I think pple have said that 3.6ghz on this is a breeze =| I don't know, this is off the top of my head, maybe it was 3.2ghz. What memory do u have (PC2-5300?)? 3ghz isn't too shabby tho with everything else @ stock (u're even running a stock cooler right?). I reread the original few posts, no o'cing eh, pffft, throw that out the window lol... Don't forget too, u can turn up the video card fan to help with temps or to o'c more if u really want to. Disable Q-Fan and Speedstep too if u are going to run this o'c all the time :)

If u get around to it Radish, post ur 3dmark again with o'c as a comparison :)

3.2GHz would be more than enough for this setup, not using the stock cooler but an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7. Currently using Corsair DDR2-5300, I also don't use Q-Fan or Speedstep.

Radish?

3ghz seems like a good overclock. Anything beyond that seems kind of pointless. I have also heard that the 6600 will get to 3.2 on stock cooling and up to 4.5 on water. I got mine to 2.97 on stock cooling but the temps are a little higher than what i would like though thats party because my room is so warm.

Argh, just seem to have bad luck I do :pinch:

Been getting BSOD's of late and the "nv4_disp.dll" file kept on coming up, updated to the latest 158.22 WHQL's with no change. Also I can't seem to extract archives when I downloaded them from the internet.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4 would not extract as part of it's setup and I redownloaded it a few times. Ran CHKDSK /R on the boot drive, and it passed with no errors. Last thing was Memtest, and it fails straight from the start :(

Now gotta get some new RAM :hmmm:

Radish?

No that usually means that your ram cant handle your overclock. Try these things and then run another memory test.

1. make sure you increased the latency on the ram. Latency is measured in cycles so if the processor is doing more cycles in a second your ram will have to go faster. Increasing the latencies will give the ram some breathing room.

2. If that doesnt work then try lowering the multiplier on your ram so that it runs at a slower speed but doesnt slow doen your cpu.

3. If all else fails lower overclock.

4. if that doesnt work then you need new ram.

Good news and bad news (as before) -

Good news - One of the sticks passes on Memtest.

Bad news - The other fails from the start, but they are part of a 2GB Corsair kit. Which probably means I'll have to return both and be without a working PC :(

Radish?

sorry to hear that Radish, but I have confidence in Corsair to resolve ur issue :) When u were testing with memtest, was ur o'c profile still intact? Could this also be part of the reason it fails (ie revert things back to stock). Again not o'c and I don't have alot of experience with it to understand if this could be why it is failing. I'm assuming u're working with a ratio or have ur DDR2 set to a specific speed.

Try the latency trick, or over volt the memory. Most of the higher end DDR2 kits are detected as 1.6/1.8V (I forget which one), and the manfuacturer would suggest running at 1.9/2.0/2.1/2.2V (it'll be under warranty so check the website). I'm not sure which exact model u have, I'll assume PC2-5400/DDR2-667 XMS2?

I think I know what was wrong - the ratio for the RAM. It was running at 5:4, but it doesn't make sense that one of the sticks would be faulty (thought both would be bad).

Anyway, got it on track now with the image attached :D

BFG have said they want the GFX card first before issuing a replacement, and Ebuyer said I can't send a single stick of RAM to them - it has to be the whole kit.

So it looks like I'll have to get some RAM and a cheap PCI-E card, while the RMA's are done :/

arrrgghhh - bad =|

so u're going to RMA the video card, let me know how that goes, if u are going thru with it :)

For the Ram, I'll assume that one stick is better than the other (it happens) in terms of being able to handle the bandwidth. Yeah we had 1 stick go bad on us here at work (Corsair also), and the guy said no we need the whole kit, not the 1 stick.

You can always get a PCI card for now, then u can let me know about the garbage on the screen if it's still there :p I can't remember for the life of me if my 7800GT had this issue with garbage :(

Not going to RMA the 8800 GTS for the time being (doesn't really bother me to be honest), the RAM is going to be RMA'ed though (more important).

I'm thinking it's the 8800 BIOS that has the issue.

Radish?

dare to update the bios on the video card Mr. Prime? :) I know I don't have the nuts to do that lol. Well u do have 10yrs to decide on the video card. I myself am not bothered by it anymore, but it is something that annoyed me in the beginning since no one has reported this issue on google searches. You're the only one I know that has almost the same setup as myself. Anyhow will be getting a new board eventually so we'll see what happens (possibly in the fall/winter timeframe).

Am interested in seeing how the Ram thing goes Radish. Thanks for posting all ur info and helping me feel at ease with the whole 8800 P5W-DH problem :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Is there BIOS updates for the GFX card? :shifty: I'll probably update the motherboard when the X38 chipset is out.

I sent the RAM off yesterday via RM Special Delivery, they recieved it today - hopefully I'll get my new RAM next week (Y)

^ Guess not :p

Now a technical question, my RAM is currently running at 5-6-6-2 timings. I looked on the Corsair website and it states 5-5-5-15-2T - which is correct and would I see any benefit changing to 5-5-5-15-2T timings?

Did you mean 5-6-6-12? 2 seems kind of tight for the last timing. If it is the same corsair RAM as what I have, it should run fine at 4-4-4-12 2T which will give a little bit better performance than 5-5-5-15 or 5-6-6-12 2T. But I am not sure what would be better between 5-6-6-12 and 5-5-5-15.

edit: I clicked your link, we have different RAM so what I said may not apply.

    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
