Some other Leopard stuff: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=54912

1. Dictionary can now search Wikipedia.

2. Middle clicking now works in Safari.

3. When you choose to rename file, only the filename without extension is selected.

4. You can type "exit" in Terminal to close the window.

I don't really care about the first and last new additions, but the third option will really come in handy. I've ruined countless because I kept accidentally deleting the file extension and forgetting what file type it was to begin with. Currently, middle clicking on my Mighty Mouse is set to activate Spotlight. Will middle-clicking in Safari override this behavior by default, or do I have to change something in System Preferences?

I was looking at the iPhone overview video the other day, and I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that Apple didn't go for a more or less same UI style in Mac OS X Leopard. Of course some elements have to be changed to make it more suitable for desktop OS usage and default windows definitively shouldn't use that weird blue shade, but overal I'm positive Apple could have done something amazing with it.

I don't have FireWire hard drive or cable, I'd rather not spend the money on it when I have no need for FireWire, USB 2 is fine for me, and all my plug-and-play devices are USB.

I thought you meant that there's something wrong with Firewire itself. Which I wouldn't mind hearing as I'm planning to buy one. :p

You'll have to set it to "Button 3" as such:

Yea, renaming file names without the extension is really handy. Much better than before.

Firewire is good :)

I have a FW backup HD & it's fast (I have FW 400, not 800). So I reckon FW 800 must be really good.

I've always found file transfers over FW to be faster on a Mac when compared to USB - even FW 400 beats the pants off of USB; 800 obviously is simply a cut further above :). And, price differences on external drives with 800 v. the prices of those with 400 are always shrinking, too.

Yea, I read that in theory USB 2 is faster, but when used FW is always faster.

I usually buy FW/USB caddies & put my old HDs in them. I see you can now get FW 800 & USB/FW 400/FW 800 caddies (All three outputs in the same caddy).

USB 2.0 is supposed to be faster, but Firewire has more stable transfer speeds or something like that. Plus isn't it the case that USB 2.0 requires processing power from your Mac/PC whereas a Firewire device has it's own build-in chip to handle that?

Firewire transfers in a constant stream, so it's preferred for streaming video from a DV camera or whatnot. USB transfers in bursts.

I find on my G5 that OSX slows down using USB2 transfer. So I have a dual-HDD FW enclosure and a FW burner... works great!

Got it down to 4GB while keeping all key OS stuff, playing with it. Transparency still looks retarded. There's no option to turn it off. New dock still seems bulky even at about 2/3 of the default size.

Edit: Uh, the new Front Row is cool, I guess.

Edit edit: Transparency looks horrendous with certain wallpapers, same with the dock. Certain colors look real bad with the effect the menubar is applying. Light wallpapers cause the dock base to more or less get "lost". Dark wallpapers seem to be your best bet here.

Tried Leopard... my thoughts on it (btw, I was running it on an external HD) :

The 3D Dock : Not really nice with fullscreen windows... then again maybe this is just a habit that my eyes don't have

The transparent menu at the top : Really nice sometimes... but I'd still add an option to turn the transparency off

The stability : Ok, Finder has crashed twice, but restarted without me noticing (or almost!) so it wasn't a big deal really. The graphics are a bit slow sometimes.

Finder : Coverflow doesn't work that well in the Finder with a resolution for a 24", 1024x1024 icons would be appreciated.

Dashboard : no longer has the small glowing dot at the bottom to say it's open. why?

Stacks : Really nice!

Some bugs here and there, but all in all, I think it's a really solid release. If it's really feature complete (why wouldn't it be?), the released product has no reason not to be stable. There's at least 3 whole months of bug hunting and bug fixing, which I think is a good deadline.

    • Still hate Windows 11, I stuck it on my gaming machine again just for a nose to see what they had done, still as bad. Will restore Windows 10 back on it, suit MS anyway, they don't want me to run Windows 11 on it.
    • Ms did go with the you must sign into an account thing with Windows 8 for a while. The same sort of thing they are doing with Windows now and the MS account.
    • Hello, What sort of Microsoft Authenticator account login approval requests are you getting?  It is a generic authentication app and can be used with all sorts of services (Microsoft Account, Google Account, websites and services that support multi-factor authentication, etc.). • Windows 8? Nah. I found Window 8 worked well, get a third party start menu to get rid of the start screen, I used Start is back and windows 8 was pretty good. I used it even when Windows 10 came out as I found Windows 10 was iffy on my machine at the time was AMD FX Bulldozer based. It was only when I updated the innards to Ryzen that I had no choice but to go to Windows 10 as MS made it difficult to stay with Windows 8. ME, yes, that was not great, I liked the look of it, but it was not stable, shame really because Windows 98SE was the best of the dos based Windows.
