So in the next week or so I my tax refund will show up in my bank account and for the most part, it's already spent. I've decided to move into the world of DSLR and I have a question Nikon hardware.

Think I've got it narrowed down to the D80 and I've found a decent package, at least it seems decent too me...

http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/SLR1169.htm

But I'm curious about addtional lenses. I've read that Nikon lenses are a bit harder to find, which I'm ok with, but I'm wondering about exactly how hard to come by they are? I'm ok with buying through the internet, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a site or two (other than the one I have listed above,) where I may be able to find decent deals, I'd be greatful. Thanks!

Edit:

Also, if anyone knows of a similar kit for a better price, I'm open to suggestions.

It's your standard kit. What type of shooting are you planning on and what's your budget? ($1200?)

Heh, my budget was somewhere around the D40x Kit mark, but opted to move up to the D80 instead. As far as shooting goes, I'd say I'm the guy that brings the camera to the family functions to see if there is anything to shoot on the way there or the way home. Right now I'm doing landscape and architecture shots, but I plan on moving on to other things as well.

Canon also just released the new Rebel XSi, its a great intro-level dSLR. Nikons' are great too.

Looked into the Canon, used my aunt's last year for a few shots and it just didn't feel right in my hands. Opted for a Nikon, decided on that a few months back, but couldn't swing anything until my taxes come in. The input was certainly appreciated, but at this point the decision for the Nikon system had been made. Thanks though!

Nikon lens' arent hard to find. Just go to a bigger camera store and they'll have a lot for you to choose from or can order you one in from nikon or their supplier.

A must have lens is the Nikon 50mm f1.8. I paid i think $185 for mine and its one of the best lens' that I own. Best bang for your buck. Another good cheap lens to look at is the Tamron 70-300 tele-macro lens. That was $285 when I bought it and it offers a solid zoom range and the macro mode is pretty good too.

Thats WAY overpriced.

You probably tried out the rebel series from Canon. Look at the 30D. Much better then the D80 (ISO, FPS etc) for the same price

30D body - $800

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4237...tal_Camera.html

Buy a 18-55 used (about $75, or $100 new - I'll have mine up for sale in a few weeks)

and a 50mm F/1.8 MKII (about $60-70)

and a Sigma 70-300 $130

http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-70-300mm-4-5-6...9501&sr=8-2

If you do decide to go Nikon, I do have a D50 body for sale for $355 shipped. Its a great way to get started in to DSLRs

Brandon,

The Canon I used was a 20D, I know it's an older model, but it was still a decent piece of hardware. Fact is, I'll never say anything bad against Canon hardware, it just didn't feel right in my hands. Haven't really looked at them since, though I'm willing to take another look at them though.

goodcase,

Thanks for bringing up the Tamron hardware, I've been trying to do a bit of research on them, but haven't found many personal reviews on them. Nice to know you've had some decent luck with it.

And thats why retailers stay in business and continue to rip people off. I Just abuse the retailer (wolf camera) here by testing the stuff and buying it online.

If you are that anxious, get overnight shipping. Still cheaper and no taxes to pay!

    • OpenAI is making Codex more useful in Chrome and the cloud by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI's Codex now has more than 5 million users, up nearly 4x from earlier this year. To further accelerate Codex's growth among developers, OpenAI today announced that it has agreed to acquire Ona, a company that builds secure cloud execution and orchestration technology for developers. Ona will enable developers to run Codex with persistent and controlled cloud infrastructure for long-running agentic workflows. Right now, most Codex execution happens locally on developers' laptops and PCs, and the agents work continuously for hours. Through Ona, OpenAI aims to make Codex agents keep working for days without being tied to a user’s local machine or an active session. This will be an important capability for enterprises that want to deploy AI agents in production while maintaining control over infrastructure, data, security boundaries, credential scope, logging, and review workflows. Like any acquisition, the deal is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the deal closes, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as separate companies. After closing, Ona’s team will join the Codex team to improve developer workflows. Alongside the Ona acquisition announcement, OpenAI today introduced a few Codex updates. Developers can now save Codex rate limit resets and use them later instead of losing them when they are not needed immediately. OpenAI is also adding a referral option where users can invite a friend to Codex and get a saved rate limit reset. OpenAI today also announced a developer mode for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. With this mode, Codex can use the Chrome DevTools Protocol to debug web apps, inspect pages, and work more directly with browser-based development workflows. Developers can use this when they want Codex to profile JavaScript, inspect console output and network traffic, examine web page states including the DOM and applied styles, and more.
