplay. Banking on the popularity of the series, Amazon MGM Studios is currently working on a Wolfenstein TV show. Patrick Somerville will serve at the helm as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He has apparently been a fan of the games since he was a child, and he will be joined by some other executive producers too, namely Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham. All three of these have previously worked together on HBO's Westworld. Wolfenstein's current developer MachineGames has also offered up Jerk Gustafsson as executive producer. Not much about the plot is currently known, but the logline of the TV series does aptly say that "The story of killing Nazis is evergreen". It is unknown if the series will star B.J. Blazkowicz with a storyline inspired from the games or if it will serve up a fresh take with new characters. This isn't Amazon's first foray into the world of TV shows based on video games. The company has previously produced the popular Fallout TV series based on the game franchise of the same name, and has other similar projects in development too. These include TV shows for God of War, Mass Effect, and a Warhammer 40,000 project starring Henry Cavill. The release date of the Wolfenstein TV show is currently unknown but it should be a strong addition to Amazon's already impressive slate of content. Source: Variety
