It wasn't what you would call a hot party. Sure, there was sizzlin' music, plenty of drinks and stars like Nick Lachey and Ryan Seacrest in attendance, but with temperatures dipping into the 30s Friday night, many partygoers at Maxim's mostly outdoor Super Bowl soiree at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess huddled around heat lamps and fire pits.

And getting into one of the Super Bowl's most exclusive events was like going on a ride at a theme park: lots of lines, lots of patience.

Non-chauffeured guests were required to park in a carnival-like lot next to the resort, trek to a large white tent in another parking lot, enter a line where employees guarded the guest list, get a wristband, haul up to the hotel itself and then have the wristband verified with a flashlight by a security guard at the entrance.

Once inside, attendees sipped cocktails made with Patron Tequila, drank Heineken beer, mingled with scantily clad models posing in Perry Ellis garments and watched go-go dancers gyrate next to DJs on two outdoor stages. Later, surprise musical guests Akon and T-Pain performed.

"It's too packed," said Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar Chuck Liddell. "I like dive bars."

Partygoers were bottlenecked at the two entrances to the Stone Rose Lounge, nightclub mogul Rande Gerber's lush bar overlooking the pool. Guards ushered people away from the event's only indoor space.

Even celebrities like brothers Jerry and Charlie O'Connell had trouble gaining access.

"I came in with that guy, my father," said Jerry O'Connell, pointing at his dad standing on the other side of the lounge's glass exterior. "He's a VIP ? and I'm out here," he said jokingly of his non-celebrity father.

Other stars at the Maxim party included Tom Petty, Sean "Diddy" Combs, John Elway, Larry David, Rob Schneider, Kim Kardarshian, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from "The Hills," former "Dancing with the Stars" contestants Stacy Kiebler, Ian Ziering and Mario Lopez, and cast members from "Entourage."

INSIDE THE RINGS WITH TROY AIKMAN (1-1:30 p.m. ET)

"Inside the Rings" with NFL on FOX lead game analyst Troy Aikman is a close up look at select quarterbacks and their personal journeys to Super Bowl victory. Each one took a road less traveled and we hear their story straight from them. Aikman and FOX Sports reporter Chris Myers host. Among the quarterbacks featured are John Elway, Kurt Warner and Doug Williams. The show is produced by Barry Landis and Bill Richards.

HOWIE LONG'S TOUGH GUYS "SUPER BOWL EDITION" PRESENTED BY CHEVY (1:30-2 p.m. ET)

FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Howie Long pays tribute to the NFL's roughest and toughest with a little help from "tough guy ambassadors" of the past in this 30 minute presentation. Old meets new as legendary tough guys like quarterback Jim Kelly, tight end Mark Bavaro and others interview and comment on current players who show the grit and determination that make them special. The show is hosted by Long, who at the end reveals this year's "ultimate" tough-guy. The show is produced by P.T. Navarro.

The Super Bowl itself (After 6:17pm) will just be another Football game. Not much to it, Giants and Pats played against each other before in the regular season, so it really isn't that crazy. Giants will probably lose, however I hope the Giants actually Triumph. Tired to see Pats win another one!

But what REALLY makes Super Bowl, actually Big deal is Exactly everything around it! The Hype, entertainment, ads, Pre-game coverage. And Parties, etc...I am certainly more attracted to these more!

But, I am just saying, I think what makes Super Bowl actually a BIG deals always every year is exactly EVERYTHING around it, Not the game itself.

Take away all these Parties, entertainment, Ads, Trailers, performances I would say not many would care for it other than your average football fans!

It's nothing but a marketing frenzy with a side of football.

I don't like the Football but the trailers are awesome especially if they hype a movie more then I already like :D

Super Bowl XLII: Most Commercials Likely to Air in HD

While Fox Sports has exclusive telecast rights this Sunday to Super Bowl XLII, an executive at ESPN is predicting that as much as 80 percent of the several dozen commercials aired during the pre-game, game and post-game shows will be aired in HD, even though a majority of American TV sets have not yet jumped up 1080i or 720p. (Both Fox and ESPN use 720p as their preferred transmission standard).

Bryan Burns, ESPN vice president for strategic planning & development, recently cited some industry research indicating that ads produced and aired in HD have up to three times the brand recognition of traditional SD spots. Perhaps more startling, according to published reports, was his statement that ESPN?s audience among cable viewers in the Los Angeles market (DMA no. 2) is more than 20 percent higher in HD homes than in SD dwellings. (Burns was featured in HD Notebook?s weekly Q&A discussing other HD issues Jan 23, 2008.)

HD ads, Burns said, also grows intent-to-buy by up to 55 percent. While nearly 60 percent of ads on ESPN?s Monday Night Football currently air in HD, Burns guesstimates that four out of five Super Bowl spots on Sunday will be featured in HD. Fox, for its part, did not respond to inquiries in recent days about the technical or monetary specifics of Super Bowl XLII commercials (although it had confirmed published reports that it will not sell ad time to any of the presidential candidates, which would have afforded the hopefuls the largest TV audience of the long campaign).

According to the Consumer Electronic Association, more than half (57 percent) of HD owners said they will go online after Sunday?s game to, among other things, re-watch the more memorable teSuper Bowl XLII in HDTV plans to begin compiling HD sports ratings (and other HD fare) in some major markets by the summer.

Behind Fox's Super Bowl Game Plan

Production team will utilize high-definition gear by the truckload

As Fox's production team prepares for its broadcast of Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3 from Glendale, Ariz., the biggest improvement it is expecting compared to its coverage of the NFC Championship game is the weather.

?It should be about 106 degrees warmer,? jokes Jerry Steinberg, senior VP of operations for Fox Sports, referring to the subzero temperatures that Fox faced at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., on Jan. 20, when the New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers for the NFC title.

Otherwise, Fox is following much the same playbook it used for the NFC title game, including the same high-definition mobile production unit, Game Creek Video's FX HD, which it has relied on for ?A-Game? coverage throughout the 2007 NFL season.

Fox will use more cameras for the Super Bowl?perhaps 30 compared to the 24 used in Green Bay?deploy roughly 80 microphones and add Game Creek's Patriot mobile unit to support the pre-game show. (Pat Sullivan, president of Hudson, N.H.-based Game Creek, was the football team's general manager from 1982-1990, but the name is unrelated.)

The network will use some new ultra-high-frame-rate cameras for replays. But basically it will keep the same graphics package it normally employs on Sundays and isn't planning any ?trick? point-of-view cameras to offer new angles.

?We'll add a few more cameras and some more replay sources, and we'll add a truck for the red-carpet show,? says Steinberg, who has managed Fox's live sports operations since 1994, and plays down the awesome display of television gear the Super Bowl now routinely employs. ?For the most part,? he says, ?it's just longer days and more rehearsing.?

The Super Bowl venue, the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, is a familiar venue to Fox as the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and the site of college football's Fiesta Bowl BCS game. The stadium, which opened in August 2006, is an easy site to work at from a mobile production standpoint, says Steinberg, as it is already cabled with the fiber-optic paths suitable for high-definition production.

HEATED BLANKETS FOR CAMERAS

In Green Bay, it was a far different story. Fox kept the cable it had to run off the ground to prevent it from freezing to the frozen tundra. The frigid conditions at Lambeau also prompted Fox to keep its cameras on through the weekend after the initial Friday setup. That prevented them from freezing. Fox took the extra step of wrapping the cameras in heated blankets.

Game Creek's Sullivan says his technicians came up with the idea of heated blankets for FX HD's Sony cameras, which have a minimum operating temperature of minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit. They had a right to be concerned: On Saturday morning, the temperature in Green Bay was -9.

?For a good chunk of the pre-production, it was well below zero,? says Sullivan, who, from his days with the Patriots, is no stranger to cold weather. ?Luckily, it warmed up to a balmy negative 1 [degree] for the game.?

FX HD, the technical foundation of Fox's production, was designed and built to Fox's specifications by Game Creek and launched in August 2006 to support Fox's NFL and NASCAR coverage. Indeed, after the Super Bowl concludes in Arizona, FX HD?along with many of the same personnel?will head immediately to Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., for Fox's coverage of the Budweiser Shootout race on Feb. 9.

?Because this package is a 40-week deal for racing and football, the producers and technicians live in this for 40 weeks a year,? says Steinberg. ?So we had tremendous input in the design in terms of ergonomics and where we want what.?

FX HD, which has also been used by Fox to produce last year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game and by ABC/ESPN for its coverage of the NBA finals, is not one truck. Instead, it consists of five discrete 53-foot mobile trailers (three ?Expando? trucks that can widen out on the sides and two conventional trucks) that are interconnected with fiber-optic cables.

FAST AND EASY

?There is full fiber connectivity between the trucks, so the setup time is really fairly quick,? says Sullivan. ?All the video, audio, monitoring, intercom and data [links] are carried truck to truck by eight strands of fiber, as opposed to doing it with coax, which would mean hooking up to 400 separate BNC connections between the trucks. That's the new technology we've brought to the party. That allows our guys, when we arrive in Phoenix on Friday to park the truck, to take 15 minutes to connect the trucks as opposed to three or four hours.?

The centerpiece of FX HD is the A-unit, a 53-foot Expando that handles engineering, video, replay and audio functions. Key gear includes a 512 x 1024 Pesa video router; 30 Fortel UDC-550 Up/Cross Converter/Framesync devices; Sony HDC-3300 super-slow-motion and HDC-1500 cameras with Canon lenses; EVS replay servers; Panasonic DVC Pro HD and D-5 HD tape decks; a Calrec Bluefin Alpha audio console with 96 faders; and a host of Dolby digital audio encoding and decoding gear.

The B-unit, another expanding truck, performs production, graphics and tape release functions. It includes a Thomson Grass Valley 90-input, 4 M/E (mix/effects) Kalypso switcher; a Chyron HD-Hyper X graphics system; a Grass Valley 40-input, 3 M/E Kayak HD switcher; and three massive monitoring walls.

The C-unit is a conventional truck that handles editing, maintenance and storage functions, and includes two Apple Final Cut Pro edit rooms. The FX HD D-unit is a straight truck for fiber transmission and audio functions and is outfitted with Otari fiber distribution equipment, a Calrec Sigma Audio Console with 64 faders and a Yamaha ML-7 audio console with 48 faders. The final piece of FX HD, the E-unit, is a 53-foot double Expando unit that serves as a mobile studio (it was dubbed the ?Hollywood Hotel? for NASCAR coverage).

Game Creek's Patriot mobile unit, which is handling Fox's red-carpet pre-game show with host Ryan Seacrest, consists of a 53-foot HD Expando production unit and a 53-foot support unit. Key equipment includes a Grass Valley Kalypso switcher and GVeous digital video effects system; a mix of Fortel and Evertz frame synchronizers and upconversion gear; a Pesa 128 x 128 broadband router; an NVision 512 x 512 audio router; Sony HDC-1500 cameras with Canon lenses and Vinten tripods; EVS replay servers; Chyron Duet graphics systems; a Calrec Alpha audio board; and an RTS Adam intercom system.

While CBS kept wireless camera links to a minimum for its Super Bowl production last year because of interference concerns, Fox will use a bevy of wireless HD cameras for both the game coverage and the pre-game show. That's indicative of the progress made in recent years in adapting RF (radio frequency) transmission technology to the high bandwidth of HD signals.

Though maintaining successful RF links can sometimes be ?80% technology and 20% voodoo,? according to Steinberg, he's now comfortable using the technology with portable HD cameras.

?That's another production tool we've gotten back that we didn't have in the beginning of the transition from SD to HD,? says Steinberg. ?Now it's pretty standard.?

Wireless links are just one of the many pieces of HD production technology that have become commonplace as Fox wraps up its fourth season of producing the NFL Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show in HDTV?Because we do everything in HD, it's just TV,? says Steinberg. ?It's no longer a science project?it's just doing TV with better sound and more pixels.?

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS, one of America's greatest rock and roll bands, will perform in the BRIDGESTONE SUPER BOWL XLII HALFTIME SHOW on FOX at University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 3, the NFL announced today during the FOX NFL SUNDAY pregame show.

The halftime show is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year. Nearly 140 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year's show.

The BRIDGESTONE SUPER BOWL XLII HALFTIME SHOW is an NFL NETWORK PRODUCTION and will be executive produced and directed by WHITE CHERRY ENTERTAINMENT and DON MISCHER PRODUCTIONS. This same team produced the NFL Opening Kickoff 2007 special from Indianapolis. In addition to the halftime show, they also will produce the Super Bowl XLII pregame show. Don Mischer Productions will serve as executive producer and director, while White Cherry Entertainment, led by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, will serve as executive producers.

The NFL has worked the past four years with both Don Mischer Productions and White Cherry Entertainment on Opening Kickoff and Super Bowl shows. Last year's Super Bowl XLI Halftime Show starring Prince earned the producers two Emmy nominations.

    • Apple raises MacBook and iPad prices as memory costs surge by Karthik Mudaliar Apple has raised the U.S. prices of several MacBook and iPad models, including the MacBook Neo, which it launched for $599 less than four months ago. The company’s cheapest laptop now starts at $699, while some MacBook Pro configurations have increased by $300. The changes affect the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Pro. Apple has not changed the hardware or storage included with these models, so customers are simply paying more for the same configurations. The MacBook Neo increase will probably attract the most attention. Apple introduced the laptop in March for $599, pitching it as a more affordable Mac for students and buyers considering Windows laptops or Chromebooks. It uses an A18 Pro processor and originally undercut Dell’s new $699 XPS 13 by $100. Following the increase, the two laptops now have the same starting price. The M5 MacBook Air has also lost the price Apple promoted when it launched in March. The 13-inch model arrived with 512GB of storage for $1,099, while Apple’s store now lists the MacBook Air range as starting at $1,299. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 chip and 1TB of storage has gone from $1,699 to $1,999. Apple has made similar changes to its iPads. Tim Cook had already warned that price increases were coming. Cook said Apple’s existing component inventory had softened the immediate impact, but that higher memory costs would increasingly affect the company after the June quarter. Much of the pressure comes from the construction of AI data centers. Memory manufacturers are directing more production toward high-margin server products, leaving PC, tablet, and smartphone makers competing for the remaining supply. Apple has not said whether the new prices are temporary or whether further increases are planned.
