Ray Stevenson on Playing Volstagg in Thor

Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) talked to Empire about how he will play Volstagg the Valiant, one of the Warriors Three, in Marvel Studios' Thor.

He tells the magazine they will be using a fat suit to make the actor bigger. "It's fantastic. I've tried the suit on, and what they've done is kind of sex him up: he's sort of slimmer but rounder," said Stevenson.

He added that the character has "got every bit of that Falstaffian verve and vigour, and a bit of a beergut to suggest that enormous appetite, but he's not the sort of Weeble-shaped figure he is in the comics. He's Falstaff with muscles. I've got this amazing foam-injected undersuit that flexes with me. I can't wait!"

Filming on the Kenneth Branagh-directed film will start in January for a May 20, 2011 release.

Kevin Feige predicts 'Thor' success (Digital Spy)

Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige has revealed he has high hopes for Thor after seeing a series of costume tests.

Fiege gave Marvel.com his views on a decade-worth of Marvel inspired films and he picked out Kenneth Branagh's take on the Norse God of Thunder as the next big thing to watch out for.

"To be honest the thing that I'm most excited about right now though, is the screen test we just finished for Thor," he said.

"We've done some costume tests and watching the Asgardians walk onto the sound stage takes me back to that first time I saw the X-Men on the set all together in Toronto.

"Only it was unlike anything we've ever put on film before. It's great to be starting the next decade in such an exciting way just as we did last decade.

"We're really redefining the comic book genre and what a Marvel movie can be. It's going to be great."

Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, opens in US cinemas on May 20, 2011.

Renner plays down 'Hawkeye' link (Digital Spy)

Actor Jeremy Renner has set the record straight over rumours that he is taking on the role of Hawkeye in an upcoming Marvel movie.

Speculation started after The Hurt Locker star met with the studio and writer Zak Penn to talk about a planned film adaptation of The Avengers, in which the superhero archer is expected to appear.

But Renner told Movieline: "That was just one of those things that got blown way out of proportion. It was an idea.

"Those Marvel guys, I?m a big fan of them. They?re so smart about how they want to do these things - they have Captain America, and Thor coming around, Iron Man 2 and then I happen to know Zak Penn, who?s writing The Avengers.

"So they thought Hawkeye is an interesting role and asked me if I knew anything about him. I said no, so they gave me their sort of spiel on what he was, and I thought that it was kind of interesting.

"The only reason it came out this early, because Avengers is two years away, is that they?re thinking, OK, we may throw him in Thor, we may not, as a cameo. You know what I mean? So there?s truth that we talked about it, but there?s no truth to me doing it."

The big news today involves some last minute casting changes for Kenneth Branagh?s Thor. Stuart Townsend, who was cast as Fandral, has left the film over ?creative differences?. In his stead will be Joshua Dallas, a young actor with not much of a profile. Dallas has previously been cast in the sequel to the UK horror classic The Descent, and will also be seen in the upcoming George Lucas-produced Red Tails.

With production for Thor gearing up to start today, the news also brings to mind another famous last-minute casting move involving Townsend ? his replacement by Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Peter Jackson had stated that they simply realized a bit late that a much older actor was necessary for the role. There didn?t seem much animosity from Jackson at the time, and I?m sure I?m not alone in thinking that we?re all better off with Viggo?s performance.

Speaking to EW back in 2002, Townsend was noticeably bitter about being replaced:

Two weeks ago I finally read an article where the filmmakers said, ?We were totally wrong about Stuart and we accept that it was our fault,? which was so nice because I did get shafted up the a?. I was there rehearsing and training for two months, then was fired the day before filming began. After that I was told they wouldn?t pay me because I was in breach of contract due to not having worked long enough.

I had been having a rough time with them, so I was almost relieved to be leaving until they told me I wouldn?t be paid. I have no good feelings for those people in charge, I really don?t. The director [Peter Jackson] wanted me and then apparently thought better of it because he really wanted someone 20 years older than me and completely different.

Following that replacement, Townsend went on to star in not-so-great films like Queen of the Damned and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. His career never truly rebounded (although he did dabble in directing with 2007?s Battle in Seattle), and Thor was to be his next shot at stardom.

The term ?creative differences? is Hollywood-speak for practically anything, so it?ll be interesting to see what specifics emerge from this whole ordeal. An anonymous source told AICN earlier today that Townsend was fired after showing up six hours late for a screen test, but the fact that the studio had a replacement ready to go so soon points to trouble brewing for some time.

As for Dallas, there?s not much to be said about him yet. I haven?t seen him in anything thus far, but it?s clear that with Thor he?s landed the role of a lifetime. I don?t suspect Fandral, or the rest of the Warrior Three, will get much screen time given how much the film seems to be bursting at the seams. But what little screen time he does get will certainly be the most important of his career.

There's almost no new info, but a nice crystallization, in this official synopsis of the hammer-swinging Marvel movie:

The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

In an interview with MTV Samuel L. Jackson revealed that he has yet to hear anything about his involvement in Thor, even though his name is down on the cast list.

?Nobody?s told me anything,? Jackson laughed when asked about the ?Thor? role. ?I was reading the trades last week and I saw the cast list. My name was in it, so maybe I am doing something that I don?t know about and I?ll hear about it soon.?

Even so, he said he?s confident that Fury can fit into the world established by Branagh?s ?Thor.?

?It all depends on where they find him,? he said. ?If they?re dealing with that particular timeline? Hey, they?re shooting it in Santa Fe, it?s not like they?re shooting it in Norway.?

Thor has only just started filming and it will continue for a few more months, so Jackson will probably be contacted when the time comes. If the appearance of Nick Fury will be anything like that in Iron Man Jackson may only be needed for an end of credits/final scene, so they?ll probably be filming that towards the end of production.

Idris Elba plays Heimdall, the guadian of the Bifrost Bridge between Earth and Asgard, and he says he starts filming in February (long after principal photography's started ? so he's probably not in the film that much.) "I've got a big sword, a real big sword!" He exults. Meanwhile, Anthony Hopkins says that when he puts on his long wig to play Odin, he looks like Billy Connolly. [Flicks And Bits and Bleeding Cool via Screenrant]

Kevin Feige insists that this movie is about straight-up science.

We're doing the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Walt Simonson/J Michael Straczynski Thor. We're not doing the blow the dust of the old Norse book in your library Thor and in the Thor of the Marvel universe there's a race called The Asgardians, and we're linked through this tree of life that we're unaware of. Its real science, but we don't know about it yet. The Thor movie is about teaching people that.

Joseph Gatt, who plays an undisclosed villain in the movie, says it's very true to the comics, with a few differences to make it palatable to non-comic-fans. The sets are the most beautiful he's ever seen. Whoever he's playing, it's someone muscular and imposing, who has a lot of physical action. And he says the action sequences will be incredible:

Vic Armstrong is directing the second unit (action unit) and is most famous for bring the action to "Indiana Jones", "The Mummy", "Mission Impossible", "James Bond" etc. So thing... many characters, big sets and huge stunts!

[Comic Book Movie]

Anthony Hopkins (Odin) adds that it's a "really big movie," and he hopes he looks like God in it. [Sci Fi Wire]

And the movie is in negotiations for permission to film a scene involving six horses on a beach. [Del Mar Times via Comic Book Resources]

'Thor' star Anthony Hopkins explains the ruthless charm of Odin

Anthony Hopkins is ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge to Asgard. "For 'Thor,'" he pointed out, "I don't just play a father, I play the god-father."

Work is underway on the fourth Marvel Studios film, and Hopkins said he is enthused about working with the cast that is led by Chris Hemsworth (who played the doomed father of James T. Kirk in "Star Trek") as the Thunder God and Natalie Portman as his mortal love, Jane Foster.

Anthony Hopkins 2007 Hopkins is taking on the role of Odin, ruler of Asgard and father of both the noble Thor and the nefarious Loki. The 72-year-old actor said it's a meaty role for him and, like his role in "The Wolfman," it allows him to test the tricky physics of paternal relationships.

"I'm very interested in that relationship between fathers and sons," Hopkins said. "My father's relationship with me was cold. He was a hot-blood character but to me, cold. When I was young, he expressed his disappointment because I was bad in school and all of that. He didn't mean any harm, but I felt I could never meet up to his expectations."

The morality tales and melodramas of Marvel Comics have a lot of fascinating fathers, and they have led to some memorable performances in Hollywood's adaptations -- Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn, William Hurt as Gen. "Thunderbolt" Ross and Brian Cox as William Stryker spring to mind.

Hopkins, a native of Wales, has plenty of experience with sword scabbards and royal roles or antiquity. On that list of roles: He was Hrothgar in the Robert Zemeckis version of "Beowulf," Titus Andronicus in the 1999 film "Titus" and, way back in 1968, he made his feature-film debut as Richard the Lionhearted in Anthony Harvey's sublime "A Lion in Winter."

He said he has high hopes for "Thor" ( "Kenneth Branagh is such a terrific director and a wonderful guy to work with") especially because he finds a personal resonance in the Odin role.

"He's a stern man. He's a man with purpose. I play the god who banishes his son from the kingdom of Asgard because he screwed up. He's a hot-headed, temperamental young man --- probably a chip off of the old block -- but I decide he's not really ready to rule the future kingdom, so I banish him. I'm harsh and my wife complains and I say, 'That is why I'm king.' He's ruthless, take-it-or-leave-it. Women are much more forgiving; men are not so forgiving. I know in my life, my karma is, 'If you don't like it, tough, move on.' And I move on. I'm a little like Odin myself."

Last week we showed you the first clip from Iron Man 2. And now hawk-eyed fans have spotted what might be another one of Marvel's infamous cameos. Also, there are new and disturbing-looking Iron Man 2 toys.

If you go back and watch the new clip, right around 1:18 there's an inmate getting his mugshot taken. It looks a little something like this....

According to CinemaBlend, that right there, is Thor. We can't really tell if that's Thor actor Chris Hemsworth or not, but the camera certainly does intentionally pan right over to that action. Plus Marvel loves inserting little Easter Eggs here and there for fans, so why not?

We all know that the events in Iron Man (and possibly Iron Man 2) take place before The Incredible Hulk. How does Thor fit into this time-line?

In terms of time-line, Thor is set after The Incredible Hulk. In the script we make mention of gamma radiation and one of the scientist characters, I think Stellan Skarsgard's Professor Ford recalls, ?There was brilliant scientist (Bruce Banner). He was a genius with gamma radiation and somehow S.H.I.E.L.D. made him disappear.? So Thor's story would take place after The Incredible Hulk.

How does Thor figure into The Avengers? Does he become a full-fledged member of the team?

Basically, at the end of the movie, Thor makes mention to Clark Gregg's character Agent Coulson that his kingdom of Asgard and S.H.I.E.L.D. are on the same side and whenever they need his help, he will be there to assist them in battle. It does leave it open, with Thor basically saying ?When you need me and you want to assemble a team, I?m down.? So, this is obviously pre-Avengers, post-Incredible Hulk.

So at this point are the Avengers already ?assembled? like when Tony Stark told General Ross (William Hurt) at the Incredible Hulk's conclusion: ?We're putting a team together.??

At this point, Nick Fury and Tony Stark would have already started amassing people.

How is an actor and director as deeply rooted in the world of Shakespeare like Kenneth Branagh handling comic book material like Thor?

Branagh is fantastic. The guy is a passionate director. He makes everything and everyone important, no matter how small their role in the production is. He's keeping the material very close to the comic. The tone is ? even the way the stuff looks ? is darker. So it?s cool. Iron Man was cool because it was light, but not too light like the Batman movies that Tim Burton made and it was not as heavy as say, Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight. Iron Man was the perfect comic book movie because it was the light and the dark sides sort of mixed together. Thor balances the same things as well. It plays the light side with the stuff on Earth and then the heavier side with what happens up in Asgard and the battle that occurs. Marvel has done a really good job of trying to blend what they need to have a successful movie and what they need to keep all the fan boys happy. They're doing an excellent job.

Chris Hemsworth in the lead role of Thor.

He?s not only f*ing great, but a cool guy and about as normal a guy that you?ll ever meet. I know everyone is saying that. Chris had auditioned for another movie, but failed to win the part, yet he was very open and self-deprecating about it. He even said ?Yeah, yeah. I auditioned for that. But apparently I was pretty terrible.? He?ll have that sort of attitude about it and kind of make fun of himself. ?Yeah, I pretty much stunk the joint up when I went in and auditioned for that.? He?s got that kind of self deprecating humor. Very, very cool dude. He is a perfect Thor. The guy?s a physical specimen. He?s 6?4??/6?5?? and he?s built like a brick house. He looks like he came down off that Rainbow Bridge and was ready to rock.

What about the look of Thor's costume and the iconic hammer?

Surprisingly, the costume looks amazing. We could tell early on from the production sketches of costumes and sets that this was going to be something good. It?s just beautiful and the designers really took it to heart. If you look at some of the more recent Thor comics that are out now, the tone and the costuming is that. It?s basically, the way you read the comics now, they?re updated the way they are now and that?s how the costumes are. I think everyone is going to be very, very happy. Nothing looks cheesy or cheap. Everything looks like it?s real. Everything looks like it came from that period. And everything looks right on all the actors. Nothing looks stupid. I guess that?s the best word. It's just jaw-dropping even to the Marvel executives.

When might we finally see a teaser trailer?

Probably at Comic Con. The scheduled release is date is May 6, 2011. I think that?s the actual release date, handed down from Marvel. They could put it in front of the new Iron Man 2 movie, but that's this May and a little too soon. Marvel wants to release the film exactly a year after Iron Man 2. The release is almost 365 days later. And then Captain America in July 2011 and The Avengers will be the following year, 2012. That?s what they?re trying to do, line them up like that. May of every year, there will be a new Marvel movie out.

Are there any Easter eggs or hidden clues in Thor?

No, in terms of the script, it?s pretty straight forward. It?s more through the dialogue, here and there that they?ll say something. Everything?s obviously connected, like every piece of S.H.I.E.L.D. tech has the Stark Industries logo on it. Even on a pen or computer screens in the movie. You?ll notice it on the computer screen?s upper left-hand corner, everything says Stark Industries. You already know that we have a deal with Tony Stark, which you kind of got from the first Iron Man's conclusion. Now you know S.H.I.E.L.D. is officially in league with him. And you?ll probably see stuff like that in Captain America or The Avengers on a S.H.I.E.L.D. heli-carrier.

    • The Light of Life? We actually do glow till our Death, study finds by Sayan Sen Image by Rafael Rendon via Pexels A study by researchers at the University of Calgary has found that living organisms produce an extremely faint light known as ultraweak photon emission, and that this glow appears to drop significantly after death. The research was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry in April 2025 and quickly drew widespread attention, leading to more than 200 news stories about the findings. Ultraweak photon emission (or UPE), sometimes called biophoton emission, refers to tiny amounts of light released by living cells as a result of normal biological activity. A photon is the basic particle of light, and researchers say every living system examined so far, including plants and animals, has been found to emit these photons. The glow is far too faint to be seen by the human eye. “I suppose it has a little to do with people being reminded of auras,” says Dr. Christoph Simon, PhD, one of the authors of the study and a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science. “It is a fact that living beings glow. It’s a very weak glow, but it’s there and visible with very sensitive cameras.” According to the study, the light involved is extremely weak, ranging from 10 to 1,000 photons per square centimetre per second across a spectral range of 200 to 1,000 nanometres. For comparison, a nanometre is one-billionth of a metre and is commonly used to measure wavelengths of light. Detecting emissions at such low levels requires highly specialized equipment. To study the phenomenon, researchers used electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) and charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras. These imaging systems are designed to detect extremely small amounts of light, including individual photons, while minimizing background noise. The technology allowed researchers to capture signals that would otherwise be impossible to observe. The team worked with the Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in Ottawa to examine photon emissions in mice. Researchers took two-hour exposure images of the animals before and after death and compared the results. “We saw that the level of light that they emit – this biophoton glow – is distinctly different between living and dead animals,” says Dr. Daniel Oblak, PhD, an associate professor in Physics and Astronomy and the corresponding author of the study. The images showed a clear decrease in photon emissions after death across the entire body of each mouse. According to the researchers, this provided direct evidence that living and dead tissue produce different levels of ultraweak photon emission. “It’s a very small amount and it’s, of course, very tricky to detect,” Oblak says. The study grew out of discussions between Simon, whose research interests include quantum biology, and Oblak, whose work focuses on detecting light for quantum communication experiments. Quantum biology is a field that explores whether processes described by quantum physics, which studies matter and energy at very small scales, may also play a role in living systems. “Since I work as a quantum physicist on light detection for quantum communication, I thought that experimentally we have a lot of the tools to be able to detect the light,” Oblak explains. The researchers also investigated UPE in plants and found that the light changed in response to stress. When plants were exposed to higher temperatures or physically injured, their photon emissions increased. Chemical treatments also affected the glow. Among the substances tested, the local anesthetic benzocaine produced the strongest emission response when applied to injured plant tissue. These findings suggest that ultraweak photon emission is closely linked to biochemical and metabolic activity inside living organisms. Metabolism refers to the chemical reactions that allow cells and organisms to stay alive and function. Because these reactions change when an organism experiences stress, injury or disease, researchers believe UPE may provide a way to monitor those changes. The researchers stress that the glow is a physical and biological phenomenon, not a metaphysical one. Oblak says more research is needed to understand exactly how the light is produced and what information it may reveal about the condition of living tissue. “We must understand what that is to figure out what’s happening,” he says. “If we can understand how that relates to certain influences on the body – stress, diseases – then that could be used as a diagnostic tool.” The researchers believe the technique could eventually help scientists study health and disease without invasive procedures. Because UPE can be measured without adding dyes, markers or labels, it may offer a way to monitor whether tissue is healthy, damaged or alive. In plants, it could help researchers better understand how organisms respond to injury, heat and other forms of stress. While the work is still in its early stages, the study demonstrates that ultraweak photon emission imaging can provide a non-invasive and label-free way to observe biological activity. Researchers say the approach could become a useful tool for studying vitality, stress responses and other important processes in both animals and plants.
