Lost - Season Three

Good episode. Shame Eko died, i thought he was a pretty good character. Just when you seem to think you got your head around what is going on, that black smoke shows up again and plays "whack-a-mole" with Eko. Well, it's got to be pretty apparent that the smoke is judging people on their past.

that new chick is hot!

and btw i dont think its smoke coz you can hear those

mechanical noises in the background when the smoke

was dragging eko around.

I really liked eko, its a shame he died

and i think it really is a game theyre playing on jack but i cant see what they intend to with him

Guys, why the long break between next ep. and that one after it? Allmost 4 months...

They're doing that so that it isn't on and off and on and off. This way, when it's on, it's on and when it's off, it's off. No guessing when the next episode is. I think it is a great way of doing it

Interesting and slightly frustrating episode, frustrating because it raises even more questions.

Why did the monster chose to kill Eko now? When before it looked at him right in the face and left.

Why did Locke say "did you see a white light"?

Sounds eerily similar to what people who have had Near Death Experiences, and we saw Locke's flashback and I can't remember any substantial white light. Was Locke aware somehow that Eko was going to die?

Oh and I don't trust Juliet at all.

Know what I find really funny about the last episode

When Juliet is showing Jack the TV he is inside a sort of holding Cell which has a glass wall, and everyone knows that Glass is semi-reflective especially in low-light conditions, the camera being positioned where it was would enable Ben to view everything that was being displayed on the TV set (albeit backwards) as from what I saw the TV was 2 or 3 feet away from the Glass which left a big enough gap for the camera to see the reflection. She must be really stupid or working with Ben or this is just a slip-up on the directors side...

It's not necessarily glass. We all assume it's glass because it's transparent.

It could also be treated with something that prevents reflection....

I can't figure out what she's up to. Part of me wants to believe her video with the cue cards, saying how dangerous Ben is, etc....but I can't rule out the posibility that she's just playing Jack again and that her and Ben are really on the same side. However then all the tension between them wouldn't make sense...or course the writers can say whatever they want, but logically it wouldn't add up.

We've been shown that there is tension between Juliet and Ben on purpose. If it wasn't important, they wouldn't spend so much time on it. Everything in the show is intentional--every shot is done in a specific way to contribute to the story. The irritating part is that we don't know to what possible branch of the story these intentions veer towards...

I suppose it's possible that the guy with the eye patch is Kelvin, the other guy Desmond supposedly killed. It is possible that Kelvin was saved (Hanso intervention?) and re-dispatched to another station. Or that he wasn't dead to begin with and no one intervened and he just found his way to another station. Or, the eye-patch guy is someone completely different that we haven't met yet.

I just need to find out WTF the smoke monster is. My theory is that it's some kind of experiment gone wildly out of control. I can't fathom that The Others control it...that just doesn't seem right. I don't think that anyone controls it, I think it's a sentient being all to itself. Whatever the case it has the ability to read people and perhaps see their past and read their minds. Remember how it confronted Eko that time and he stared it down? There were small images of things from Eko's past billowing in the smoke. What if the smoke monster was originally something else, a different kind of entity and it was granted the power to see through time the way Desmond can (sort of) through the explosion of another electromagnetic hatch? If the exposure to such intense electromagnetism can give people the ability to get hints about the future, could it not also do the same to another kind of intelligence?

And apparently the smoke monster can take the form of other people? Maybe that's what it does...reads your mind and selects a figure from your past that you will trust and follow, and then it........shakes you around against a tree? Something's not adding up.

I remember reading somewhere that the smoke monster was closely tied to something called Cerberus. If you recall the screencap that floated around the internet after the "Lockdown" episode, where Locke is pinned in the Swan hatch and the blacklight map comes down, there is something labeled Cerberus. Cerberus, if I'm remembering correctly, was the dog of Hades (Greek god of the underworld) and the guardian of the entrance to the underworld. I also seem to remember reading or hearing something about how the smoke is supposed to be or is tied to some kind of security system? Cerberus is a code name? Big black scary thing? Guardian of the island?

meh, I should be working right now.....

Oh wait, of course. That's what it was! Danielle (the french woman) tells Jack, Locke, Hurley and Kate that the smoke monster is a security system. This happens in Exodus, Part 1 (season one) where they're traveling to the Black Rock to get dynamite to blow open the hatch.

More on the smoke monster here: smoke monster

Ive got a feeling the whole tumor thing is fake, I just find it a huge co-incidence that jack comes down the the operating room, and the x-rays are just left out like that..surely she could have taken them down....(I know my 'theory' kind of fails when its about the woman dieing, but again...him crashing 2 days after he found out he had that tumor? Fate-smate! and who diagnosed it, unless there was contact with the outside world...i sure wouldn't recognize that as a tumor and i doubt a fertility doctor could....Can you fake an x-ray though? or would it have to be a patients from outside...

Maybe its all a kind of test type thing for something even bigger...

That monster thing sure is weird! To me, it had a striking resemblance to an elephants trunk lol...i slowed it down a it does look exactly like a blurry trunk...something about it is very distinct! Its defiantly pretty obvious now that if you see that monster, you in some deep trouble...

Ive also noticed that kind of horn noise when its around, is this diagetic (real noise in the film) or added for drama. Sounds kinda real to me! so whats making it??

Before it was made when the trees were being knocked down but now its more with the smoke so im guessing that it was in fact the 'smoke' causing the damage all along...Theres also the mechanical sound

The juliet thing? Something about her makes me trust her...but then maybe were supposed to so we get a shock...And what was it that bed said about juliet looking like his ex-wife? i didnt catch that bit..

I thought it was a great episode overall, im not keen on ecko's flashbacks...theres not the same kind of weirdness as the rest, kind of boring relative to the rest i guess. Absolutely cannot wait for next episode, wonder if eckos last prediction will come true (what made him say that?) "We're next!"...3 week break is gonna seem so long! but then theres xmas etc to fill it out so hopefully it wont seem too long...

Let me know if you've got any thoughts, would like some of them questions answered.

Hmmm was Eko wearing his cross when he stared it down last time? Because this time he wasn't wearing it.. and all this trouble started again once he lost his cross after the hatch explosion...?

Dan

I mentioned this i think. In episode 10 when the monster confronted him he wasn't wearing the cross after he found the cross and wore it we didn't see the monster. Now after the explosion and lost it we see the monster again.

Good episode overall. I kind of agree with some people about the Jack thing being a test and that maybe Juliet turns out to be evil. Either way, hopefully, we'll find out next week. As for the Eko thing, if we saw everything that happened to Eko, why did he say they're next? there was nothing to suggest anything like that.

Hmmm was Eko wearing his cross when he stared it down last time? Because this time he wasn't wearing it.. and all this trouble started again once he lost his cross after the hatch explosion...?

Dan

He was holding it, and I get the impression that the "monster" was going to forgive him... but he didn't repent, so the monster killed him.

Well... I would love for it to be true.. and in the previews, Ben really does have the surgery...but ben coming up to Jack and saying how he'd beaten him, just really doesn't seem right. This is Ben, the Master of evil schemes, and he has one plan and then its game over? :\

    • Major Xbox layoffs may claim South of Midnight developer Compulsion entirely by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft has been making major changes in its gaming wing Xbox for a few months now, including the appointment of a new CEO, a large number of leadership changes, and strategy shifts. However, the company is seemingly also looking at initiating a major layoffs wave at Xbox and perhaps even a studio closure. The new report lands from Kotaku, Xbox first-party developer Compulsion Games is being shuttered soon by Microsoft. For those unfamiliar with the studio, it's the team behind Contrast (2013), We Happy Few (2018), and South of Midnight (2025). Its latest game was quite well received, even winning a Peabody Award for its writing. It even received a 9/10 in Neowin's own review, highlighting its engaging storyline, gorgeous world, and curious characters. The studio joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018, just as Microsoft announced it is acquiring Playground Games, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. Despite recent listings for new staff roles, according to the new report, Compulsion Games is being closed entirely, with over 90 staff being let go. Kotaku also added that the studio's leadership is in negotiations with Microsoft about this decision, but no official details have been revealed yet. The report lands just as two senior managers of Xbox leave their posts at Microsoft Gaming. Head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan and chief of staff Louise O'Connor originally began their journey in Rare and have been a part of Xbox for over two decades. Dunkan has been responsible for games like Kinect Sports and Sea of Thieves, while O'Connor was primarily working on Rare's Everwild project before its cancelation. If this report about the studio shutdown is accurate, this may just be the start of a major new layoffs wave at Xbox Game Studios. There are also rumors of Arkane Studios being heavily affected. As always, take all these reports with a grain of salt until something official materializes from Microsoft or the studios.
    • The flaw with this analysis is that this laptop has a cellphone CPU in it. In the Intel world, that would be an N150 and those are everywhere, even in low end laptops. You can get an N150 based NUC with 16GB RAM and 256GB-512GB SSD... NOT soldered in... for < $500 Canadian (around US$360). The problem is two fold: tech bloggers/writers on most tech site (like this one, ironically) overvalue Apple and apparently aren't in the same earnings class as most regular people. As a result, we get breathless articles about how everyone needs a folding phone when most people just cannot afford one... or really need one. And we get Apple used as the baseline metric regardless of whether that comparison makes any sense. If Dell or HP released a retail laptop with a cellphone motherboard, you'd be all over them for doing that - but Apple does it and it's genius. I see articles suggesting what Samsung - a company that basically started the foldable phone market and has built them for eight years - needs to do to compete with Apple's unreleased, unspecced and unseen folding phone. Sorry, no - if the Neo (really creative name there BTW - still, better than the Go, the other "creative" product name everyone's using) encourages PC makers to make cellphone laptops using lower end ARM processors, we all lose. It's a step backwards and a capitulation to the fact that semiconductor makers and computer OEMs (and tech bloggers) have totally lost the plot.
