Notes on a Scandal (2006)

I saw this movie about a month or so ago and I've been meaning to review it ever since.

Being the first movie I've seen with either Cate Blanchett or Judi Dench (apart from Dench's appearances in some of the Bond films), I'd like to think I'm being pretty unbiased when I say that both ladies delivered stellar performances in this film. The film itself (story, plot, ect.) is - in a nutshell - fantastic. I loved each and every second of it; it's easily the best film I've seen in years. The sex scenes between Blanchett's character and the teenage boy (played by a young Irish actor, Andrew Simpson, who also gives a good performance) were surprisingly more graphic than I expected; it's not porn of course, but I was expecting something a bit more subtle - but maybe I'm just old fashioned.

The film also has a bit of a twist at the end, which leaves the opportunity open for a sequel, although I doubt it would happen.

My only complaint would be that I thought it was a bit too short (98 minutes). I'm not usually one to take to sitting in a cinema for too long to watch a movie, but as I said, I enjoyed this movie enormously and would have liked maybe an extra 20-30 minutes. But perhaps that would have spoiled it...

Ignoring the duration of the film, I'd give it a 4.5 or 5/5. Well worth a watch when it comes out on DVD.
