Adobe Reader 8.0 Released

Recommended Posts

if the reader version works as well as the full blown version, it should be really nice.

The only thing I miss, is the "x" in the upper right corner of the full blown version of 7 where

you could close the open PDF, but leave acrobat open. I guess the got rid of that in 8. At least

you can Ctrl-W to do the same thing.

:( The Enterprise lockdown keys from 7 don't appear to work with this version either.

The what? Where?

Version 7 had a set of tables in the MSI for locking down the install for corporate users.

EnterpriseRegistry, EnterpriseFeatures, EnterpriseShortcuts, etc, etc.

For example, setting some of the keys would disable certain menu items, etc.

What I meant was that I tried setting those values in the corresponding version 8 keys in the registry, but they had no effect.

I am guessing Adobe will put all that in the Installshield Tuner for version 8, but it is not released yet.

And since they apparently differ from those in version 7, I can't set them manually. So...like Acrobat Pro, I will have to wait until they release the Tuner before I can deploy it.

And for all those complaining about the bloat, etc...

Some of us don't get a choice. This is the product of choice where I work. I deploy what they say to deploy.

For those running Vista x64 and getting an error at install like I did, search your profile's AppData folder for the setup folder after you launch it but before you approve it to run when the security notice pops up. Then run AcroRead.msi; setup.exe will just crash again.

Try this. Open the Preferences (Edit>Preferences or Ctrl+K). Click on the Documents category, and try playing with the "Show each document in its own window (requires restart)" option. You should get it to your liking one way or the other. Otherwise, there is a separate little "X" for each open window inside the main Acrobat window.

I like version 8 quite a bit. However, it keeps creating an "Updater5" directory in My Documents and its really getting on my nerves. So much so that I am considering going back to 7.x. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop this behavior?

I'm not sure if the path will be the same in Adobe Reader 8.0, but in Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional, I could simply go to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\plug_ins directory and either rename or delete the file(s) named Updater. This should stop the folder from being created, and will obviously also stop the Update feature from working in the program.

Awesome, this worked great. Thanks for this tip.

I really like how documents can be in their own windows now, much easier to work with more than one PDF at the same time. Now if I can only get Excel to do the same thing...

By the way, does anyone know of a way to hide the navigation panel buttons (list of buttons on the left side of the document) by default?

You can disable the Update5 directory by doing:

Help > Check for Updates

After it's checked click on Preferences, and change the file location at the bottom of the dialog to somewhere else.

While this would work to stop the Updater5 folder from being created in My Documents, this would simply cause it to be created someplace else. I think the original poster asked if there was a way to disable it from being created anywhere.

Actually, this can be done in Excel 2002 and 2003, but not in Excel 2000. It's in the options. Just go to Tools>Options. On the View tab, you have an option to enable or disable "Windows in Taskbar".

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
