Adobe Reader 8.0 Released

do you people use 56k not to be able to dl 20mb? its not like 600mb from torrents :p even 600mb is not that big.

1) Some people have slow connections.

2) Other pdf viewers are much smaller (foxit's installer is 1.6MB) and still get the job done

3) Bigger installer usually means more memory usage, wasted resources

oh noes! last time i checked, memory was meant to be used.

Your memory is not limitless. If it was, no one would bother using alternatives to Norton ;)

Same thing goes for Foxit and Adobe. Why, unless a specific feature is not in Foxit, would you bother using something that uses 10x more memory?

No, your operating system will not "run out of memory" but many programs that use more memory than they have to can lead to simple lag for other tasks. You can try to open up my computer and see it takes quite a while for example. Of course, whether you install adobe reader or foxit reader will not directly impact your computer's performance, it's always a combination of factors :)

Faster for me here. (Y)

Opened a 6Mb PDF in less than 1 sec on my AthlonXP +1800.

And all those people that keep complaining about the size of the downloads. This is free software. No one is forcing you to use it. Maybe you should think about that next time you are downloading an illegal torrent.

what I would say to these 'some' people is, to either not update or download it at work/school/library. even leave their computer on overnight with Free Download Manager running to get it. that's what I used to do on 56k at least.

Says the man probably using firefox which is probably using wayyy more than 100mb... stop whining.. jesus its 20mb, 20mb temporarly used for viewing a PDF..

so they probably could have optimised it a lot more, but then again, commerical software hasnt been that way for a good few years now..

the forum comments sounds positive, but one thing that was brought up, is the auto creation of folders like previous versions, i was wondering if it could be prevented/disabled, for example previous versions created a folder eBook and it was disabled in the registry... thanks

rename update.api to anything else to stop the creation of the updater5 folder in my documents...

on a side note, anyone hating the new app icon? or is it just me...

1 more thing, anyone know how to get the status bar out? i mean the one where you can select how you view the page, rather than going to view then selecting from there

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
