Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.0.195

Recommended Posts

So far, they've droped the Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. It's now just Yahoo! Messenger.

Under Help, you can now Check for Updates.

So far all that I've found.

Can download it from here, or the offline installer here. (Thanks King Of Chaos)

Few changes I've noticed:

  • The name went back to it's clasic name: Yahoo Messneger ( before it was Yahoo Messenger with voice, now the "with voice" was droped )
  • Under help you can automacly check for updates
  • Few new options under help such as tours and send in feedback etc
  • Ram usage went down a bit

thats all i could find any one else be willing to share?

Does this version crash LAUNCHcast if you listen to it for awhile? Try leaving it on for an hour or so, then see if it's still on. I don't mean the Yahoo! program crashing, I mean just the LAUNCHcast part. It says connecting...then crashes and says error code 21. So you have to keep re-starting LAUNCHcast. It's a pain. Version 7.5 doesn't do that, and that's why I've switched back to it. Probably takes less RAM, too. If it doesn't crash after an hour of listening, try leaving it on overnight and see if it's still on when you wake-up. 7.5 will be, 8.0 won't. Something got messed up with the switch to plugins. I have e-mailed Yahoo about this. Let me know! Thanks!

Y! 7.0.2 = 8-9MB. Versio 7 does everything that i need an IM! to do so why bother to go with the bloat of 8.1

Depends on what you consider bloat. Of all the programs loading on my computer (54) atm, in total they're using 784MB of RAM. I don't see a slow down of my computer what-so-ever. :)

Yeah, they are really lagging behind at this point. They need tabbed IM's. Any add-on for that?

Well lets see:

AIM- has tab im's

WLM -has tabs through Live plus! pack for WLM

Yahoo- no tabs, same core technlogy since first verson.....

i dont know of any addons but yahoo needs a make over, and tabed ims....

Now if only we had a Yahoo Messenger developer posting along with us and getting our feedback like AIM's dev, Sulax, does, we might actually get a better messenger. It's a sad thing when Yahoo is actually bigger bloatware than AIM while only adding the features that MSN and AIM added years ago.

Kudos to the AIM team for actually going to the hardcore users to improve their product.

Boo to Yahoo for making a less advanced client with more RAM usage.

I know that tabbed IMs is coming to the Yahoo! add-on called Y!TunnelPro.

Also, features Yahoo added that were AIM & MSN/WLM's? Actually, it's the other way around. Yahoo was the first IM service with offline IMs, not to mention the other stuff MSN/WLM cloned from Yahoo.

Heh. Good luck pulling off that one. Yahoo is notorious for their lack of interest in fixing bugs (and boot exploits that have been around for a couple years) not to mention a total lack of communication between the users and the developers. You really don't know what Yahoo is going to do. First they pull Y!Chat, then the Chat 2 protocol, hence, taking away any effective defense from script kiddies. The only way to have tabbed IMs, as of right now, will be with 3rd party software add-ons.

    • A coalition of publishers sued OpenAI and Microsoft over scraping content without consent by Hamid Ganji Image via Depositphotos.com AI companies often rely on readily available internet content to train their chatbots and provide users with instant answers. This method of AI training is fast and relatively inexpensive, but using a website’s content without permission or compensation is not something publishers like to see, and this is exactly why Microsoft and OpenAI are now being sued. As reported by Bloomberg, a group of publishers that collectively own nearly 400 newspapers has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The coalition argues that the two companies scraped their content to build AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot without paying any compensation. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argues that while AI products have generated billions of dollars in market value using publishers’ work, none of that value has been shared with the publishers. The plaintiffs are seeking statutory damages and injunctive relief for alleged copyright infringement and violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. “Defendants systematically and secretly crawled the Publishers’ websites—including content behind paywalls and other access restrictions—and copied the Publishers’ articles, stories, and other original works onto their own servers without authorization,” the complaint states. The publishers also described the AI boom as a “death knell for local journalism” if AI companies that scrape content for free are not held accountable. Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin and his law firm, Platkin LLP, are representing the publishers. “Our models empower innovation, are trained on publicly available data, and are grounded in fair use,” OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told Bloomberg. This is not the first lawsuit involving the unauthorized use of publishers’ content by AI firms, but it is one of the largest coalitions ever formed against the free use of content by AI chatbots. In 2024, OpenAI and Microsoft also faced a similar lawsuit from eight newspapers that claimed AI products were benefiting from their content without permission.
