Vista SP1 'on schedule' for March RTM

Recommended Posts

With a major launch event next month serving as an unmovable anchor for Microsoft at this point, the ancillary launches for Vista Service Pack 1 and XP SP3 would probably raise suspicion if they were delayed.

A group of 15,000 private beta testers received what's being called "RC Refresh 2" of the release candidate for Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Microsoft confirmed to BetaNews this morning. Numbers for the actual release candidate or the beta number, judging from Microsoft's recent correspondence with us, are no longer being used, which could lead some to believe that this may not be the final "refresh" coming down the pike.

I really doubt that the release will be delayed till March.

From the progress I'm seeing and since all the 'evaluation...' blurbs and the time bomb being removed from Vista SP1 Refresh 2. I would guess the release of Vista SP1 is imminent and not at all a month or more away.

I dont think it will take six years, it's only a Service Pack, Microsoft want to make sure it doesn't make things worse, but things are better, much better, it's gonna shut the Vista bashers up, no doubt

I've testing it and there a vast inprovements in performance.

Applications load faster, boot and shut down times are increased so there no waiting for lenghty periods of time.

If your able to test it, have a go, if not then you'll have to wait until the release.

I've seen better application compatibility / marginally better performance and an improved experience.

I think that Vista SP1 is not as ambitious as it could have been, but it's a solid release.

If it fixed boot times to be on par with XP and copying files (bug) time fixed then i will switch.

On my C2D 2.4 GHz with 4GB DDR and WD SATAII I have always had faster boot times with Vista than with Windows XP. Go figure.

Still, is it better than the Vista RTM? More importantly, though, is it as good as/better than Windows XP?

Yes Vista SP1 is a vast improvement over Vista RTM.

For me Vista RTM was just a little short of being better than Windows XP (mostly due to poor drivers) but as of Vista SP1, IMHO, is clearly a better operating system.

Because Microsoft reset development of Windows Vista it caused them to be behind in a major way and they had no time to mak it as good as it should have been.

Had they not reset development then Windows Vista would have shipped on time and included everything planned for it.

had it been released when originally planned then we would be looking at the successor being released about this time now.

But i think Windows Vista is a worthy successor to Windows XP and worth the upgrade.

I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate (genuine) since 2006 and sure there have been issues ie lack of drivers, application compatibility, reliability and performance but some of that isn't purely down to Microsoft.

If you think about it third party software creators like Cyberlink, Norton to name a few have had plenty of time to make sure their applications were fully compatible and drivers were available at launch.

But instead of boycotting them we're blaming Microsoft for all of the problems just because we use software and devices on the platform.

We all know that Windows Vista has had issues but tell me are the really that bad?

The boot times depend machine-to-machine. On mine, XP and Vista boot in the same amount of time. Also, the file copy bug was fixed in a patch MS released a little while ago. It works, too.

SP1 won't be a big deal and it won't convince business users to switch to it from a perfectly good XP install base. Just like the Office 2007 SP1 didn't really do much to improve Office 2007. The Service Pack will be a 65 meg download for anybody who already has an updated RTM not a big deal.

Sigh...business may switch when they need more memory and Vista 64 will start looking neccessary then.

I've had this installation of Vista installed for 8 months and it's the first time I haven't felt the need to reformat the computer when a new SP comes out.

Vista still feels as quick today as it did 8 months ago. I also have no problem installing betas of the service packs and even un-installing them in order to install a new beta!

yeah, one thing i have noticed is that the speed of boot and the os generally doesn't seem to be degrading over time like it did in xp.

Yeah I have noticed this too, vista still boots in like 30-40 seconds and I haven't noticed any performance degradation like I would with XP.

Sigh... it hasn't RTM'd yet. So unless you have a bit torrent from the future, it has not.
ohh trust me it has!

I won't say anything about my sources, but:

Except Brandon works for Microsoft, and you do not. There are many out there claiming that since the RC Refresh 2 contains no significant bugs, and removes the evaluation copy watermark it MUST be RTM. The reality, however, is that until Microsoft marks a build as RTM (which, Brandon has said they haven't yet) it ISN'T released to manufacturing and a done deal.
