Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

How long do we have to stick with 72 DPI!?

I don't really get the rush some people seem to be having when it comes to the resolution independent UI. Currently there are no standard consumer screens that actually require it.

Question though: how'd you get the slider on the bottom right of finder for icon view?

It's by default there when searching in the Finder. At least it is here.

It is only there because of this:

Interesting though that the slider allows you to go all the way up to 512x512 pixels while the regular view options do not.

I hate the fact that Apple didn't update all of their icons to 512x512 pixels. There are so many left that only go up to 128x128 pixels.

They probably will be updated by 10.5.1.

Hey Xero, any more news on your Leopard theme?

There likely won't be any official way to theme leopard for awhile, I'm working on it, I'm trying to convert what I have already to vector based graphics for whenever apple does flip the resolution independence switch. Knowing Unsanity, there likely won't be a shapeshifter for some time. :(

I modded my dock if anyone would like the files for that. Click image for bigger pic

Could you share your Finder icon?

I've just updated my father's Mac Mini to Leopard and he seems to be enjoying it. However, there are a few issues, some of them minor but a few are major:

  • Solitaire XL functions except for a few quirks. When you select the card on the deck, it changes to another card. I don't know if it is a bug or not but it certainly is funny and confusing  !
  • Safari crashes when trying to load/download a PDF file. I suspect it is due to Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional installed so the only fix available is to use Firefox to download PDF files.
  • The 3D dock is slow on the Mac Mini, especially when zooming (1.83 GHz Core Duo with 512 MB of RAM). I suspect it needs an upgrade before performance becomes acceptable, though I wish it were not so.
  • My father finds Quick Look a joy to use as he can now just press spacebar to preview a PDF before opening it in Acrobat.
  • The updated Finder is quite nice though I'm still a bit peeved that it doesn't remember window sizes.
  • Spotlight is quicker in Leopard in Tiger though it took a long time to index my LaCie 250GB hard drive.

Also, I want to set up Time Machine but I've been hearing reports that it needs a dedicated harddrive for it to work instead of a partition. If it does, how big does the harddrive need to be? If it doesn't, how big does the partition need to be?

Overall, not much of an upgrade from Tiger but still a good upgrade. Thumbs up from me and my father (Y) !

The minimum size of the backup drive is the size of the drive you want to back up.

So if the hard drive in my Mac Mini is 80GB, I can set up a hard drive or partition it to 80GB?

If the Mac Mini is 80 GB then you would either want:

- An 80GB or more external HDD.

- Or a partition of 80 GB or more.

So I can used my current external hard drive? Then I have no problem :D . But I'll probably give it about 60 GB as I'll be using the other 20 GB for booting into Vista.

hey, so, when I installed leopard, one of the new features is that it has a download folder. And that folder is used as a stack on the dock. However, I had already set up a similar feature when I was using Tiger and as a result, it simply used that folder that I had already created as the stack on the dock. The problem is that I had created a custom folder icon for that folder and it did not change when leopard installed and I had wanted the default leopard download folder icon. I am wondering if there is an easy way of getting this back or if someone could simply send me a copy of the folder with the correct icon. Thanks

Well it never asked me that when deleting the trash in Tiger, i can tell you that much.

The actual feature of pressing

Option

to delete locked items has been implemented for years but your right the prompt in your screenie is new to Leopard.

sorry to deviate the discussion a little, but why do so many people have acrobat installed? what does it bring that os x can't do natively?

Do you mean full Acrobat or just the reader?

iTunes still has old-style traffic lights.

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
    • Microsoft, totally not confusing /s 25H2 - Current for non-Arm based Windows 26H1 - Current for Arm based Windows 26H2 - Only for non Arm Windows
    • After I installed those, my older but capable Win 11 laptop (16GB RAM) reported it as 26H2 26300.8697. Then I installed it on my big laptop (128GB RAM! Hehe sorry), it reported it as 25H2 26220.8690. Ugh. Do I have to switch Insiders channels from Release to Beta?
