Wii are the champions

The point of this article, however, was to suggest that Nintendo's success has come from appealing to wider age ranges than just the hardcore gamers (who also tend to be mostly male). That means mind puzzles for Grandma and kiddie games for the little ones.

And I'm all for it :) Just don't neglect the other age groups in the process, which imo they have been doing (N)

The Wii has amazing games. Granted there has been some delay on some of the "I NEED THESE" titles, but there are many games that are enjoyable to a decently varied audience.

A short list:

- Super Swing Golf - Difficult, enjoyable

- Zelda - yes it's a hacked GCN game, but it is still fun

- Mario - brilliant, amazing, amazing, amazing

- Zack and Wiki - This game is so much fun. Sleeper hit of the year.

- Metroid - A nice return to quality in the series after somewhat of a slump in MP2: Echoes

- Wii Sports - Free, very fun for non gamers, very easy to learn, nice tech demo.

- Virtual Console - Um... Do I really have to explain how great this is? XBox Live has amazing titles, but they will never have most of these.

The Wii is Nintendo's testament to focusing on fun in gaming, as they always have. I keep wanting to get an Xbox360, but then remember I'm already busy playing Wii all the time, and don't have time for another console. I've had it since launch and I'm not bored at all with it.

The only thing worth having on that list is Mario. Zelda was a direct port the GameCube so really that wasn't a new game at all consider it was delayed for the Wii.

Super Swing Golf, Zack and Wiki, Metriod Prime 3 and Wii Sports are all very average games at best. Hell WiiSports isn't really a game.

These games are fine for the age group stated and casual but what about the hardcore owners??

Sorry I meant to say multiplatform games :p

Let's put it this way, Zelda (even though it's a port to begin with) Metroid Prime 3 and Mario are the only worth while games owning. Which is a bad situation to be in after a year, no matter what the excuse is. You can say the 360 had a bad lineup at launch or whatever, but it had more than 3 must have games in it's first year, that's for damn sure

I fully agree. Even Metriod Prime 3 is average at best. Mario is about the only thing worth owning. I really do hope the games get much better next year for Nintendo's sake.

is the main reason I might get a wii, my g/f loves it and wont play anything else.

But the Wii was outsold last month in U.S and canada by the xbox 360

Wow, 1 month out of 12? You guys must be thrilled.

How the hell does MSFT have nothing interesting? You may not like the titles on 360, but there is some fantastic ones to choose from. Just like I'm not fussed over Ratchet or Uncharted, but they are still great games and will be very important titles for the PS3 this xmas.

And many people obviously think that the current games for Wii are great.

Yes Fred the range is wider, but they are also leaving the core 13-29 age group out in the cold. They have forgotten all about hardcore gamers almost.

Like when Sony and MS were neglecting the non-hardcore crowd, and everyone called Nintendo 'kiddie'?

The group isn't out in the cold, they're just too damned picky.

you know its weird people keep saying that the wii doesnt have games for it yet I find that I dont have enough money to buy all thje games that are coming out for it...here is just a quick list of the games that interest me:

Deweys adventure

Dragon Blade

M&S at the Olympics

SMG of course

Zack and Wiki

Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

Medal of Honor Heroes 2

and that is just a few of them that I can think of off the top of my head...maybe I am not considered a "hardcore" gamer I dont know but I find that it has plenty of games.

And many people obviously think that the current games for Wii are great.

Who knows for sure. We had figures last week or the week before and the Wii had the lowest software attach rate of the 3 consoles. For all we know 8x% of buyers are all stuck playing WiiSports the majority of the time.

I never said MSFT and Sony are doing a good job of appealing to younger/older audiences. They are severly lacking in the same way Nintendo are for hardcore gamers. No question about it. And it's nothing to do with consumers being picky at all, if games aren't appealing to the market, that's not our fault :s Apart from Zelda I can't think of any hardcore gamers available for the Wii.

I could at least name 3 casual games for both the 360 and PS3 (and not even taking PSN/Arcade titles into the equation).

Let's put it this way, Zelda (even though it's a port to begin with) Metroid Prime 3 and Mario are the only worth while games owning.

Why? And who has the authority to claim such a thing. Zach & Wiki is every bit as good as the big three you mentioned. Super Swing Golf isn't quite that good but it suffers from standard launch game issues, such as lacking some features like online.

This comment i believed in since it lauched and my views hasn't changed even after a year. Would it be wrong to actually say maybe over 50% of people brought it for that one game alone and nothing else. If you really think they didn't then why was there a report stating people have stopped using their Wii's and it was a quite high number at that. Clearly WiiSports doesn't keep people busy for a year, hell not even 2 days for many.

Ok and microsoft will release Mass effect soon, let's see who's the christmas champ

I really hope that is true. Mircosoft do derserve to be top this Christmas with great games that it has, plus the great Live service and also XBLA. I wouldn't normally compare but the Wii has very little to go against that, not even the games.

I am going to get flamed for this but that the hell....

Nintendo have been holding back stock to create hype. Do you seriously think they could and should have a stock stortage even after a year? I don't think so. They have had plenty of time to get things straight yet they fail to do anything about it.

Please Nintendo fans, don't cry and defend that there is a reason for the lack of Wii's in stores. Anyone with half a brain will realise what is actually happening here.

Exactly. Zack and Wiki is one of the best games I've played in a long time. It is challenging (no Oracle / no revive is the way to play), frustrating, and makes you think a LOT. I'd certainly not call it a childs game.

Super Swing is fantastic single player. fantastic. My friend and I cannot wait for season 2 coming out this december. It would be nice with online play, but really, it doesn't have to for it to be a great title.

There is much more than just Mario and Zelda. Don't assume things about games that you haven't played, you'll miss out on a lot of fun.

One more game that I forgot to mention: Koronipa. It doesn't carry enough weight to be a full "title" but it is pretty challenging, gives you quite a bit of gameplay and came into the market at the nice $39.99 price point.

There is a lot more going for the Wii that it may seem from a first glance, and if you look at other consoles there are not that many amazing games 1 year after launch and certainly very very few with the replay value of many of the Wii games. Super Swing Golf alone has given us 50+ hours of gameplay. Just try unlocking all the characters, let alone finishing all the different story modes for single player. SSG is a LONG game.

About Mario. The game is amazing. I am only 51 stars in and I am loving it. Loving it. It is worth buying the system just for that game in my opinion. I have been waiting for a sequel to Mario 64 for a long time and now it is here. The normal stars are a bit easy to obtain sometimes, but a lot of the comet challenges are pretty darn fun.

One final note. After Feb 10th, nothing matters anymore as Smash comes out, and all other games fade into the glimmering distance.

They've sold more than MS or Sony, and you think they need to create hype? Whatever for? It makes no business sense at all.

Fact of the matter is, the better games for me are on the 360. Barely anything interests me on the Wii.

EXCEPT, the fact that I want one for party games.

What is good for the 360 that is so overly compelling? Halo makes me cry (Marathon for life!) and while there are some good games for 360 I haven't seen a title yet that says "BUY THE SYSTEM BECAUSE OF ME!"

360 and PS3 games have so far (at least for me) suffered in gameplay, story and control schema at the cost of pretty graphics (too realistic without being realistic enough usually). So far everything but the Wii leaves me underwhelmed.

^ why does the 360 have the highest attach rate for software then? And don't say because it's been out longer, people aren't going to waste money and buy games they don't really want. More to the point, you don't like the titles on the 360 but plenty of others do. The Wii is severely lacking in quality titles (not to say it doesn't have good games at all). It has far too many ports with tacked on controls from last gen, and if not that, then it's DS ports remade on the Wii.

Shipping over a million units a month isn't holding back. Seriously what other console can claim 400,000+ sales numbers for 3 months in a row during the summer season.

It's not on store shelves because they instantly sell out, not because Nintendo only sends a handful out to create any illusion.

Do you work in McD? Anyone with a basic knowledge of sales will realise how stupid that sounds.

The hype is there. It's been there for a year.

To understand why this happens you need to see it from the casuals PoV. My parents and a mate at work bought it as a social thing. If they can be arsed to play on it they are happy with: Sports, Play and Big Brain Academy. They don't want to, nor have the time to, run out and buy every AAAA++++!1!!oen title that comes out.

On the other hand the 360 has the 'hardcore' type whos main hobby is playing on the console. Thus complete games at an alarming rate and run through them like Ethiopian village in a 5* restaurant.
