AOL Releases AIM 6.0 Beta

Recommended Posts

I agree. I think it's stupid to download a small file, which in turns downloads the program. It should be in one big file. Most of us are on cable/dsl connections now. At least provide the offline installer for those of us that would rather have it as just one file.

Could someone *PLEASE* provide AOL in one big damn file, stop this 'download manager' garbage, and just include it in one big file for download, like how MSN is provided.

Oh, and stop loading up my browser when I log in; log in and leave me alone.

Luckily there is one for AIM.

http://beta.aol.com/public/triton/AIM_6.0....ull_install.zip

Then why not provide a link on their site directly to it? geeze, and they wonder why every tom, dick and harry outside the US either uses Yahoo or MSN.

And where abouts is that? nothing on the beta.aol.com faq mentions it.

The link still doesn't address the first issue, the stupid idea of using a download manager.

Oh my.

Please follow:

AOL Beta Central --> AOL 6.0 Beta --> FAQs --> Q: Having problems downloading the current software?

A:Click Full Installer link to download the software.

Thanks for providing the offline installer. AOL needs to make it more clear because not everyone reads the FAQ.

Which brings me to the second quesiton, when are they going to disable that *stupid* idea of automatically launching the browser when one log's in?

Hi mancode,

You're welcome. But everybody should read the FAQs for any software esp. if you're beta testing it. That's like a must. Just my opinion. I however, ALWAYS read the FAQs for everything.

Greg,

Did AOL disable the feature that allows you to be connected in two different locations without getting kicked out? I just connected to AIM with my phone and I got kicked off AIM 6.0 saying another session was started.

Hi L3thal,

The only things I see in the known issues (which I'm sure you've already checked them) are issues with certain routers and AIM Phoneline (if that's what you're talking about?). I'm sure Greg will have a more accurate answer for you. :)

No, its not the phoneline. With the previous versions of AIM, if you would sign in to your screen name lets say at work, you would get an IM saying you are connected at two different locations and it would not kick you out from your other location (such as at home if your accessing it from work). However, when I do that now, I get kicked off at home and when I get home it states that another session was started which I can assume means that feature was removed?

It was a very useful feature that allowed me to access AIM while I'm on the road and not having to worry about getting kicked off at home just in case I get an important IM.

Oh ok I gottcha. ;) I don't know anything about that, if it was removed or a bug.

    • Ladybird Browser is no longer accepting outside contributions thanks to AI by David Uzondu The Ladybird Browser Project has announced it will no longer accept public pull requests and will limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it works towards its first alpha release. According to Ladybird's creator Andreas Kling, this is "not a change we make lightly," but the rapid shift in AI capabilities forced their hand. Previously, a massive PR implied that the person behind it put a lot of care into the code and is ready to "answer for the consequences." Now with AI, anyone can generate a PR without even understanding the bug fix or feature they want merged. The blog post goes on to say that the team is closing all open public pull requests immediately, and that maintainers will not treat external forks as a review queue for upstream Ladybird. Instead, the team wants outside contributors to focus on reporting bugs and running tests. Kling started Ladybird back in 2019 as LibHTML, a simple HTML viewer for his hobby operating system, SerenityOS, but by September 2022, it had turned into a full-fledged browser project. What sets Ladybird apart from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox is its totally independent engine, which does not rely on pre-existing codebases. The project maintains a strict policy against default search engine deals or user data monetization, keeping development funded entirely by donations and sponsorships. Generative AI is forcing open source project maintainers to rethink how they handle public code contributions (and the whole open-source thing in general). One month ago, a leak about the National Health Service (NHS) suggested the organization was planning to take all of its public repositories private ahead of a May 11 deadline, thanks to Mythos (an AI model that Anthropic believes is too dangerous to be released to the public) and its ability to find and write exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Government Digital Service (GDS) issued a counter-report titled "AI, open code and vulnerability risk in the public sector" that stopped the shutdown by pointing out that hiding code does not improve security.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
