Its by far the worst thing in this build, I don't see how they plan to get it working by November. This build feels like a real OS, but the Media Center part is horrible.

How is it horrible?

I've been using it since Beta 1...trying to get it working with my Xbox 360. Since then some of the builds have worked, and some have not. This build it works perfectly right off the bat, it's a heck of a lot quicker and smoother than 5472 was. Granted, I do not use it with a TV tuner so perhaps it's not so great on that side. I'd hardly call it "horrible"...more like pretty good, but still could use some polishing up.

There is no new log off sound, however this is a new shutdown sound, and you can get it by downloading build 5536.

On the contrary; the sound plays when you log off. It's listed as 'Exit Windows' in the Sound dialog. The other new sound is 'Windows Account User Control.' ;)

hmmm that's wierd.... so the log off sound doesn't play when you log off manually :/ BTW the UAC sound is not new, it was there in 5472.

And thanks for correcting me. As you know, my last build was 5384, so the UAC sound new to me. ;)

Maybe some of you could tell us how Windows Explorer looks and behaves now..

1: If you resize the Explorer window and close it does it remember the size when you reopen it?

2: Is it possible to remove the "favourite links"-field (or whatever the name is.. on top of the folder pane)?

3: Is the folder pane still ridiculously small when you open Explorer? In Beta 2 i have to resize *every time* I open Explorer.. this better be gone by now.

I meant to reply to you much earlier but I wanted to install this build to make sure it still works. Just open up My Computer and size everything the way you want it. Then hold the shift button down and close the window. It will remember window size and folder view size. I don't know if you can get rid of the links though. I prefer the links over folder pane anyway.

Edit.

I can't get the drivers for my Audigy2 to install on this build either. I just removed it and reenabled my onboard sound for now. This build seems stable enough to run full time.

Did anyone get this to work with VMWare? I mounted it under Daemon Tools, Vista appeared to boot up, then it doesn't budge after "Windows is loading files... " (black screen, white progress bar).

I have the exact same problem installing Vista pre-RC1 in vmware on my system. The last build worked perfectly fine, but this one seems to always stop at this point. Hopefully someone will come out with a fix soon. However, it did install perfectly fine on my extra Hard Drive.

I have a question about User Account Protection dialogs. In beta 2 they were pretty annoying, because my screen flickered during the transition to the "darker" windows with only the dialog fully visible and accessible.

Does this flicker also occur in this build? Or is this transition a bit more gentle?

If 5536 is old news, why did Neowin JUST announce it as being available to the first 100,000 people?

Anyway, I am one of those people... 12% down so far. Can't wait to fire this bird up.

EDIT: Sorry people :D Misread the post. It was previously available to tech testers, and is now (quietly) available to the public. First 100,000 downloads. Of which I am STILL one of the lucky ones :D 12.7%. Go baby go.

In my computer it flickers for a split of second, but it's definitely MUCH smoother. But it still needs to be polished.

I have to partly agree with the Media Center not being too good in Vista at the moment. I dunno why but I feel like this is gonna get hugely updated soon.

Media center works better than it it did in beta 2, but it's still ugly. And I get this annoying audio loop bug when watching TV. Where can I send bug reports?

Yes, but knowing that and feeling that means microsoft is "not" going to do just that LOL.

Ugh dammit, i am going to email AOL about this now or file a bug report with Microsoft. I finally got this version installed...and EVERY build aim doesnt work it just sits there and locks up. Has anyone else taken notice to it? Is it AOL's fault? or Microsoft's?

If a 3rd party application doesn't work... it's the software developers fault. Have you tried a 3rd party app that can do the same job instead?

does anyone know where I can get this as a wall paper?

The previews are cool

But wouldnt it be more useful if you could see the last message the person left you for each box if you left ur mouse on it for a half second or so?

Ditto on the first one,

I've been after it for some time now.

Maybe someone could photoshop the words out?
