AOL Releases AIM 6.0 Beta

Recommended Posts

I'm loving this new version of Trito...I mean, AOL AIM. What does the name mean now? AOL=America Online. So AIM=America's Instant Messenger? Suppose it's better than America Online, America Online Instant Messenger, cause that's just redundant. Maybe it should be touted as that from now on. AIM=America's Instant Messenger.

It stands for AOL Instant Messenger.

It stands for AOL Instant Messenger.

I know that, but that's really redundant if they are going to insist on putting the AOL in front of it. So the chat program is called AOL AIM, America Online's America Online Instant Messenger? That's a little wordy. I like my idea better. AOL AIM, America's Instant Messenger. So you can have ad campaigns that say AOL AIM, America's Instant Messenger. *cue cheesy music* That makes perfect sense to me. That would give them a little something to thumb their noses up at Yahoo and MSN. Yahoo is just YIM, Yahoo's Instant Messenger. MSN is now WLM, Windows Live Messenger. But AIM is America's Instant Messenger. Like the choice of America. See how that works? Seems like a good marketting idea to me, but what do I know?

AIM Pro is decent, but until it's updated I don't think AIM Pro has the cool, new feature that this AOL AIM has, the ability to view instant images (aka, direct connect) in a seperate window and as a slideshow. Maybe they do have it. I could be wrong. There's also something new with the file transfers that someone mentioned. Those reasons alone make using this version worthwhile in my humble opinion. Now if they can just hurry up and release a new build with the fixed UI changes I think we'll all be happy...most of us.

Suppose it's better than America Online, America Online Instant Messenger, cause that's just redundant. Maybe it should be touted as that from now on. AIM=America's Instant Messenger. As everyone else said, the ability to view pictures in a seperate window and as a slideshow is a great, much needed feature. I tried it out with a friend and it works nicely. Great addition! It also seems to be running pretty smoothly. My only complaint is what everyone else is saying, the ugly UI! Particularly on the minimize, maximize, and close buttons on the main program window and on chat windows. I like the way those buttons look when you view someone's info, a light blue color. Perhaps it should be like that on all the windows. That one little change would make the UI so much better and fit the rest of the program. I'm going to add another minor complaint, my screenname is in lower case letters when people message me. I'd like the first letter to be capitalized. That's a real small, nitpick, though. Keep up the good work!

I'm pretty sure that America Online officially changed their name to AOL.. so that takes out all the redundancy. But then again I could be wrong. Perhaps someone can confirm the name change.

I think I managed to track down the causes of my crashing while away. It seems to be coming from Gadgets (I had av props and mytunes enabled). As soon as I disabled the plugins, AIM has been running along smoothly.

I was wrong. Still crashing.

AOL doesn't stand for America Online anymore. The company name is simply AOL.

LOL @ UI. Was gonna post this yesterday when it was released. I couldn't wait. But forgot Neowin was down.

I hope "6.0" gets better than this (UI). JEEESH!

I wonder why it's 6.0 NOW? I thought "Triton" was a "new begining". Hmmm. Wierd, but ok.

There's going to be a lot of feedback on this. :)

its because triton sucked so bad that nobody wanted to download, so they like what to hell lets rename it to 6.0 and make everyone to update from 5.9

smart strategy :pinch:

I'm still running AIM 5.5.3572 and I've been hesitant to upgrade because of the direction AIM seems to be going in. From what I've gathered, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, AIM is striving to be more of a multipurpose application; a program to facilitate all sorts of communication and not just the AIM that many of us discovered back in the '90s.

I like the little program, that all it does is send IMs and the occasional voice conversation. I've also got numerous "improvements" for my version that would be very hard to replace if I were to upgrade. If it ain't broke, don't fix it..ya know?

Are there any features that set the latest versions of AIM apart from the older ones that are must-haves?

Holy moses this thing keeps crashing on me. I don't know what else to do. I've tried everything from doing a complete nuke of my old install to disabling things like windowsblinds and yet it still continues to bring up the feedback agent and crash out.

i got rid of the ads finally from a patch i found on the internet, also this dont seem to crash for me.. yet.. and i love the tabs and effect just gold.. the only thing i dislike is the sound schemes and the fact that you cant send offline messages.

    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
