Apple Event on September 12th

Recommended Posts

Electronista claims that Apple may be holding a special press event on September 12th, 2006 based on an "official" email sent to Your Mac Life.

The date corresponds to the start of Apple Expo Paris which runs from September 12th to 16th. It has already been announced, however, that there will be no Keynote event for the Apple Expo.

Meanwhile, Businessweek also places an announcement from Apple in the same time frame. According to their sources, Apple plans to start offering Movie downloads through iTunes in mid-September at $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older movies.

Finally, many users are expecting Apple to release Core 2 Duo based laptops in September, but no further hints of this have been revealed.

Update: Mac4Ever is also reporting that Apple will be hosting a September 12th Event which will take place in San Francisco and be streamed to London.

Update 2: MacBidouille confirms that there will be a Keynote in San Francisco on September 12th that will be relayed to London.

It was originally reported that Steve jobs will not deliver a Keynote at Apple Expo. He will indeed not be in Paris; but a Keynote will be organized in Cupertino and relayed in London at Apple Europe HeadQuarter, where journalists have already been invited. There will are not relay organized at AppleExpo so far.

Apple, can I please have a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro already! I have my fingers on the order buttons for the second it comes available

eSATA and a better graphics card (>= X1700) would be nice too, but just the Core 2 Duo would be good enough for me.

Ditto.

Still waiting too!

Coming soon to a Mac or PC near you: Movies on iTunes. My BusinessWeek colleague Ron Grover has exclusive details about how how Wal-Mart, as the largest seller of DVDs -- it sells about 40% of DVDs produced -- is unhappy at the prospect of Hollywood studios doing business with Apple and iTunes. But here's the best part, and a detail you won't see anywhere else: The announcement is expected by mid-September, with prices of $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older movies.

I would have to guess is that there would have to be a new hardware product to go with such an announcement too, wouldn't you? Grover says says a "wider screen" iPod is on the way as well.

So unhappy is Wal-Mart at the prospect of all this that its demanding lower wholesale prices on DVDs, and Wal-Mart exec David Porter has been "playing the heavy" with Hollywood execs. Additionally, he wants marketing help when Wal-Mart launches its own movie download site later on. Wal-Mart's leverage certainly makes these Hollywood execs nervous.

Naturally this has studio execs spooked, and is irritating Steve Jobs, Grover reports. Jobs has apparently done some lobbying of his own around Hollywood, and is said to have personally called Wal-Mart honcho H. Lee Scott to express concerns. Wal-Mart also happens to sell an awful lot of iPods and Macs.

yeah, im thinking it will be the mbp that gets the core2duo treatment. and we need the video ipod unless there is going to be another keynote between the 12th and christmas. i doubt apple would delay the new ipod past christmas especially as they will be selling movies on itunes. it all makes sense.

23" iMac on September 12th?

Reports that Apple will be hosting a special media event on September 12th began emerging yesterday. According to multiple reports, Apple will be hosting the event in San Francisco which will be also streamed live to London.

MacOSXRumors now claims that Apple will be revamping the iMac line with the new Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor at this event, with the additional introduction of a 23" iMac.

Larger iMac form-factor rumors were amongst the reject rumors for pre-WWDC rumors. MacOSXRumors, however, cites "reliable sources" for this report and did have some accurate predictions for Leopard (virtual desktops, tabbed iChat).

Don't say that AppleDave. Our iMac G5's are running Photoshop twice as fast as the Intels.

You're right Johnny, I have one hell of a computer don't get me wrong but I'm amazed at how fast they pump out upgrades.

If what they're saying about Merom is true, then I'm VERY disappointed. An AU$2000+ desktop computer should NOT have a mobile chip inside it. At the very least, if Apple insist on using Merom, they should reduce the iMac's price by a few hundred dollars and have the 2.33GHz Merom in the 20", either as an upgrade or standard.

I don't see why Merom is needed just to keep the iMac quiet. My school's IMB PC's have 3GHz Pentium 4 HT's, and despite having the towers right in front of your face, I can't hear the fans at all. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Conroe run cooler than the Pentium 4's?

How thick are the towers compared to the iMac's?

That is not even a close comparison. Plus those towers do not have LCD's built into them, further reducing space to stick a chip in.

AFAIK Merom and Conroe offer pretty simular performance. If you don't like it, get a Mac Pro. An iMac is marketed as a Desktop, but everyone knows that it's a Notebook at heart (From the CPU to the Hard Disk and the Integrated Form Factor)

The towers are fairly small actually, but I see your point.

Similar performance? The Conroe has a larger L2, higher clock speeds and a faster FSB - how could their performance be similar? Not to mention, Conroe is cheaper. For $2000, I could get a very nice Dell (hardware wise - forget software for now) with a Conroe, so why would anyone buy a similar priced system with worse specs? Will that attract more customers? Will that cause PC users to say "wow, I think I'll switch now"? No, it won't. Merom is a very nice chip, but putting it in the iMac is a bad choice.

    • Gf needed a new Surface and was looking at a Surface Laptop because of the Snapdragon. Seeing as it was a two year old chip she just decided to get a Lenovo Yoga 2 in 1 instead. Personally this Surface Ultra Cassis reminds me a bit of Razor. It would be interesting if it could handle proper gaming and be 17 inch.
    • No idea, frankly, I'm not into minimum requirements gaming, but it would be an interesting test to find out. Also, I just have to point out that it wasn't my intention to downplay the performance of DXVK on Linux or Linux gaming in general (despite my own experience being a bit of a mixed bag). I just thought it would be good to point out that DXVK is not Linux exclusive and that you can benefit from using it even in Windows.
    • Fastfetch 2.64 released bringing new logos and other improvements by David Uzondu Fastfetch, the popular command-line system information tool that developers created as a fast alternative to the classic Neofetch utility, has updated its codebase to version 2.64, bringing experimental scripting power, streamlined compilation options, a smarter logo renderer, and Codec module support. As noted earlier, Fastfetch can now detect hardware-accelerated video codecs across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android through this new Codec module. On Linux and BSD, the utility uses VA-API by default, with a fallback to VDPAU on Nvidia hardware if compiled with libva and libvdpau. Windows users get D3D12VA on Windows 11 or D3D11VA with Media Foundation Transforms on older systems, while macOS relies on VideoToolbox and Android utilizes AMediaCodec. You can manually toggle Vulkan Video via the config file, and the program will report both encoders and decoders unless configured otherwise. Logo support for Quasar, Origami, Origami_small, NixOS2, and BerserkArch also landed in this release. BerserkArch, if you have never heard of it, is a specialized Arch Linux derivative that targets security researchers and power users. This distro comes with an offensive security tool manager, simply called berserk, which allows users to install complex hacking toolkits with single terminal commands. Moving on, Fastfetch now has experimental scripting options for custom formats using Lua or QuickJS. The Lua integration supports versions 5.3 through 5.5, sharing a single interpreter instance across all modules so you can store variables globally. T Alternatively, if you prefer JavaScript, you can use QuickJS-ng version 0.15.0 or newer to evaluate your custom formats with the qjs: prefix. Other changes that version 2.64 brings include native CMake compilation flags to disable specific modules to shrink the final binary size. Users can delete unwanted ASCII logo files directly from the source directory before building to save additional space. The format engine now boasts ANSI-escape awareness, meaning you can center text with the new vertical bar specifier without breaking colored outputs. Haiku users receive preliminary support for boot manager, window manager theme, screen brightness, and other basic properties. Finally, the Linux edition now extracts desktop wallpaper and theme details from the modern COSMIC desktop environment.
