Hum
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A woman who went into a vegetative state more than six years ago awoke this week for three days and spoke with her family and a local television station before slipping back. "I'm fine," Christa Lilly told her mother on Sunday ? her first words in eight months. She has awakened four other times for briefer periods since suffering a heart attack and stroke in November of 2000. "I think it's wonderful. It makes me so happy," Lilly told television station KKTV-TV. She also got to see youngest daughter, Chelcey, now 12 years old, and three grandchildren. Before her relapse on Wednesday, Lilly told the station her biggest frustration was learning how to talk again. After years of being fed from a tube, eating was no problem. "I've been eating cake," she said. Her neurologist, Dr. Randall Bjork, said he couldn't explain how or why she awoke. "I'm just not able to explain this on the basis of what we know about persistent vegetative states," he said. A vegetative state is much like a coma except Lilly's eyes remain open. Bjork said that he's never seen a similar quality of awakening. Bjork said that unlike the much publicized case of Terri Schiavo, Lilly is minimally conscious. He said she could awake again. After Lilly relapsed her mother and caregiver Minnie Smith said: "The good Lord let me know she's alright, he brings her back to visit every so often and I'm thankful for that." source

Rob2687
I read an article in a recent Time Magazine about this guy with brain cancer or something. Virtually his entire brain was destroyed and he was in a coma but he woke up one night and said goodbye to his family right before he died. Max Veteran Posted March 9, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 9, 2007 There was another one a couple of years ago now where he was in a coma for 20 years, he came back and remembered everything 20 years ago, even things like phone numbers, names and addresses. Man that sucks. I would rather die then have that happen to me. I hope he is doing well.

wst50
My bus driver once had a 3 month coma. He missed Christmas by about 6 days o.0 Also, I don't think God would put someone in a coma for 6 years and awaken them every now and again. I don't know enough about comas or religion to give an alternative, I just don't think God is into changing his mind like that. I'm happy for the familty and they can believe what they want, but I ain't sure it's a thing done by God, least not this particular case, as least. Nashy
Lets not turn this into a religious debate guys. There is absolutely and utterly no need. This bogles the mind. Its amazing how little our specialists know about human problems.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted March 11, 2007 Veteran Share Posted March 11, 2007 There is a myth that our brain is unable to regrow damaged brain cells. The brain can heal itself from some damage. It seems that her brain is trying to heal itself as best it can. Of course, some injuries like a completed destroyed brain stem are not going to be healed sufficiently to regain consciousness. In her case, however, it clearly is fighting to do just that.
