what do I need to do IR?

Recommended Posts

I've been wanting to do some infrared photography and I think I'm ready to take the plunge. I just had a question or two.

Is all that's really needed is a simple filter that you attach to the end of your lens? I've seen the 55mm ones on amazon for around $40.

Is there anything else I needed?

afaik all you need is the filter.. i have one for my Canon S3IS as well as a few other filters..

It seems almost too simple, however getting an IR pic to turn out well is all in the settings.. specifically WB.

Also, even though you've seen them on amazon, be very careful, when it comes to lenses and filters, you get what you pay for. Seriously.

would you recommend any specific brands for filters?

Hoya R72. Great filter and pretty inexpensive. IR is tricky. The focus will be different because IR light is different than visible light. The best way to get IR is to have your camera dedicated for IR light. It's expensive and will only shoot in IR so it's not the best way to go unless you are dedicated to IR work.
