A few more people

This is Session 3 of Neowin Mafia. Below are some information for reference.

3.jpg

The rules, guideline and game style will resemble the previous games, the link to the discussion topics are Session 1 and Session 2. There have been various changes made to this session. Thanks to Lt-DavidW for brining the game to Neowin. Game source wikiHow.

Notes Before Registration

Please be highly aware that this game requires high participation, this means checking the thread or voting on a daily basis and contributing to the discussion topic. You are required to check and double check your schedule to confirm your commitment, this enables the game to run smoothly, effectively, and more importantly, highly immersive and interactive.

Notes/Improvements

1. Neowin Mafia Voting System Beta. Indeed this will be the first session a voting system has been implimented to be the core backbone of the game. All votes will be submitted through the system, and deaths will be announced through the system statistics as well as in the discussion topic. Each player will be given a login code that leads to their personal voting page, where up to two votes can be submitted for upcoming and one future voting sessions. More details will be announced before the game begins.

Please be reminded that this system is still in Beta. Internal tests have been ran to ensure the precise working of the votes, yet there could be glitches that has yet to be found. Please report the problem or questions to this discussion topic, or PM either me or lylesback2.

Special mention and thanks to lylesback2 for creating the voting system. lylesback2 will also be the moderator for the game, to monitor the votes, statistics, as well as contribute to the cycles and discussion.

Please note, because this session is the implimentation of a completely new voting system we have decided not to change the game rules and add additional roles to the game. The suggestions discussed in the previous session, may/will be implimented in future games, but definately not this one.

2. Those who are interested will join on a first come first serve basis. Winners of the previous sessions (those who remained alive in the end) and those with high participation rates previously will have priority.

3. Due to the previous sessions of having members not active throughout the game, voting and participation will be essential to ensure your survival. Players will unfortunately be eliminated if they missed two consecutive voting sessions. If you have doubts regarding your participation please reconsider about joining the game.

4. This session will continue to have 4 Townspeople as part of an "alliance". This ensures a decent amount of communication between regular members. This raises a strong aspect of the game that could be of great benefit to the progression of the voting sessions.

The Rules

Once we have filled the players list, the moderator will assign strategically people to different characters. There are four types of characters: Mafia (4), Sheriff (1), Doctor (1), and Townspeople (14).

1. The game is played as a series of 'Day' and 'Night' Cycles. Please follow the role you have been assigned to and closely follow the progression of the cycles and vote accordingly to ensure your survival.

2. The game ends when either a) all Mafia have been eliminated and or b) the number of Mafia members and Townspeople are equal (Mafia having control of town votes).

The role of any player will not be publicly announced.

Night Cycle

First round only. The moderator will assigned Mafia members (4) and using Private Messaging (PM), inform them of the other three members who they will collaborate with.

1. The Mafia will collaborate personally and decide which player they would like to kill. The target will be submitted to the Voting System before the Night Cycle ends.

2. The Doctor will submit through the Voting System whom he believes he needs to save.

Should the Doctor correctly choose the Mafia's victim, the victim will not be killed and remain in the game.

3. The Sheriff will submit through the Voting System whom he suspects of being Mafia.

The moderator will either confirm or deny whether or not the Sheriff's suspect is indeed Mafia or not. If the Sheriff is right then that Mafia member is jailed and out of the game. If he is wrong then at least the Sheriff knows that that person is not a Mafia member.

The night cycle will not be made public as it is "behind the scenes". At the end of the night cycle, the Morning News will inform all players of arrests, and deaths or attempted murders (if saved by the Doctor) that occurred in the cycle.

Day Cycle

This is where the game gets really interesting and everyone is involved.

Anyone who has died or been arrested should not communicate with the remaining players.

Everyone can discuss in this thread anything about what has happened. People can admit to their characters or even lie about who they are (but be careful or you may get eliminated in the next cycle). You can also accuse and or defend who you like.

Please do not spoil the game by copy and pasting PM or screenshots into this thread. Only talk about your suspicions and accuse with literal evidence or the game could be spoiled for all.

1. All players, including Mafias, Sheriff and Doctor, will be subjected to one vote to eliminate one of the remaining players whom they suspect as being guilty. The player with the most votes will be out of the game.

The member that has been eliminated in the Day Cycle will be announced in the Evening News, and their identity be revealed.

The day and night cycles will continue until the game ends, again, either a) all Mafia have been eliminated and or b) the number of Mafia members and Townspeople are equal (Mafia having control of town votes).

Cycle Times

Night Cycle votes end/Morning News/Town votes begin: 12:00 EST/16:00 UTC

Town votes end/Evening News/Night Cycle votes begin: 00:00 EST/04:00 UTC

    • AI is indeed eliminating jobs, and Oracle just proved it by Hamid Ganji There’s no question that AI has become the hottest trend in workplaces, and every company is trying to adopt AI-driven solutions across its operations. While some industry leaders repeatedly say AI won’t lead to massive layoffs, recent data suggest that AI is actually one of the main reasons some companies are reducing their workforce. According to Oracle’s annual regulatory filing, the company has laid off about 21,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce, amid increasing AI adoption. “The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce,” Oracle said in the filing. The software giant now has approximately 141,000 full-time employees, a notable decrease from 162,000 during the same period last year. Restructuring expenses, including severance payments, cost Oracle $1.84 billion in fiscal 2026. Additionally, around 49,000 Oracle employees were based in the U.S., while approximately 92,000 were employed internationally. Like many other companies, Oracle has fully embraced AI and concentrated much of its efforts on the technology. The company is also a key participant in the United States’ $500 billion Stargate Project, which aims to build multiple AI data centers across the country. When it comes to AI adoption and its impact on the workforce, opinions remain divided. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, whose company has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, recently said in an interview that attributing job cuts to AI is a “lazy” narrative. “The narrative that connects AI to job loss, for many of the CEOs that are doing it – it is just too lazy. AI has just arrived, how is it possible they're already losing jobs?” Huang said. However, statistics and recent reports tell a different story. According to Layoffs.fyi, 196 tech companies have laid off about 119,800 employees so far this year. Reducing staff and replacing roles with AI agents could become one of the most significant trends in the job market in the years ahead.

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
