It may not be worth 54 million dollars, but BestBuy "lost" it and BestBuy has a shitload of money so what better way to show them that you're serious by getting everyone's attention on their ****ty service? Sue for a ridiculous amount of money.

I would have done the same that's for sure, except I would have never bought a PSP warranty on anything expensive, that's just money down the drain.

Unfortunately for her Best Buy has each customer sign a disclaimer regrding data, and data loss everytime a client checks in a computer. Fortunately for her, Best Buy probably lost the signed copy of her paperwork along with the computer. ;)

I would have done the same.

54 million for BestBuy is nothing and what they did is screw a customer who paid for an extended PSP warranty on a laptop, of course they had the guts to do so.

54 million is what it took to get all your attention and you see it works and this is not what BestBuy wants. Good news travels fast, bad news travels faster and this is what she's doing.

This is not about data loss. This is about a ****ing product loss what don't you people understand? And really loss means nothing, it very well could have been theft by an employee because I have friends who work/worked at bestbuy and they all claim its too easy to steal anything.

The lesson here? Don't buy an extended warranty from anyone and encrypt your mobile data.

People are so greedy. All I ever see is SUED SUED SUED.

Her fault for not backing up, after all, people make mistakes, and you gotta be prepared whenever you can.

i think she should get something like $10,000 for having to deal with all this.

I read the article just fine. They offered more than enough, and she's only being greedy by trying to sue for such an absurd amount. If she had such important data she should have tried to secure and protect it. Even if best buy is at fault i'll still side with them, and their incompetent "geek squad", over someone who's only goal is apparently to get rich quick.

Noone gives a s**t whether she should have secured the data or not! Point is, the store lied to her and gave a cheap and disgusting offer. If it is identity theft, then there is A LOT at stake here. She patiently waited for weeks, kept inquiring, demanded a reasonable compensation in the beginning, had to use her OWN effort to prevent the theft of her identity and had to engage the lawyers while Best Buy kicked up their legs and slept through the whole thing.

Does THAT make her look like an opportunist ?

There's nothing wrong with wanting compensation but come on... You can't actually believe that $54 million is reasonable. No matter how much trouble she went through or how much data she lost, it's absurd. Hell, even a couple percent of that number would be still be quite a bit of "compensation" and would be much more reasonable. She could buy a new lappy(or ten) and live happily off of that for a little while, assuming she didn't splurge.

And if she wanted this to get media attention i'm sure she could of found a better way to do it. One that might not make her look like another lawsuit happy american. Cause i know there will be quite a few like me who will see her as such.

i think some of you are missing the point. there's no way she's going to get $54 million, and she knows it. she doesn't expect to get $54 million. (i don't know how anyone can think that she is really going to get or that she is really expecting to get $54 million.) she picked that amount because that was the amount requested in a really frivolous lawsuit involving a missing item (suit pants).

the point of the unreasonable figure is to force best buy to take responsibility for its practices (e.g., lying, offering a ridiculously low compensation, not disclosing loss of data, etc.).

If the information was so important, she'd have made an effort to back it up. All companies should have a backup plan. Just imagine if Microsoft suddenly lost data.

but its not the lost data that she cares about...its the fact that she has tons of personal data about herself and other people, and now someone else has it, and could potentially identity theft them.
