and why would u rate ur programs :s, i think u just like those star icons.

Dont mean to cause any offense, but whats with all these MASSIVE UIs with thick chunky frames. It looks like an average Windowblinds theme.

No, an offence is the last thing I suppose here (excuse if it seemed like I felt offended (or seemed to offend))

I created it with the thought of making an pretty (hope so) and also useful concept.

The UIs here are REALLY AWSOME *takeabow*! They are very, very pretty. But some of the concepts use very much of the screensize and are very pominent. I think a good gui should look candy but also stay in background unless you need it (an then delight with cool graphics and useful features :) ).

I don't think mine is the prettiest and the best-to-use concept (there are other very good ones -> the logon screen of gakuseisean: OMG!).

And yes I must confess: I also love the playful concepts and I want to see more of them (therefore I actually came here ;) )

Hi everybody!!

Here's my new mockup.

First shows desktop with taskbar, sidebar and QuickLaunch, and second shows Windows Info.

Start orb:

When you click it, you open a Start menu. Also, the Start orb separates taskbar from system tray.

Taskbar & System tray:

Same as in Vista.

Sidebar:

A new version of sidebar is smaller, and when you hover a gadget it zooms in, the effect is same like icons in ObjectBar.

QuickLaunch:

It's bigger than one you can find in Vista, and now it's docked to the top of the screen. When you hover an icon it zooms in, just like gadgets in sidebar. :D

And finaly, pictures:

Desktop

Windows Info

More pictures soon! I'm clicking the Photoshop icon right now.

PS: Warrapa, your mockup is great, you have good ideas.

I made new pictures. :D

Start menu

looking good. But you should make all the icons a bit smaller.

You mean something like this:

That looks great! I think I could actually be able to use it! :p However I think I won't get rid of my left-bottom-is-start-button habit...

Hello!

I thought about the comments I've got and so a started another approach and decided to remove those little cute handy stars. ;)

As I mentioned earlier I think a good UI uses less space unless it is needed. Therefore at first the Start button is displayed in the middle bottom border of the screen. The whole screen can be used to display the application you're using. The little Start button doesn't desturb your work with the app - f.e. scrolling is no problem.

As soon as you press the Start button you get the ability to switch to / search / start other apps / files. Cusomizeable menus are displayed (My Favorites, My Settings) and recent files are displayed as previews (if available) (would as work i.e. for Videos). I centered the Start button as this button is the "door" ( ;) ) to the system.

What's important (to my mind) is the preview of your windows. Sometimes I have a full taskbar, 6 Windows Explorer windows opened and all I see in the taskbar is 6 times "C:\me..." therfore I reserved much space for previews.

If an action is taken (app started,...) the menu closes again.

This mockup isn't actually complete but as I had another idea I just wanted to share it and see, what others think I could do better (i.e. more contrast,...) - please give me some input.

@ADvert: first: thanks! second: I like your separation of tray icons and the task items with the Start button. Keeps it clearly separated!

Everyone's ideas are great, but I would never use any of these UIs without two things being changed. As other people have said, they need to be shrunk down in size; at least at my resolution, the taskbars are huge, along with the donut things. The UI isn't supposed to take up more of the screen, then it becomes cluttered. The other thing is that a lot of the graphics in this thread is based on Vista: the start button, icons, windows, taskbar, sidebar (don't know the name), etc. It would be nice to have original graphics (not all of the them, but at least enough to distinguish these designs.

I would have to agree with you on this one. We need original designs, not Vista like designs.

Hmm. I don't know why but I think all of these look terrible so far. :(

Apart from the 1 login screen. They all still kook like 5 minute aero mockups.

By the time rome ships everybody will probably will be bored of glass everything.

I feel bad writing such a negative comment

I made a Games window concept. It has some new options, but in fact it's same as in Vista.

Windows Seven Ultimate Plus = Windows Vista Ultimate Extras, but for Seven ;)

Apart from the 1 login screen.

Just curious:

Which login screen? :p

My login or Gakuseisean login?

Gakuseisean's login screen. It's subtle. Yours is a bit ott for a login screen. If it was a MCE video preview screen then I think it would work there.

Yes I know it took me over 24hrs to reply.

I dunno i think whilst it is quite big and blocky it would look good in a higher resolution.

There's some pretty nice designs floating about on here, and some pretty good photoshop work, but the fact is that there aren't really many new concepts.. Everything is still pretty much folders and windows with a new skin...

I think we need to think outside the box a bit and understand how we will be using computers in 3-5 years when the new windows comes out.. Will be even still be using a mouse? Fingerprint recognision will be common place, people will have bigger screens..

There are some pretty talented people on here, so it will be interesting to see if anyone can come up with a whole new way to interface with the computer..

Most of these look pretty good, except for the ones that look like they took a picture of the OSX desktop changed the icons and added some transparency. If you are going to make a windows design make a damn taskbar, instead of the stupid OSX dock ripoff.

Impressive mockups.

What if ... MS come up with something totally different from the mockups you guys made? I'm just saying "what if."

Remember Longhorn and how the transition to Vista came unexpectedly?

If MS come up with anything different I won't mind. Only MS would know what's best for their UI (since they're the only ones with usage statistics and common complaints).
