Macs are great but the lack of user base and support for lots of software and hardware is keeping them down. Personaly Id love to see apple create some type of standerd for their OSs, giving them a little more support for other hardware - much like intel Viiv (I think thats what it is) where they certify certain pieces of hardware to work with their OSs. As well as cases of course - but they would loose the whole mac thing of looking high quality.

Sorry bak on to topic - Id love to see a much better explorer in windows 7, I dont know if anyone has used the longhorn explorer but I think its much better then the one in vista. Also Id love to see it a lot less bloated - choice of services and apps on install would help with this a lot (maybe we could choose to not install things like security center, windows defender, other things like that which you dont need if you use 3rd party apps).

Sweet but with 3 years of development, I doubt it that they going to develop a totally brand new OS. It will be probably another Vista enhanced with new tools.

WinFS is gone, guys.... get over it. just be good little lads and ask for a new file system. If things were going badly enough for MS to scrap the entire project, and not just postpone it, then u probably wouldn't want to use it ;-)

I'd really like to see:

  • Wallpaper changer (I currently use Wallpaper Master, but I'd like to see something similar built-in)
  • Stop rearranging folders by what it thinks is best. This is annoying, especially in My Music, where it keeps rearranging most of the album folders into regular music folders.
  • An OS is meant to be secure, right? So how about bundling Windows Defender and Windows Live OneCare in Windows 7? That would increase the sales!
  • Bundle Office into Windows 7 (or at least a minimal version)
  • Include better games. You can only enjoy Minesweeper for so long. :D
  • Keep all the Vista features, but give it performance like XP, or better.
  • Automatic defragmentation tool.
  • The ability to use custom themes right out of the box, without having to download a modified uxtheme.dll.

While I agree with some of these points, like custom themes, not rearranging folders and wallpaper changes most of your points are the reason I refuse to like or use Vista, it's too bloated!

Low price PCs can't run it, if you bundle more stuff in it you just fill it with crap that no one wants.

For example, windows media player, if you use another media player, you're stuck with wmp on there in the background. same if you use a different browser to internet explorer or a different antispyware to windows defender (you say you want that bundled as well, not sure if it already is in Vista or not).

Windows 7 should be an operating system, nothing else, for sure during the setup, features such as IE, WMP, WD, messenger, movie maker, onecare, security center, paint, notepad, games etc etc should be offered but not compulsary as part of the OS!

I agree COMPLETELY with the x64 only kernel. I mean why stay behind in core technologies??? just because 90% of people still use it??? be a innovator MS and release 64 bit only OS, people will follow, people will thank you

Well I agree with you all,Microsoft should ask users wht to add or remove,more costomizable explorer like for eg. KDE 4 suport for .png for icons and much more ..more 3d effects and eye candy witch wont use a lot RAM and CPU like Aero for some few 3d effects and transparency (LOL) and ETC.

I'm looking for a "Pare Down" install, something that will let me script or otherwise rip down the sheer amount of crap that gets shoveled into your basic windows install.

you know, tear out the games, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Messenger, System Restore etc etc...

I don't care if you stuff that beast to the gills with bloat, but for crying out loud, if you do, give us a way to pare down what we install!

Respect your Power users, I can say I'm personally responsible for at least 40+ people NOT buying Vista because as a power user, people seek out and respect my opinion of things.

But Vista already does, I run it smooth on 1.5Gb!

I think Windows 7 needs to be 64-bit only (which sadly it won't be), the abilty to fully remove included software (IE, WMP etc) I don't mind the software been there if I use it, but it would be nice to have the option to remove it completely! (not just remove the icons). It needs to have resolved the issues Vista had (slow file copying, UAC (fix not remove) etc).

Minus the 64-bit one (as it's not gonna happen) the other things need to be met for me to considering going to Windows 7 when it releases.

I want Windows to run as well as it does on a clean install at all times. I want uninstalling a program to give me the option to remove absolutely every trace of it, as if it was never there. I want to be able to move installed applications wherever I want by simply moving the folder. I want them to get rid of the registry / AppData and keep settings files in the SAME folder as the application - the registry gets bogged down and simply grinds computers to a halt. Oh, and it would be nice if it didn't operate like a panda carrying a mountain - honestly, Vista is great feature-wise but performance is definitely lacking.

I'm currently preparing for a format at the moment because Vista decided to collapse. It constantly forgets folder settings, it cannot perform even basic tasks without grinding to a halt (even the mouse stops responding) and best of all it couldn't even handle running a video - part way through the video died, the audio continued and the mouse and keyboard decided not to function. This is absolutely ridiculous behaviour for a modern operating system. Nothing should be able to stop Explorer responding and Windows processes should always have absolute priority over running applications - how can I end a process if the mouse doesn't work or Task Manager is so slow that it takes over 5 minutes to close a program?

None of the behavior you described should be attributed to the operating system. That is quite simply not how the operating system behaves. Either you have faulty hardware, or faulty / incompatible software that is causing you those sort of problems.

It seems that Windos has quite a lot of compatibility problems with software. Like few days ago when I had to boot boot because csrss.exe was scorching my CPU so badly I couldn't do anything.

Maybe M$ could release a list of compatible software? ;)

Funny enough, all operating systems have quite a lot of compatibility problems, but to suggest MS is at the top of the list is ridiculous.

If you want a list of compatible software for any current operating system, be prepared for a list tens of thousands of items long. Seems like a fairly pointless effort for compile such a list, as it'd change literally by the hour.

I'd likely buy Windows 7 anyways but I'd like to see 64bit only and moving away from the registry. Sure still have the registry there for compatibility but have programs start to use a new system.

We all knows Windows 7 will be both 32bit and 64bit, so I really hope that the 64bit disc is the one that is shipped and to get the 32bit one it's a request. Much like how some versions of Vista come with 32bit and you have to request for your 64bit discs.
