Adobe Reader 8.0 Released

While this would work to stop the Updater5 folder from being created in My Documents, this would simply cause it to be created someplace else. I think the original poster asked if there was a way to disable it from being created anywhere.

Actually, this can be done in Excel 2002 and 2003, but not in Excel 2000. It's in the options. Just go to Tools>Options. On the View tab, you have an option to enable or disable "Windows in Taskbar".

I'm running 2003, however, this option simply enables each document to have an item on the taskbar, but all documents are still contained within a single Excel window (which is rather confusing, IMO). I might be able to play with the file type settings to disable DDE for .xls files which may cause a new window to open for each Excel file opened from explorer, but this is only a half solution since I'd still like to use the File | Open option in an existing Excel window to open a new window. Oh well, maybe Excel 2007 does this?

i just installed it to see what it was like. on my computer at work, it was pretty slow when scrolling between pages and also when clicking the buttons along the side. i ended up uninstalling it and kept Foxit instead.

also when i went to install it, i couldn't believe that it was 120mb. i think that's too much for something that i use occasionally.

Man this version is shocking what justifys 115mb install just to read a document like OMG.

I thought version 7 was bloatware at 65mb nevermind 115mb !!

Delete the Setup cache from Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Setup Files.

The what? Where?

Version 7 had a set of tables in the MSI for locking down the install for corporate users.

EnterpriseRegistry, EnterpriseFeatures, EnterpriseShortcuts, etc, etc.

For example, setting some of the keys would disable certain menu items, etc.

What I meant was that I tried setting those values in the corresponding version 8 keys in the registry, but they had no effect.

I am guessing Adobe will put all that in the Installshield Tuner for version 8, but it is not released yet.

And since they apparently differ from those in version 7, I can't set them manually. So...like Acrobat Pro, I will have to wait until they release the Tuner before I can deploy it.

And for all those complaining about the bloat, etc...

Some of us don't get a choice. This is the product of choice where I work. I deploy what they say to deploy.

Looks like we will have to wait until Adobe release 'Customization Wizard 8' (the next version of Installshield Tuner) before we can lock down settings. :(

Was this already here?

If you have geforce 6/7/8 try this:

Having purchased and installed a supporting graphics card, activating these features is easy. Using your on-screen cursor, simply browse the EDIT menu and select PREFERENCES. Choose the PAGE DISPLAY tab. Under the heading RENDERING, check the box next to USE 2D GPU ACCELERATION. Click OK to start exploring the horizon-broadening (and visually arresting) future of information storage, sharing and retrieval.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
    • eh I'll wait for the June 2026 MVS ISO downloads which should be coming out next Tuesday June 16 and possibly contain build 8655 instead of 8653

    • Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 PC case is now 33% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 is currently $109.99 on Amazon, down from its original $164.99 list price. That's 33% off and $55 saved on this premium aluminum mid-tower case with a modular design. If you're upgrading your PC case and want something that doesn't force you into a rigid layout, the MasterFrame 600 is worth a look. The case is built around the Cooler Master's FreeForm 2.0 platform, which lets you reconfigure the internal structure according to your hardware. Magnetic side panels allow for straightforward adjustments, and the case supports everything from Mini-ITX to E-ATX motherboards without compromise. There's also generous cooling headroom. Four pre-installed PWM fans handle airflow out of the box. GPU clearance goes up to 410mm, and the case supports radiators up to 420mm with room for three simultaneously. Truth be told, this might not be the prettiest case on the market, but it’s highly functional. The aluminum construction keeps the whole thing lightweight despite its size, and the finish looks noticeably better than the plastic mid-towers competing at this price point. If you want a serious, flexible case that prioritizes function over flashy aesthetics like RGB lighting, the MasterFrame 600 delivers at a reasonable price.
