Have you noticed when some dumb Americans talk to British people, they like to throw in a jab like: ?we saved your ass in World War 2? - clearly an uneducated reference to the American involvement in WW2.

I really don't like how people like you call Americans dumb. It's simply not true. Also, I've never heard anyone use your quote before. Pretty stupid IMO.

Lets just get some facts straight, AMERICA DID NOT SAVE OUR ARSES IN WW2! Ameronly got involved to make money. And Perl Harbour was allowed to get attacked to form a catalyst. The fact that America?s involvement appeared to ?save our asses? was merely a ?side effect?.

Umm... I'm pretty sure we entered the war because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Also, I'm sure that the fact that Germany was sinking US supply ships had something to do with it. After we formally went to war with Japan, Italy and Germany declared war on us. And to further disprove you, by 1945 the US h$42 billion42 billion to British and French troops. Quite to opposite of what you claim.

Welcome to Neowin, where even the mods feed the trolls with flamebait.

Let me correct you:

"Welcome to Neowin, where even the mods can voice their opinions."

looking back, the US does not get on too well when it enters a war alone, i.e. vietnam

Well that’s a bull**** point too, the French, British and Australians were also involved in the Vietnam war.

Let me correct you:

Stating an opinion and saying you want to see any country ravaged by war just to get a rise out of people are two completely different things. I would have expected more from a mod.

The problem with this whole thread is 90% of the people posting don’t know enough about the subject to be able to discuss it properly. Most just post because they want to upset people or because they just like to be ass holes.

The French were in Vietnam for 100 years.

I scan the forums regularly and post rarely since most threads here usually get some good advice or replies quickly, but 6 pages its taken to get to someone who can point out whats going on.

Didnt take an awful lot of History myself but my "Lies to Children" education pointed to the following as the reasons Britain survived invasion.

1. Hitler turning from bombing airfields to carpet bombing cities, allowing the RAF time to regroup and redeploy with foreign pilots, mostly Poles i believe.

2. The invention and deployment of radar,

3. The transformation in role of the Luftwaffe from aerial support of ground attacks to carrying the attack alone

4. The decryption of enigma, something else the poles had a hand in I believe, though a machine was later captured by the British.

5. America entering the war.

Those all point to Hitlers impatience and arrogance as the reason we survived as a nation, and if any nation helped i was led to believe the Polish lent the greater help.

For winning the war then yes the US involvement was vital, supplying the manpower and extra aircaft necessary to pound and push Nazi-Germany into retreat and eventually defeat.

But come to our aid???? Save our A**es??? I dont think so, it was more a case of the US realising after the Pearl bombing that the European war would not pass them by and that they would themselves face battle on two fronts If we eventually did fall.

So to all our Grandfathers I say thanks, and to any individual who claims victory for his countries part GROW UP! It was a world war and all nations made their sacrifices and had their victories, and of all things most certain.... One Country did not win alone!

QFT!!!

It was a team effort essentially.

edit: I just want to bring up the film U571, which was an unnecessary Americanisation of a huge British victory in the Battle of the Atlantic. I think its this attitude that many of us, especially us brits, will regret, as it does a disservice to the men involved and the Royal Navy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been appalled by the comments made from both sides of the atlantic. It's called a world war for a reason!

USA did enter and was right to enter, they saw it as a time to become a global leader and take over from the British Empire.

The main problem I see if UK was invaded what would have happend to british empire, would we have dumped it and moved all people back to the UK? or would we have mearly given it to the nazis to make sure we were not taken?

Everyone joined in the war because in one way or another, their own future would be at risk. Look at the global market today, could you see the likes of china, america and europe working together on projects like now days? Probably not!

America needed to join in as it saw the western part of europe as a leader of the world, it would have given the nazis a big platform of resourses and people to launch more conflicts to take over the world. They had already taken chunks of europe and had allies, America could not afford to loose such countries which it could work with and get along. It would have meant a small section of friends. Thus leaving it a target. Nowdays you find countries don't start fight because the UN or Nato can come in.

You will also find that with huge numbers of your army tends to become less technological advanced and less skilled. With the empire you could use your less skilled soldiers to fight the smaller countries that were to be taken over. Nowdays we have a small base of skilled soliders. Such as your Seals or SAS etc etc each section has a purpose in the type of combat they delt with, where as in the old days I believe it wasn't so. It extends to the type of tools the armed forces get, such as people do not see the need for such huge fleets of ships considering the current global issue of terrorism. And again friends, we have friends which we can launch attacks from.

Also about this debt, yeah sure there was/is debt, but which country doesn't have debt to another country?

Thats my view anyway

Tonylock this is the dumbest and the most false thread ever read by me in my whole life.

Grow up mate, and yes U.S was part of the "Saving your ass part",Enlgand recieved innumerable weapons and technology from the U.S in the pre-involvment and post-involvement stages of the WW2.Without americans supply, england was lost and probably surrendered .

You know why europe is in debt with America, have you heard about the Marshall plan? who reconstructed europe eh? with what money? Go ask Americas bankers the have the perfect answer for you.

Go play at the park this isn't for you.

I didn't read much of the mumbo-jumbo that entailed past about page 2... but I really have to thank some higher power that didn't put any of us posters in any position of power.

We're friends, allies, people of a similar perspective. So why in hell do we have to bicker about who did what, why, when and where? It makes no difference. We do things to support each other and that's all that should matter. We're as far from corrupt as some places on this earth as we could possibly be, so rejoice in that notion, no?

Duly noted,excellent post.

Blind patriotism leads to individuals who happen to live in one land to always act as if they're insulted when someone comments negatively about their country...

It's such a tragedy to see people associate their beliefs with the country they live in. It's even worse when all of you, who are fighting over each country's "image", are disrespecting the millions of soldiers and innocent civilians who died because of stupid, selfish leaders by acting as if you know the history from cover to cover just because you picked up a history book and could cite figures.

    • Age of Empires Mobile comes to PC, here's how to carry over progress from your phone by Ivan Jenic Image: YouTube/Microsoft Microsoft just released Age of Empires Mobile for PC. The game, officially called Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition, is available for free on Steam and Microsoft Store, almost two years after its initial release for handheld devices. Age of Empires is one of those franchises that entire generations grew up with. The original came out in 1997, and immediately got people hooked to building civilizations and crushing their enemies on the battlefield. However, the franchise today is a far cry from its roots, as Age of Empires Mobile is, well, a game optimized for handheld devices, and not a classic RTS title we’ve all loved for years. And, of course, it includes in-game purchases. The PC version is still a mobile game at its core, but it’s been optimized for desktop play. There’s mouse control, full keyboard compatibility, and a refined UI. Microsoft also refreshed the visuals with some 4k textures, so the game should look better on larger screens. The game supports Crossplay, so you can switch between your phone, tablet, and PC without losing anything. But linked progress doesn’t come out of the box, as you have to enable it first. Here’s how to link your progress: On your mobile device, open Age of Empires Mobile. Go to Settings (Gear icon) > Account. Select Bind Account and choose a sign-in option. Once you enable account binding, sign in on PC using the same method, and your progress will be accessible across all your devices. Xbox Game Pass subscribers also get a bonus reward pack on PC, which includes: 1 Monthly Pass Token 1 Custom Resource Chest 10 Universal 60-Minute Speed-Ups 1,000 Empire Coins Exclusive Player Portrait Frame You can find more info about Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition, as well as download links, on the Age of Empires official website.
    • Apple Watch Series 11 GPS just crashed to 30% off in this fast-moving Prime Day deal by Karthik Mudaliar The Apple Watch Series 11 is available for $279, down from its $399 list price, saving buyers $120, or 30%. Amazon labels the offer as selling fast, so the current price may not remain available for long. This GPS model features a 42mm aluminum case, an Always-On Retina LTPO3 OLED display capable of reaching up to 2,000 nits, and an Ion-X glass surface with improved scratch resistance. Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, with fast charging providing up to eight hours of use from a 15-minute charge. Health and fitness tools include sleep scoring, temperature sensing, ECG support, heart-rate alerts, workout tracking, sleep apnea notifications, and hypertension notifications, where available. The watch also carries IP6X dust resistance and 50-meter water resistance. This configuration is best suited to iPhone owners who want comprehensive health tracking, notifications, contactless payments, and workout data without stepping up to a larger or cellular-equipped model. The smaller case should also appeal to buyers who prefer a lighter watch, while the S/M band fits wrists measuring 130mm to 180mm. With the current generation now significantly below its usual retail price, this is a strong time to replace an aging Apple Watch or buy a first model without compromising on Apple’s newest health and display features. • The laptop in the bedroom is an Acer with i7-10510U CPU. Acer's website states they will not be upgrading it so I had little choice other than disable secure boot. I know next to nothing on these matters so hopefully it will be fine.
    • GitHub removes manual model selection from Copilot free and student plans by Karthik Mudaliar GitHub is removing the ability to manually select an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans, making its automatic routing system the default and only way to choose a model. This means users on these tiers will no longer be able to deliberately select a particular OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Microsoft model for a task. In its announcement, GitHub said Copilot Auto will dynamically choose what it considers the best model for each request. Free and Student accounts will retain access to models from multiple families, although the available selection will continue to depend on the restrictions attached to each plan. GitHub did not identify a fixed pool of models that Auto will always use, and its documentation warns that model availability can change over time. GitHub describes Auto as more than a random fallback system. On supported surfaces, its task-optimization technology evaluates the complexity of a request alongside real-time information about model health and availability. Straightforward prompts can be routed to faster and less expensive models, while more demanding coding tasks may be sent to higher-cost reasoning models. The company says this approach should reduce rate limiting, latency, and failed requests. Auto generally selects one model along natural prompt-caching boundaries rather than repeatedly switching models during a session, as GitHub found that mid-session changes increased costs without producing sufficient improvements in output quality. Users can still check which model generated a response. In Copilot Chat, the information appears when hovering over an answer, while Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent display the selected model alongside their output. Auto is available in Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI, and the cloud agent, with the exact implementation and release status varying between supported development environments. The latest restriction follows several months of adjustments to Copilot’s individual plans. GitHub temporarily halted new Pro, Pro+, and Student subscriptions in April as it sought to manage demand and service reliability. It later introduced token-based billing and began gradually reopening individual-plan registrations on June 17. Alongside the picker change, GitHub is retiring the “Preview” label from Microsoft-developed models. It argues that the label is no longer necessary because Auto handles model routing and models are continuously updated behind the scenes.
