J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield Questions

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's been mentioned already (since I haven't read through every single post), but it reminds me a bit of the Day of Lavos from Chrono Trigger. Big fire ball on the ground, shooting other fireballs and hurling other debris around.

...but that's what the SNES geek in me sees.

You are not alone, my younger brother said the same thing.

Not sure where that poster above came from (my guess is a photoshop based on the blurred convention photos, or an early draft poster.

Anyway, here's a photo of the official poster, taken by IGN at Comic Con.

Abrams has also said that "Monstrous" is not the name of the movie. He's also said that his goal is for this new monster (and it is a new monster) movie is to give America their own 'Godzilla'. Not that the monster is Godzilla like, but in that it will be America's monster, in the same way Godzilla is Japan's monster.

Well, now! I totally missed that poster. It is official, yes? If so, then I suppose the SoL head from the Trailer could be the real thing. Still, there are a lot of questions. How could that SoL head have been thrown that far and landed on the street so precisely? Why does it look only a tad bigger than the cars next to it? In the trailer, you see an explosion in the distance and then very shortly after, the SoL head comes flying in. Are there two monsters? How can the thing be in two places at once? Maybe it isn't...Damn you, J.J. Abrams! So much awesomeness and yet we get absolutely nothing that tells us what kind of awesomeness it is and where the awesomeness comes from! Oh, and I guess the King Kong idea is out. Abrams insiunated that this is a completely new and original monster. All I can think of is that it either comes from the ocean or is able to travel quickly in water and submerge itself.

I think you are overestimating how big the Statue of Liberty actually is. The ear to ear diameter of the statue is approx 10 feet, which is, yes, about the size of a car.

Don't feel bad though, most people who have never seen the statue in person think its much bigger than it is.

I think most of these words make up the monster that is ravaging NYC: Monstrous, Colossal, and (on IGN) Furious. It gets more and more intriguing.Dunno how Cloverfield or Slusho fits in though...

Slusho is a thing that Abrams has used before. It was a drink in Alias.

Cloverfield is a street near Bad Robot. It is nothing except a code name for the movie. (Like Revolution was the code name for the Wii)

I've been around the area where you can kind of see Liberty Island but I've never actually been on the island itself. I suppose judging the size of the Statue of Liberty from the Spider-Man 2 game isn't a good idea ;)

Some Stuff from AICN...

Right now at the corner of Orchard and Stanton... coming upon it, the whole thing really looked like a genuine accident... except, there were people standing around pretty close, and then I noticed they were holding signs saying "Clovefield ("Cheese")"

Here's pictures from just a few minutes ago... destruction ravaging poor Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. Definitely a challenge setting this up at sunset in this area and there's lots of tension trying to keep the curious back.

Everyone coming up is hitting their phones saying "Oh God... coming up on a horrible accident." It's still not even clear until you get close... just a feeling of dread hanging over things.

"It's some kind of holocaust..." says a restaurant worker nearby, sounding a bit perturbed... "a holocaust movie. It's called 'Today's the Day.'" Uh... no.

The taxi's left blinker is on now... the crew is starting to tell people it will be "dangerous" to stay too close. Shoot is starting....

If you use it, call me... Elsegundo

Evangelion. It just feels like Evangelion.

he spoke about Japan and he "we need our own mosnter"

1- Eva is from Japam (Tokyo-3 ot be exact ;))

2- Evas are not monsters, the Angels maybe... but that just goes back to my 1st point

3- it's been said that it's going to be a movie about something that has never been done (NGE has been done)

I still have my hopes up for a Cthullu movie.

since this is a monster that has not gotten the rcognition he desevers!

- morf

That would be sick.

Totally. I it wouldnt make sense since Evangelion is all about character development and its has been confirmed that this movie its gonna be related from the handycams perspective.

The Evangelion comment was just wishful thinking.

And Cuthulhu has an entire army of fishmen, why attack alone?

  • 3 weeks later...

Some MAJOR spoilers... read if you dare

Expect an old-fashioned monster movie retold in a very modern Blair Witch sort of way - but with a twist. You see that giant monster that emerges from the ocean to begin laying waste to New York City ... it didn't come alone.

Much of the movie will revolve around the characters fleeing for their lives, not from the big one stomping the city, but from the "raptor-like" smaller versions hunting them down.

- All the monsters are carnivores and eat people throughout.

- The smaller monsters grow from scales shed by the big monster.

- There is no back story as such like for "Godzilla" or "The Host", the big one simply emerges and the present script draft has it ultimately vanishing back into the sea.

- Also don't expect much in the way of survivors at the end, literally anyone can be killed at any time, including the leads.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
    • Same, never saw it on Android or iOS. Guess only some people got it *shrugs*
    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
