Smoking ban not good for everyone

Smoke ban creates bit of a stink

Laura Kemp, Wales on Sunday

WATCH out Wales - the smoking ban could be a bit of a stinker!

In Scotland, where cigarettes were outlawed from pubs a year ago, one drinker has blamed the ban after his local barred him for farting.

Stewart Laidlaw was asked to leave Thirsty Kirsty's in Dunfermline, Fife, when another regular complained about his trumping.

Pub staff told the 35-year-old not to return, claiming he "basked in the glory" of his whiffy ways.

But angry Stewart said his fellow drinkers did not have a problem with his wind before the clampdown.

"No-one could smell anything when the pub was full of cigarette smoke. I never used to complain about the smell of their cigarette smoke, but now everyone complains about me.

"It's just a natural thing. What can I do about it?" moaned the local who had been drinking there for seven years.

"I must be the first person in the country to get banned from a pub for passing wind. But it's not a title I want. I certainly don't see it as funny."

Landlord John Thow said fed-up regulars had had enough.

"It has become way beyond a joke. At first, we asked him politely to stop.

"Since then, he has been warned on many occasions. The final straw was when an old gentleman came in and had his gin and tonic and you could see he was almost physically sick," he said.

Having organic, non-harmful odours, or have cancer-causing chemicals cover up said organic odour which is no less present. Such a hard choice wouldn't you say?

Methane isn't always "non-harmful" .... Thats such a "catholic" statement.... Kinda like the world is round. How do you know he doesn't have anal gonorrhea, and happens to have seepage that is leaving not only a four odor, but also possibly floating microbes. Lets looks at it this way.... When you "smell" something, what is actually happening? Those particles are entering your body far enough for your receptors to react to them and tell your brain what is in your vicinity. With how weak the human sence of smell is, yes, something could definitely kill you before you even got a wiff of it.

I have never read an article or heard in the news "Local man suffered and went to the hospital because of another man's farts. More at 11" but if it does happen, I'll make sure to listen to it!

Farting can't kill you, or those around you. Not to my knowledge, anyways (and no I don't want to test my theory).

Mythbusters tested that theory. It's highly unlikely.

interesting

whats a better bar/pub smell? stale beer and smoke ; or stale beer, body odour, and other body gases?

personally it never bothered me to go in a pub full of smoke (btw not a smoker), it felt natural for the environment; better than smelly airpits and bad breath and other funks you smell now.

I'm all for the ban of smoke in most public places, but i feel bars should be an exception (to mask other worse smells)
