I "think" what arciced is saying (not really sure as its sorta poorly worded) is that he tried to delete 4 folders from an explorer window and it deleted all of them. I haven't encountered this problem though.

What I have encountered is an issue where the FTP client doesn't like to delete files. Its only been present in 5744 as far as I know though.

i was able to reduplicate the bug.. stupid programmers rushing another product as usuall... its hard to explain except i just drag my mouse so that i select 3 or 4 folders and sometimes it will say if i want to move the entire parent folder into the recycle bin.. it happens when after you select the folders that they are grey highlighted instead of blue

Well did you actually report the bug and the steps to reproduce it or did you just come here and complain instead?

I am sorry you lost data, but you should be well aware of the risks of running pre-release software.

you need to do a better job of explaining this. Are you pressing the delete key? Are you dragging to the recycle bin? Does this happen every time you try to delete folders? Need more info. The highlight turns grey when the folder loses focus. It's not possible to delete files from explorer if you're not focused on that window. As soon as you return focus, the highlight turns blue again. I cannot replicate this bug and don't understand how it's happening to you.

the folders and files in the parent fodler were in list order. the folders were ordered first on top then files under.. i hold down the left mouse button on the white space next to the first folder and drag over the folders under it to select more than one. they get selected and then turn gray, i press delete key and it wants to delete the parent folder.. now it dont always do this. but i can reduplicate it easy by going from download folder to roaming newsbin folder doing the same selecting thing back and forth between those folders and it will do it consistantly

ive had a similar thing happen. It appears to have something to do with the selecting of items in the new explorer. If you float your mouse over files, it highlights them with a grey bar.

In XP if i copy a folder from somewhere then want to paste it into another folder, i right click copy the source folder, then right click somewhere in the white space of the explorer window in the target folder and select paste. The source is then copied into the target as expected.

In vista, the grey select appears to get in the way and you have to be really careful where you right click, as if you are highlighting a grey row by floating over it, then you paste, it puts the copied content into the folder that was highlighted by the grey bar.

(wow, this is hard to explain! does anyone know what i mean!? )

what is the purpose of the float over highlighting in vista? it's bloody annoying

maybes the smrter folks here will understand, my bug exploit wasnt that complicated because it can be done by a mindless act and has heppened to me several times now and i have to make sure what the delete box says or ill lose everything cos it perm deletes them too lol

What kind of device was this on: Hard Drive, Removable, Flash?

I just had something similar happen to a flash-drive - only moved a selected folder, and then was told that some of the files I were trying to move within the folder were no longer there. I cancelled and then didn't see anything in the drive window. I then disconnected the flash-drive, re-connected it, and all of the files - including the ones that it said were missing - we all there.

maybe the tree view panel is in focus when your delete your files. it happens to me in xp. i select files to delete, then somehow the tree view panel was in focus, and it deleted what was selected in the tree view instead.

if that were the case then the alt.binaries.tv would have been blue too.. believe me i did not click on the tree view or anything else after selecting it.. while selecting they were selecting gray.. i've been using XP since '02 and never had this happen

LOL I can reduplicate this now everytime I know how to do it..

all you got to do is:

1.) click the parent folder in the tree panel first.

2.) do not click on any other folders, files, anything that will take the focus away.

3.) hold the let mouse button down in a blank space in the folder file pan on the right and select the folder and files

then youll see they are grayed out.. like the other guy said the tree pan actually still has the focus (while it too is grayed) and even after selecting in a different pan.. because i dont make a full mouse click in the panel im selecting the items in.. lolz

I cannot recreate your problem following these direct steps. As soon as I click in an empty space to select folders/files, that panel gets focus and the highlight is blue.

i went to try it again and it didnt work until i narrowed it down some more ive been able to do this in list and detailed view, havent tried others.. it was easier in list view actually..

what i understand further now is that when you go click to make a selection that the mouse down even needs to take place in the vicinity of the first item you are going to select. meaning if you made a full click it would select that item. Instead you make an in between action with the full click as you drag your mouse to select other items. it grays out every time as long as you first click the parent folder in the tree view for focus.. i can show you on netmeeting.. actually does vista even have netmeeting?? when i went to help someone over the net with something i found i had to fire up my old p3 laptop with xp to get on netmeeting, a real misery to wait like 5 minutes to get it ready.. i guess ill google it and see how to put it in

arciced: I think you've just got something funny going on. Now you're talking about "in-between" mouse-click events and it's just not making sense. Others are reporting a similar problem, but I'm unable to reproduce it. I'm using 5840 so maybe it is a bug and the bug has been fixed.

I know see what you are saying and to be honest you are being rather misleading.

The screenshot you give us shows both being grayed out for a reason.

You have another window taking focus. That means your selection and the tree will be grey by default.

However if you have the window in focus then either the tree or the items selected are blue.

If the tree is blue then that will be deleted. If the selected files in the pane are blue then they will be deleted.

This is just another ID 10-T situation.

    • Still 3x what it should cost. So, it seems the trick is to increase price by 6x so that a reduction in price back to 4x looks like a steal. "You savvy shoppers win again!" I'm glad I'm not in a desperate spot to actually even need this overpriced crap. Hopefully, it comes back down by the time for when (or if) I ever do.

    • Microsoft wants to end printer driver headaches with Windows Ready Print by Usama Jawad A few days ago, Microsoft released Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8553, bringing a ton of enhancements such as Start menu customization, search improvements, Taskbar polish, and other minor UI tweaks. Another relatively major enhancement snuck deep within the change log was related to upgrades to the Windows printing experience. Now, Microsoft has shared more details about these benefits. For starters, Microsoft has renamed its Modern Print Platform to Windows Ready Print. The company believes that this name highlights its shift in strategy, which now focuses on modernizing, securing, and streamlining the printing experience for Windows devices. Some of the upgrades present in Windows Ready Print have already been seeded to customers and partners. This includes ending support for third-party printer drivers via Windows Update and transitioning towards the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and the native Windows IPP printer driver. In line with these changes, new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print on eligible devices starting from July 2026. However, Microsoft recognizes that not all environments will be able to migrate to this platform immediately, so it will allow users to choose between installing the printer via Windows Ready Print or the traditional OEM process. Users will be able to toggle this configuration through Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners > Printer preferences. This control applies only to new printer installations, and its functionality can also be modified via Group Policy as follows: Launch Group Policy Editor Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers Find and select 'Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking' -> double click to open it Select 'Enabled' (if you wish to enable Windows Ready Print driver selection) or 'Disabled' (if you wish to explicitly disable Windows Ready Print driver selection). Select Apply Select OK Similarly, if you set up Windows protected print mode through the same setting in Windows 11, it will also default to using Windows Ready Print exclusively. Microsoft hopes that these improvements will help eradicate dependency on OEM-specific driver installation processes and simplify printer installations. We'll likely find out more about other tangible benefits in the coming months.
