I'm thinking, and of course this is nothing more than speculation, that Apple is going to have some way to backup the data from the iPhone to iTunes.

True, but then when it dies, you loose your Phone, Mp3 player, and PDA. Thats why I like to keep them separate.

And also remembering this has an internal (aka - non removable) battery, so unlike most other phones, you can't buy a spare one, and when that battery dies totally, then your $500/$600 iPhone has had it.

I've been with Cingular (now AT&T) for 3+ yrs. I have great reception here, and never had a problem.

Though I would love getting one of these, I can easily find the restraint not to.

I will sit back, wait for the 2nd, and perhaps even the 3rd gen iPhone. Maybe then it'll have 3G, ability to run 3rd party, and hell gps would also be nice.

Until then, my Nokia N73 will suffice. (sucks not being able to use its 3g capabilities with cingular)

Download stuff at high speeds. I've never used it because my phones have WiFi.

As does the iPhone. Hell, where I live, it's easier to find a free WiFi connection than a reliable 3G cell connection.

I know the situation may be different in the USA,

Yes, the situation is VERY different in the US. You have to remember that many, if not most of our states are larger than your entire country, with many areas very sparsely populated. That is why infrastructure changes like 3G and fiber-to-the-home take so much longer to roll out here than in many other parts of the world.

Apple banks on the mindless sheep that buy their products just because they "look good". There's nothing innovative or 'must have' about the iPhone, it's just a very cool set of gimmicks all rolled into a pleasant package, at a premium price.

Truthfully, if you're stupid enough to buy the iPhone, you deserve to be fleeced. Ironically all the people getting it to be cool will suddenly find that everyone else around them also owns one, making it totally uncool to own in the end.

I'm personally enjoying my super-thin, super-useful and versatile SE W880i which has everything (including 3G) in a package much smaller than the iPhone, and much more unique.

As someone already stated here the same can be said about any product, generalizing the iPhone as you did just shows ignorance.

I always find it funny when people say Apple is brainwashing people. Is that why Microsoft dominates the market? Yet they don't consider the "wow is now" crap brainwashing?

Think of it like the matrix over 80% of the population is in it, and only a handful aren't. We form Apples fanbase ;)

Besides I dun care who you are the iPhone is one hell of an smartphone and one if not the best on the market (when its released) there are some nice ones coming that have been announced but none are out yet. But remember its not all hardware its software, and Mac software is what makes something as amazing as it is, ask anyone running OS X.

To all the posters that have an opinion that the iPhone won't be that good I say this, stay with your berrynok sonyeric's semen phones with their fudgy interface's, silly rings, daft menus and outdated looks. The iPhone is unquestionably going to knock the market in the right direction and perhaps make the other makers rethink what a phone is supposed to be.

Easy to use

It also helps if it's going to be the best looking mobile on the market bar none.

I can see the software lock on the iPhone being battered in a short amount of time, i mean, its a closed platform, but depending on the security implemented, someone only has to figure out how to create an app that will run on the thing, i doubt apple have gone to a big deal of blocking out 3rd party software, its just no-one knows how to create software for it.

It will be hacked, there is no doubts about it.

Its mega overpriced, but such a cool gadget.

From your post, I can only assume two things:

1. You have not used one of those phones before

2. You are easily confused

I think you would be hard pressed to find people that are confused by their phones. Don't exaggerate the current situation. I have a MDA. Want to use the calculator? Start -> Calculator. Want to play Age of Empires? Start -> Games -> Age of Empires. Want to use the internet? Hit the hardkey for Internet. Want to make a call? Hit the call button.

If you have trouble using the MDA interface, then you have never used a computer before in your life.

I'm all for the iPhone, but I find it's interface a bit lame. It really just looks like the Palm OS. A whole bunch of icons on a blank background. What am I missing here?

The only thing I really like about the iPhone is it's media player which is an area that cell phones seem to lack.

Just an example of how the iPhone interface is not impossible to replicate, there are many many mods that will change a WM5 to look like the iPhone.

From what you said here, I take it you have only seen pictures of the iPhone and haven't watched the MacWorld keynote where Steve Jobs demoed it.

Tsk, tsk, tsk ;)

Mobiles don't confuse me, they just aggravate me.

btw those palm phones are as ugly as sin :x

check out the calamari ad too.

Hmmmm.....changing the WM5 interface to replicate Apple's iPhone.. The sincerest form of flattery as they say.

Well, as if the phone couldn't get more disappointing. First no 3g support and now no ichat support at first release. Now what say you people? So this is being marketed toward the teen/young adult group, who IM like crazy, but has no support for IM out of the box? WTF?

4. An iChat program will not be included in the initial operating system. Coupled with the lack of support for 3rd party apps for the time being, this means that there will be no way to get your instant messaging fix for now.

the backup would be nice, but i'm talking more about down time, of not having it.

Well, considering I started the thread, it is safe to say I've seen the ads. Again, its not like you can't do that right now with a Mobile PC phone. I can open up TCMPC, watch Pirates of the Caribbean, open up Portable IE or Firefox or Opera, search for Seafood. Nothing new.

Again, the only thing that I really like is that the phone knows when it is being held vertical or hortizonal. On the other hand, I will not buy it because I need hard-key keyboards unless there is tactile feedback when you hit an onscreen key. On my MDA, I have a touchscreen keyboard that vibrates for a split second every time you strike a key. It's not as good as the hard-key keyboard, but is good for short messages.

Personally, I don't find the iPhone to be that appealing.

I have a hearing problem, so the only choice for me is to use Blackberry.

Well that's an unsubstantiated report at the moment. I'm not believing anything until Apple states it or I see for myself.

    • Owing to the nature of Windows feature enablement updates, it was distributed over Windows Update services as a complete system upgrade rather than as an ordinary cumulative update
    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release by Usama Jawad Windows 11 typically follows an annual update cycle, but Microsoft recently broke that tradition a bit by releasing a "26H1" version in the first half of this year as a "scoped" build for select new silicon PCs only. This version was not available for customers using 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as Microsoft is busy preparing version 26H2 for them, confirmed officially for the first time. In a Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has urged IT admins to prepare for the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2. The company has confirmed that this will be a small enablement package (eKB) that will simply light up certain disabled features that are already present in the operating system's code base. This means that the "refined" Windows update and deployment experience will be simpler and quicker, with minimal disruptions, as the feature update will simply toggle a few flags rather than performing a complete replacement. Microsoft has explained that this is all possible because the standard Windows 11 releases share the same servicing branch and hence, the same source code. However, this also means that Windows 11 26H1 users won't be able to upgrade to 26H2 as that is a different branch, but this is something we have known for a while now. Similar to previous annual feature updates, Windows 11 26H2 will offer the following support cycles: 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions 36 months of support for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions Microsoft has not confirmed a concrete release date for Windows 11 26H2, but noted that it is "coming soon". If we go by the ongoing release cadence, we can expect it to begin rolling out in early October 2026. As such, IT admins have been encouraged to begin validating Windows Insider releases in the Experimental Channel, plan rollout rings, and strategize the utilization of their existing deployment tools.
    • Windows 11 gets new audio improvements in the latest builds by Taras Buria Today's Experimental builds (26H1 and Future Platforms, formerly Canary) pack several audio-related improvements. If your device is enrolled in the Experimental Channel (26H1), you can download build 28120.2315, while those in the Future Platforms version have build 29613.1000 to try. Here is what is new in build 29613.1000: [Audio] Following up on our previous improvements, we’re making some more adjustments to Settings > System > Sounds based on your feedback. Namely, we’ve updated the “All sound devices” page so: You now have the ability to change default devices from this page. Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing. We’ve adjusted the page design slightly so now you can filter whether you’re viewing input or output devices. We’ve added toggles so you can choose if you want to hide or show disabled, disconnected, and unplugged devices on this page. We’ve also updated the input and output audio properties page for devices in Settings to now include jack information for those that need it. And here is the changelog for build 28120.2315: This update includes a small number of minor bug fixes and improvements. [Accessibility] This update improves caption style responsiveness by redrawing captions immediately for caption style changes. If no current caption is visible, a sample caption string is displayed. [Audio] This update improves the reliability of the inbox HD Audio driver. You can find the official release notes for build 28120.2315 here and for build 29613.1000 here.
    • I agree with what I think you are saying, just not in the way you are saying it. Like any tool, the amount it represents your work is perorational to the effort you put into it. It is similar to why 2nd grade math students learning to add and subtract are not allowed to use calculators, but a high-school calculous student is. For the 2nd grader, that tool would completely replace the work they are doing, for the calculous student the same tool allows them to work far more effectively while in no way replacing their effort or knowable. If you spend 30 seconds writing a prompt, then the image that comes out is no more "yours" than if you found the same image with a Google Image search. However, many of these generative tools also support highly iterative processes that allow back and forth, and merging generated images with photos or human created images. I am sure you would agree that a human spending hours of time working on a project, even if AI was involved in the process, still reflects that human's work.
