what would be the best season to start watching doctor who?  series/season ?

I'm going to hit myself for saying this (being a life long DW fan) but i'd also say 2005 series onwards and sneak in some older episodes as you go along. Of course watch the first ever episode and then the well known ones and fill in the gaps as you go along.

Also, make sure to watch the regeneration episodes and even the Paul McGann film as he did make superb Doctor and it's canon.

As a long term Whovian, I would advise going to the films first (the original ones with Peter Cushing as The Doctor, who is never mentioned in a list of the Doctors), then have a look on Netflix (even using the trial ;) ), there are some classic stories on there, including the genesis of the daleks

Netflix.  Find some old Jon Pertwee / Tom Baker episodes.  I would also say that the Sylvester McCoy Doctor was worth watching as well...  It is hard to find the original Hartmann and Troughton episodes.

[edit]

I should note that I've seen them all, all that were available here, anyway.  Even the 5th and 6th Doctors who I did not like as much but I still enjoyed the show.   :)

[2nd Edit]

Should note that the 7th Doctor (McCoy) took him in a new direction, less altruistic.  You should also know that until the reboot this past decade, special effects were non-existent... so if you are a FX nut, you will be less thrilled with the older shows.

Not not an FX fan myself

Apparently this is the script the 12th Doctor read from when auditioning!

THE DOCTOR: Right then, eyesight. Not bad, bit blue. Ears ? not pointy, right way up, more or less level. Face ? well I?ve got one. Oh, no ? French!

CLARA: French.

THE DOCTOR: I?ve deleted French! Plus all cookery skills, and the breast stroke. And hopping. Never mind hopping, who needs to hop. Ohh, the kidneys are interesting. Never had that before ? interesting kidneys.

CLARA: Are you all right?

THE DOCTOR: I don?t know, do I look all right?

CLARA: I don?t know.

THE DOCTOR: How?s the face? Seems all right from the inside. Nice action, responsive. Bit less heft on the chin. How is it?

CLARA: It?s? okay.

THE DOCTOR: Okay?

CLARA: It?s a bit? you know.

THE DOCTOR: No I don?t, I haven?t seen it yet.

CLARA: Maybe it?s just new.

THE DOCTOR: Have you changed height?

CLARA: No.

THE DOCTOR: You sure?

CLARA: It?s you, your height, you?re the one who?s changed.

THE DOCTOR: And look at your nose.

CLARA: What about my nose?

THE DOCTOR: It was really cute, I loved your nose, you should?ve kept it.

CLARA: I did, it?s the same nose, it?s the same all of me. You?re the one who?s? regenerated, whatever you call it.

THE DOCTOR: Are you wearing a smell?

CLARA: Do you mean perfume?

THE DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose it could be perfume.

CLARA: You?ve always liked that perfume, you said so.

THE DOCTOR: No I didn?t, that was the Doctor.

CLARA: You?re the Doctor.

THE DOCTOR: Yes, I suppose I am. That?s going to take a bit of getting used to.

CLARA: Yeah, it really is.

Season 1 -the real season one with An Unearthly Child. I'm not saying the new series isn't real - I love it. Just that I consider it a continuation. To me it's season 27 and so forth.

The movies are fun, but they're not part of the series, since they retell two of Hartnell's adventures (sort of). Cushing played the human scientist Dr. Who, not the alien explorer we call the Doctor.

I recommend the Rifftrax release of Dr. Who and the Daleks - the fun is enhanced by the commentary by the MST3K guys.

Way to the start? I'd have to spend the next couple of years non stop :p

Yes, but it's time well spent.  :D  IIRC it took about 3 years for PBS to go through all of the serials in movie format, usually one story per week.

Peter Capaldi is "almost certainly" the actor set to become the 12th Doctor, according to bookies.

Current Doctor Matt Smith announced his departure from the show in early June.

Metro reports that the Thick of It actor, who has received a surge of bets in recent weeks to be the 12th Doctor, is now the 5/6 favourite among bookies.

Betting on Capaldi has been officially suspended, with British betting agency spokesman Joe Crilly saying: "There is no point putting the market back out because as far as we and our punters are concerned, Peter Capaldi has almost certainly bagged himself the Doctor Who gig, and we will already be paying out more than enough should that be the case."

Other actors who have been named as favourites to take over the iconic role include Ben Whishaw, Ben Daniels, David Harewood and Andrew Scott.

The official reveal of who will be playing the 12th Doctor is set for a live broadcast on BBC One at 7pm on Sunday (August 4).

Maybe we need a bit of an older Dr, he has had a lot to go through lately, maybe he needs it.

I don't know how the younger audience will react to an older guy but I will be happy if its Peter Capaldi - only problem for me is he has already been in the show.

That's the same with Karen Gillan and Freema who had been in the show as different characters before becoming other people...we are meant to forget

I didnt realise Karen was in it before?  We had a mini excuse with Freema and the cousin.

She was a Soothsayer in the same episode!

OMG never realised, always kind of had it in my mind that I knew her when I re-watched that episode but my brain didn't make the connection.

Yeah funnily enough the same episode Peter Capaldi was in :p

    • It's time to say goodbye to Edge and switch back to Firefox. There's no way to disable the ugly rounded corners that appear everywhere. Not even on the page frame. No one uses screens with rounded corners, you idiots.

    • Gen Atlas is the next game from Shadow of the Colossus creator, this time with giant robots by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The mind behind widely well-received games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, Fumito Ueda, showed up at Summer Game Fest today, and that was to reveal his latest project. Being developed by genDESIGN, Gen Atlas is incoming with what looks to be plenty of mech and robot action. Watch the reveal trailer, which makes not much sense, above. The game will have players waking up on an abandoned planet where deserted facilities and grand designs from the original creators remain. Soon, they will stumble upon a colossal robot, from which players gain access to the power to change the world. "Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more," adds the studio. The gameplay snippets seen in the trailer show the player character climbing giant robots (as expected from the creator), while also controlling these titans somehow as well. This is a fully single-player open-world adventure. “The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game,” says Fumito Ueda, CEO and creative director of genDESIGN. “Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.” Before gaining the name Gen Atlas, Ueda first announced this project back in 2024 with the codename Project Robot. Interestingly, this will be a project being funded and published by Epic Games, which should mean that a Steam release is out of the question. Gen Atlas will be releasing on Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. A release date has not been announced just yet.
    • How backwards can you have it? Yes, Linux was gaining because of Linux handhelds and the push for gaming compatibility, but that's not desktop users, it barely converts anyone who owns a SteamDeck, though it helps for those who wanted to do it, but anyways, the AI+RAM debacle helped Linux because people can't easily upgrade their PCs easily and many hate AI so they'd be incentivized to try Linux.
