First Halo 3 multiplayer screens from Swedish Mag

Giga, I wasn't indirectly calling you a fanboy. I was directly calling you one. I haven't even said anything remotely bad about Halo 3 and you're getting your panties in a knot in the assumption that I'm bad mouthing it. All I said was that it doesn't look like a big leap from Halo 2 graphics thus far, but I acknowledged that it's early and that there are still place holding graphics. Don't get in a tissy about it.

Halo PC: (Since we should really be comparing the PC version to this since the resolutions are more similar than comparing Halo 3 to Halo 1 on XBox)

Halo 2: (linked due to size)

Halo 3:

See entire thread.

Sorry, but again... I don't see as big of a graphical leap as you would expect from a next-generation console title; especially a next-gen console title that everyone's claiming will have some of the best graphics ever.

Sorry but, when did I get my panties in a bunch? From the looks of it, you seem to be taking the more dangerous route. I never said you were badmouthing it did I? I just posted those shots for comparison.

And my earlier reply to you about the cinematic shots was just to back you up. (to show that they probably removed the HUD) :|

And yes, I can see quite a difference between those PC shots and the Halo 3 shots. Take a look at the textures of the rocks and the ground. Take a look at the HDR lighting they're implementing. Master Chief himself looks more detailed in the leaked images. Just put the two images together on your monitor and there's quite a stark difference between them. This isn't just me right? :s

1600x1200 Halo 2 shots? :s

But I do agree with you, they're nothing jaw dropping. Yes, it's just alpha.

Edited by Giga

No, I'm not. I'm just reiterating that graphics of that quality will not occur in Halo 3. I stand by that statement proudly. If those graphics were so possible, why aren't they there right now since they already developed them? Because, as I already said -- the tech demo was missing A.I. and physics. Halo 3 won't look that good. That's a promise.

And you can't honestly tell me you wouldn't have responded the same way if the graphics looked great.

Do you know the definition of "hypocrite". I've come out at a Pro-MS fan for being a hypocrite fanboy and you also deserve it.

When you take the position that a game will not look great based on small-scale alpha pictures you're obviously extremely biased in another direction.

Will the game be "truly next-gen"? Who knows. I do have great faith in Bungie in achieving that, however obviously the pics of Halo 3 so far aren't great, and perhaps they should have waited in revealing screenshots.

However, again.. Making the assumptions that you are, makes you the fanboy. Whether you're pro-Sony, pro-Nintendo, pro-PC.. Whatever the case is. Don't be a HYPOCRITE :p.

Dear goodness, will you people please stop putting words in my mouth! If you want to say something dumb, do it yourself, don't pretend I said it.

I never once said Halo 3 would look bad. I said these screenshots leave much to be desired, but I acknowledged -- numerous times! -- that it was an early alpha build and I expected them to get better. I'm not saying it will look bad. I just said that, even with this as an early alpha, I'd expect them to release better screenshots to impress people. But I guess it's not hard to impress people who will already buy your product no matter what.

And please, learn the definition of a fanboy. If you think I'm a Nintendo or Sony fanboy, you obviously need to read my posts, buddy. I own a 360. I will not own a PS3. I will also likely not own a Wii. I'm allowed to be suspicious about how good something is if I want. How on earth is that being a hypocrite? Learn that definition while you're at it, too.

Again: I never said it was going to look bad. I stand by my point that it will not look like the trailer. That is a promise. It is not a fact that it will look like the trailer, it is a horrible misinformed assumption based on what Bungie's said about the trailer.

did anyone really expect all of these to be draw dropping? I wasnt, my reason? Bungie would not do a huge premier in a magazine, they will do it live...these pics are just to calm down some of the "give us teh infoz" crowd...of course it will look amazing, these are decent pics but with every release they will look better each time.

This way everytime we see it, we will be a little more impressed each time; marketing my friends...only feeding the hype machine

So you're not refuting that it might look better!? :woot:

I'm playing. Let's just take it easy for now. No one can judge if Halo 3 is good/bad until it's out and reviewed. Until then, we can only assume based on hands-on reports, videos, previews, etc. This is the first one out and so far we haven't learned much through some random Swedish Mag.

November is when the fun starts.

OMG!!!

/drool mode on!

dese things are shooo sheweet!

/drool mode off

Can't wait.. hmm.. i wonder if i should get a 360 today since i miss playing on Xbox Live. Off to Craigslist.com i go :)

Well I apologize for calling you a fanboy. From the posts I read of yours (in this thread) I got a different impression. But I have no problem being wrong ^_^.

I'm also disappointed in what's been shown in these scans.. However I also remember static pictures of Halo looking like garbage.. But when you actually play it, it's incredible. Lets hope they pull a Halo here ;).

Also I think HDR could add a lot to this game, so hopefully their implementation of it is exceptional. Obviously it's missing from the build these screenshots are from.

Your promises mean absolutely nothing. I don't understand why you keep saying that?? :dontgetit:

Yea, I'm pretty sure they had people preview the early builds, not because they really wanted to, but because Microsoft wanted them to, to create even more hype around the Xbox 360 before the holidays.

The leaked scans this morning caused a huge fuss, and we?re not going to discuss any of that stuff here today ? suffice it t say that subscribers will be getting their issues of EGM in the next few days, and they can read all about Halo 3 multiplayer (and more) in that magazine, and see some images that aren?t leaked on the interwebs already. I think you?ll find some very interesting and exclusive insights to come. The hi-res images will be available in all sorts of outlets eventually, including this here website, and we?ll go into more detail ? and answer some of your questions atAnd that won?t be the only Halo 3 info this year? there are one or two surprises still to come.ill to come.
Bungie's Weekly Whats Update

Haha, still more to look forward to and a couple surprises yet to come!! And Ayepecks can check out the full-res images when they're :pline finally. :p

Magik sheesh leave the guy alone... So he doesn't think they are that impressive, big deal.

I don't think they are impressive at this point yet considering theres other games out there like Alan Wake and Gears of War that look way better as a finished product.

With that being said, It is good to know that they are making progress with this Alpha build. Obviously by the time this Monster of a game is to be released the game will look awesome no doubt but halo has never been about realism anyways... just about looking great for the type of look the game is going for.

Dude seriously.. Like the other guy said. Lay off him.

Haha it ain't only Magik but yeah... I mean of course Halo 3 is going to be amazing graphics wise.

And you know what, at this point the graphics are good yeah... But hes right in saying that they aren't really impressive you guys gotta admit, not yet at least.

Some interesting find here:

I've made this topic to show people all the little details in the scans that might have been overlooked. I've cropped the scans to highlight points of interest, and I'll talk about each one a little too.

1. Possible Real-Time Visor Reflections

There are two screenshots in particular that suggest there might be real-time visor reflections in Halo 3's multiplayer. The first is this one:

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4469/real...lectionsmu3.jpg

As you can see, it is possible to discern the shapes of structures in the reflection of the visor. It could just, of course, be a reflection map that is used to give the impression that the real-environment is being reflected. But at least it's a step up from the visor's in Halo 2's multiplayer, which only showed smudges of dark and light areas. Another screenshot that shows what appears to be real-time reflections is this one:

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5633/real...ions2edihi2.jpg

In this one, the reflection is clearly different to the first image, and is also relatively brighter. This is consistent with the fact that this SPARTAN is in an outdoor environment.

2. Secondary weapons

This one is slightly more obvious. By look at the screenshots in the article, you can clearly see Bungie's newest gameplay addition: visible secondary weapons. Slightly subtler is the fact that depending on the weapon type, it's placement on the SPARTAN's body changes. For example, in the following screenshot, the SPARTAN has an Assault Rifle on it's back.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/8793/seco...pon2editah6.jpg

Meanwhile, smaller, dual-wieldable weapons appear to be placed on the side of the thigh, much like a pistol placed in a thigh-holster. This can be seen in the following two screenshots:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5010/se...aponeditgj9.jpg

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3110/seco...pon3editri7.jpg

At first this seemed like a really tacky and gimmicky idea, but then I realised the new aspect of gameplay this addition would bring. No longer will you be surprised by another player who suddenly whips out a shotgun, as you'll be able to see what weapons he is carrying and to act accordingly, thus making weapon choice and general gameplay more tactical. Also, you will no longer have to frantically ask, "WHO'S GOT ROCKETS/SNIPER/SWORD?" and be met with the reply, "I do.", as you then look around at your same coloured team mates trying to figure out who is who. You'll be able to see which of your team members has what weapon as backup, and thus make the whole process of teamwork more natural. Awesome.

3. SPARTAN Laser

When looking at the two crossed SPARTAN Lasers, I noticed they had text written on them. Upon closer inspection, the word on the gun said "Galileian".

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6691/sp...ileianedho6.jpg

Galileian is a reference to the famous Italian physicist, astronomer and philosopher, Galileo Galilei. According to Wikipedia, "Galileo Galilei was ... closely associated with the scientific revolution.". This is very relevant, because the SPARTAN Laser is the first Human weapon featured in a Halo game that doesn't use traditional projectiles as ammunition. It also seems to be the Human attempt at recreating the effects of the Sentinel Beams. Thus, it can be said that it is a "revolution". There might be a deeper meaning to the use of "Galileian", but for now it eludes me. Then again, it might just be a name. =P

Also, the following screenshot suggests that there is in fact a charge up period for the SPARTAN Laser, in order to balance it's high effectiveness against vehicles.

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6521/laserchargeuprt6.jpg

4. The "Man Cannon"

This is the Man Cannon:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3461/mancannoneditin8.jpg

I don't see why people are getting all upset over the implementation of a device like this in multiplayer. In case you've forgotten, in multiplayer, gameplay comes first. Realism and staying true to the story of Halo is second priority. The Man Cannon is a great addition to Halo 3's multiplayer. It enables a player to quickly get out of their base after spawning, and get right into the action. I don't know about other people, but when playing on big maps and spawning back at my base after dying and finding no vehicles left, the thought of having to trek across the landscape was uninviting. Now, with the Man Cannon, you don't have to rely on vehicles being at your base. In effect, it's like a permanent "vehicle" which will fling you out to where the action is, as can be seen in this screenshot.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1861/manc...tionedithj8.jpg

So as to show that it is in fact a player, I've highlighted the trail of the bullet the he just shot. Also, it should be noted that the addition of the Man Cannon means that, like Halo 2, Halo 3's multiplayer won't have fall damage. I personally welcome this fact, as I'd rather concentrate on killing people than trying to figure out if jumping of a ledge could inflict damage.

5. Warthog Damage

Now, in Halo 3, Warthog damage seems to be more than just cosmetic. Take these two different images for example:

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/939/war...ndamagedlp8.jpg

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/6232/wart...agededitku3.jpg

The first screenshot shows an intact Warthog. The second one, however, shows a damaged Warthog during an attack on the enemies base. It can be seen that, much like in Halo 2, as the Warthog takes damage, it shows it (as I've indicated with the number 2). But, improving upon this is the fact that the Warthog will actually break, as can been seen of the LAAG machine gun manned by a SPARTAN (as I've indicated with the number 1). The shielding present in the undamaged Warthog has, presumably, broken off due to damage inflicted upon the vehicle. This has resulted in the gunner to be much more open to enemy fire. This one example suggests that damage on vehicles will be more than just the superficial damage seen in Halo 2.

6. Awesome Lighting

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9724/lightingeditoz9.jpg

'Nuff said.

7. Crashed Pelican

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8987/pe...etteedituu4.jpg

Nothing special, just hard to miss. Small additions, such as this, to the multiplayer maps are welcome as they help to

8. UFO?

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6909/ufoeditzb4.jpg

This had me completely baffled for a while, and I'm still confused now. At first, I had no idea what it was, but now I'm thinking it's a rocket from the famous SPNKR Rocket Launcher. If so, it confirms that the Rocket Launcher will still feature in the game, although I speculate that it's lock-on feature will have been removed so as to allow more focus on the SPARTAN Laser as a vehicle destroying weapon

And that's all I've found. Go ahead and post anything else you may have seen! If it's something particularly good, I'll get a screeshot of it so people can understand what you're trying to point out. =D

Wow, that took forever to organise and type out.

Looks to me like a flying sniper rifle, possibly from an explosion.

I so badly want the ability to fly the Pelican!!! :woot:

    • Excuse me for having an opinion, fella'... (Why am I not surprised?...) Congrats on your very informative post however...
    • By the sounds of that wall of Fox News propaganda gibberish attacking the Democratic Party you've already had plenty of "juices" flowing this morning. You've ruined what could have been a productive comment thread.
    • (Topic to get the juices flowing this Sunday morning!...) Actually, the situation has almost nothing to do with "lack of skills", especially since assembly-line skills can be taught to anyone, including Americans, certainly. Rather, the inadequacy-to-impossibility of large-scale tech manufacturing in America today, and the reasons why America finds tech manufacturing completely onerous in the 21st century, has to do with politically driven laws amid a plethora of non-scientific, utterly politicized "science-fact" that is patently false, punitive business taxation at every turn, an array of judicial fines of unimaginable scope and complexity, and, last but not least, American unionization strictures that serve to actually slay job creation and hobble all such manufacturing endeavors in America before they can get off the ground. Globalism emerged, they tell us, as the needed answer to American hubris and an unholy American drive to excel. Unless one is buried under mounds of political propaganda, it's easy to see the absurdity of labeling the employees of SpaceX, for instance, as "unskilled labor"... Etc. ad infinitum. At one time in the recent past, American manufacturing prowess was the envy of the world in a wide variety of technical fields! The current federal and state government roadblocks against America becoming competitive globally in tech manufacturing are considerable, it's true, as anyone with a working brain knows. But remarkably, that is only half the story! The other half of the story is, of course, the corporations themselves... Chinese tech manufacturing is simply unassailable in terms of profits, because the Chinese government wants to see its tech manufacturing second-to-none globally so that no companies/nations can compete in terms of ROI, and China has completely succeeded in that goal. Let's tic-off a few things: *Chinese tariff policies are set according to what is considered best for Chinese business, Chinese employees, and the Chinese people. Huge difference with how things are done with tariffs in the US--as the US government (SCOTUS in this case, Congress in others) plainly feels that tariffs are "unfair" for the limited number of citizens who may pay them, whereas nothing is "unfair" when Congress considers the Personal Income Tax rates to be infinitely hike-able, along with infinitely enlarging annual budget deficits. *The Chinese government boldly subsidizes Chinese companies to artificially amplify their profits. *The Chinese government deliberately refuses to avidly demonize Chinese businesses and does not consider Chinese businesses "the enemy", so very unlike American (D)s these days. *Chinese labor laws and businesses are allowed to set their own labor policies according to what Chinese companies consider is best for companies and their employees... Simply put, American workers in tech manufacturing are not allowed to set their own labor policies! It is the height of hypocrisy for Americans to decry working conditions in China while simultaneously ensuring that American products are manufactured in China, not in the US, simply to maximize profits. There is nothing wrong with making a profit, of course, absolutely nothing. But there is plenty wrong with attempts to normalize hypocrisy of this kind! But rank hypocrisy and the (D) party in the US are longtime bedfellows... The current government in Washington is working overtime to see if it can toss out the horribly poor, failed economic policies of the past, while the (D)s still in Washington work very hard to bring back the stupidity whenever possible. With the right policies in place, America can be an infinitely competitive manufacturer.
