I'm trying to pull the pieces together and I'm thinking I know the purpose of that "monster". Like Danielle said, it's a security system, but I think it's main purpose is purely evil. It's duty is to pick off the castaways one by one, though it seems to be choosy about who it takes.

In the 5th episode White Rabbit during season 1, Jack saw what he thought was his father and by following it he nearly fell off a cliff.

In the 8th episode Collision during season 2, Shannon followed what she thought was Walt and it led her into tragedy. Though I'm not sure if Walt was REALLY there at some times, but I'm thinking more that it was the monster.

Also in season 2, episode 18 Dave, Hurley followed the supposedly dead Dave and nearly followed him off what I think was the same cliff Jack nearly fell off.

And finally this last episode with Eko. He felt like was was following his brother, when the smoke was clearly surrounding him. And then the illusion of Yemi said "What makes you think I'm your brother?". I honestly believe it was the "monster" leading him into a trap.

So my theory basically is that this "smoke monster" plays mind games with people in an effort to determine whether or not it wants to kill them. What do you guys think?

That is an excellent observation and it would make perfect sense with what the executive producers have said. That we've seen the monster but may not have realized it. Very interesting...

Make sense and I think you're right.
