ABC's hit mystery drama "Lost" which has bounced back in the ratings this winter averaging over 15 million viewers on Thursdays at 9/8c could get as many as 5 extra episodes this spring, in addition to the 8 already produced.

According to a groundbreaking agreement between the network and the producers from 2007, the show was set to end in 2010 after 3 abbreviated seasons of 16 episodes which were all scheduled to run from February through May of each year.

But the writers' strike hampered those plans shutting down the Hawaii-based production after only 8 episodes. The network went ahead with the airplay schedule despite the shutdown with the last of the 8 episodes scheduled for March 20.

According to executive producer Carlton Cuse, the cast and crew will try to make five more episodes. Cuse says writers will "accelerate our storytelling" to get to the end point they had already mapped out for this season.

"It's a little bit like driving cross country to Boston. If the goal is to get there two days earlier, we will have to take more interstates and fewer rural byways," Cuse says to USA Today.

The remaining 3 episodes are then expected to be rolled into the next season.

It is however not yet clear how these episodes will be scheduled. The first concern is whether the first of them would be ready for March 27 to ensure the season progresses uninterrupted.

The second concern is whether the show would remain in the timeslot which belongs to ABC's second highest rated drama "Grey's Anatomy." The medical series is expected to be back with 4-7 new episodes this spring.

There are only 9 Thursdays left till the end of the season beyond March 20. Would "Lost" and "Grey's Anatomy" share the timeslot, with the former getting 5 and the latter just 4 new episodes?

Will "Lost" move to 10:00pm to make way for more than 4 new episodes of "Grey's Anatomy"? Or would ABC even extend the season into June to get all of these episodes on the air in the same timeslot?

Just some of the questions for ABC management to ponder as TV production gets back into high gear.

I think moving Lost, again, would be a dumb move. I'm glad to hear that they're pushing to get more episodes done, but moving Lost to the 10PM timeslot is what hurt it last year. I didn't mind, but a lot of people sure did and it showed in the ratings IIRC. "Gee, let's move it to Tuesdays at 7pm for the last four episodes, then in 2009, let's put it on Mondays at 8PM, and then in 2010, to Fridays at 9PM." You know the show r0x0rz our s0x0rz, so stay consistent!

Agreed. Thursday 9PM ET is a perfect time for Lost to come on and I think ABC risks losing audience if they push it back again. Some people don't like to stay up that late, 10PM I mean, so they need to think about that. Plus moving it again mid-season is never a good idea either.
I wouldnt surprise if a Terminator shows up in here LOL I mean after watching Penny in Sarah Connor, this is competally possible

Because actors/actresses are only allowed to do one thing in their entire careers, am I right?

Because Dominic Monahan was also in Lord of the Rings, that obviously means Gandalf is going to show up on the island.

Why don't you just stop posting here?

Too bad there is no way to block people from posting in a thread. I would put you on ignore, but its pointless because I still see that you posted, just not the content.

ABC is putting together its spring schedule and the first order of business - how to schedule new episodes of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lost" - has already been resolved, with the two blockbuster shows now scheduled to air back to back on Thursdays from 9/8c. Furthermore, the network is expected to stick with such schedule the next season.

The revised Thursday night schedule is:

8:00-9:00 PM UGLY BETTY

9:00-10:00 PM GREY'S ANATOMY

10:00-11:00 PM LOST

Such schedule should make ABC even more competitive than it had been since it successfully moved its hit medical drama from Sunday nights in the fall of 2006.

The network has however struggled to find the best fit out of "Grey's" with "Six Degrees," "Men in Trees," "October Road" and "Big Shots" all airing in the timeslot and failing to meet the high expectations.

This year's former timeslot occupant "Big Shots" was losing over half of "Grey's" audience and is expected to get canceled.

But is the move going to benefit "Lost"? Obviously, the ability of "Grey's Anatomy" to provide "Lost" with enormous lead-in audience is somewhat irrelevant. Loyal "Lost" fans will tune into the show regardless. Plus many of them don't necessarily care about the medical soap.

On the other hand, "Lost" numbers do appear to go down when the show moves to a later timeslot. Being such an exhausting show to follow, it simply works best at an earlier time.

The amateur programmer in me can't help thinking ABC would have been better off starting the night off with "Lost," followed by "Grey's Anatomy" and new episodes od "Private Practice" and moving "Ugly Betty" to Sunday nights before the combo of "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters."

In any event, ABC may interrupt the current run of "Lost" with the March 13 episode (#407). The 8th episode which was originally scheduled for March 20 would actually air in April, kicking off the final batch of 6 episodes (#408-#413).

Aww crap :(

Yeah plus it looks like that will happen next season as well :(

ABC will decide that they haven't done enough with Lost and will move it to Saturday mornings at 4AM because they just love screwing with Lost fans. Then for the 2010 season, they'll mimic the season two schedule, but go a step further: they'll air the episodes on random days of the week and will skip a week or two at a time, just to keep everyone on their toes, even go as far as airing Lost in "Missing Pieces" segments by airing two-four minute clips on random days and times, forcing the online community to record a solid week's worth of TV just to get the pieces and put all them together to get the full 43 minute episode. Yeah, it's getting that dumb.

i know the break was mentioned already....but here's the actual dates:

The last episode of the current pod (episode seven) will air Mar. 13. Then the show will be off the air for six weeks and return Apr. 24 at 9 p.m.

    • I totally disagree. Very little good comes out of governments all around the world manipulating everything they can and usually the people are not the benefactors. What you say about being restricted and expensive sounds almost like the arguments against firearms and why banning them will protect people as if making something illegal somehow will prevent the criminals from having and using them. AI being far less mainstream could simply mean the average person will not benefit, but "big brother" and the corporations will benefit, which is almost for sure NOT a good thing.

    • "connect with audiences" is the most obvious corporate speak you can think of. I only bought Need for Speed from EA because it was the only racing game with cops in existence and I dig that. Now that they killed off NFS franchise, I have nothing to spend money on. EA is officially dead for me, just like Ubisoft which I've been boycotting for some 20 years now...
