Well.. at least it's not any of the other mentioned actors like Matthew Mcconaughey etc. Matthew Mcconaughey was one of the worst picks if you ask me. I haven't seen Chris Hemsworth in any movie yet so I can't judge on if he's fit for the role or not. I'm glad that they've finally casted Thor though :)

Yeah he's still up for Cap tho...which I hope he doesn't get either...someone unknown please.

Oh yeah, he was cast for Captain America. If he's going to be chosen, then they're making a big mistake imo.

Marvel Studios Casts UK Actor Tom Hiddleston As Nemesis Loki

EXCLUSIVE MONDAY UPDATE: I've learned that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Thor director Kenneth Branagh have cast their Loki, the nemesis to the lead in Thor set for release on May 20, 2011. He's Tom Hiddleston, unknown to American audiences but an award-winning British actor and Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts (RADA) graduate. He played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's The Gathering Storm, but, more to the point, note that Hiddleston starred in Ivanov opposite Sir Kenneth on the London stage and also starred with him in the BBC miniseries Wallander. Marvel Studios won't confirm my news, but Hiddleston had been considered as a possible Thor. See my previous, 'Thor': Unknowns? There had been a big Internet push to cast Josh Hartnett in the Loki role but instead Marvel went with an unknown. This follows my news of the weekend casting of 25-year-old Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth as Thor since Branagh was in town to finalize the principal cast. See my previous, EXCLUSIVE: Chris Hemsworth Is 'Thor'.

I hear the Marvel Studios press release about both castings is being written and should be released soon. Chris Hemsworth also a virtual unknown to American audiences, yet he was approved to play the lead role in Thor by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the film's director Kenneth Branagh. Hemsworth can currently be seen as "George Kirk" in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot and also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists last Thursday. (He's currently filming Joss Whedon's horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA, and I heard the studio was so hot on him that's why it cast Hemsworth in the action pic.) The 25-year-old hunk played "Kim Hyde" on 171 episodes of Home and Away, the successful Oz TV series where Heath Ledger started. The way Chris Hemsworth got the part of Thor is one of those great Hollywood stories that happens only once in a blue moon. I have all the details here.

CineFOOLS has posted a great interview with Thor co-writer Ashley Miller talking about the Marvel Studios comic book adaptation. Here's a cool excerpt from the article:

Not in the sense that you'd want to see a generic "dark" take on Thor, but in the sense that you want to feel Thor's rage when he rages. You want to see him fight like hell, and take as much he dishes out -- maybe more. You want to have a visceral reaction to the guy, and what happens to him. You don't want his adventures to be clean and antiseptic. You want to see the dirt, and grime and blood. You want to feel every bone crunching moment of every fight. And when he unleashes the storm, you want to feel like you're seeing the power of a GOD at work.

Check out the full interview here! Also, The Daily Mail talked to Tom Hiddleston about playing the villain, Loki. Check out these bits...

'Loki's like a comic book version of Edmund in King Lear, but nastier,' Tom observed.

How much nastier? 'Well, Loki's skilled in black magic and scorcery. He's a shape-shifter and has all sorts of super powers from the dark arts. He can turn clouds into dragons, things like that.'

Between now and January, when Thor begins shooting, Tom has to keep himself fit and healthy.

'Ken wants Loki to have a lean and hungry look, like Cassius in Julius Caesar. Physically, he can't be posing as Thor.'

Thor is scheduled for a May 20, 2011 release.

Odin Cast!

"According to Rich Johnston?s new site Bleeding Cool, Brian Blessed has been cast as Odin, All-Father of Valhalla in Kenneth Branagh?s Thor. Frankly, I?m very happy with this news. The only way I could be happier is if somebody could get me confirmation that Blessed would record a commentary track for the film - the one he did for Flash Gordon is a real favorite in my household. I sincerely hope Max von Sydow has heard it.

Blessed is these days more famous for his general all round demeanor, his mountaineering exploits (and mountainous stature) and his BOOMING voice than any specific role, though his Flash Gordon role as Prince Vultan would probably be his most popular turn. That gave rise to his ?Gordon?s Alive?? catchphrase which, apparently, he still yells out in his gruff-jolly way for fans whenever asked.

I once heard a stand up comedian do a long routine about sleeping with Blessed?s daughter, but I won?t repeat any of it here or even name the act, not after all of that Russel Brand/Jonathan Ross/Andrew Sachs nonsense. Suffice to say, Blessed?s booming voice came into play in a rather amusing way.

I?m expecting to see several other frequent collaborators of Branagh to come rolling up in the Thor picture, from Richard Briers to Stephen Fry. If any of you know the comic book well enough you might like to tip me off as to what parts could suit them. Are they likely to get only newly minted parts or day player pieces, or are there some key parts for any of them?

The appeal to me with this Thor project is Branagh, really. I don?t think the comic book really means that much to me, though several of Branagh?s previous films, from Dead Again to Hamlet, I?ve liked a great deal. Peter?s Friends, however? that?s a different story. That one, I try to forget." (/film[/b]t-as-odin-in-thor/"]/film)

Thor: Donald Blake won?t appear, but the film will take place more on contemporary Earth than Viking times. This makes me more interested in the project, since I?m not usually entertained in fantasy sword and sandel type films. Feige describes the movie as ?very much a Marvel superhero movie? but admits that ?the movie audience it?s going to expand that definition more and more.? On casting Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Feige says ?It was like, ?There?s no question that Slash Film??? (Slash Film)

When reporting on cast additions to Your Highness the other day I?d been thinking about what an interesting career Natalie Portman has crafted, in terms of playing in genre-ish films while keeping a pretty serious offscreen persona. And now Portman has been confirmed as part of the cast in Kenneth Branagh?s Thor opposite Chris Hemsworth (as Thor) and Tom Hiddleston (as Loki). She?ll play Jane Foster, nurse to Thor?s human alter-ego Donald Blake. Nikke Finke had reported the casting news back in March, but this is the first confirmation, and the first release to specify Portman?s role.

Jane Foster is a more sedate role than I?d hoped for her in this one, but I suppose it?s an offset to her warrior princess character in Your Highness. It also pegs the movie as taking place more on Earth than some had assumed; if Foster is a major character then we?ll be seeing a lot of the human version of Thor. She?s got to fall for him somehow, right? In the core storyline Foster learned that Blake was Thor, and even went with him to Asgard, but we don?t know if that?ll happen on screen. Let?s hope Hemsworth is able to work with Portman in a way that Hayden Christensen was never quite allowed to.

Here?s the synopsis from Marvel?s press release, which notes that the charaMarvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.s of Asgard to invade Earth.

Should've been Dolph Lundgren.

I think Brad Pitt could be very good here. I think he's at a point where he's really trying to bring something unique and different to his roles, and that could help here.

To your first statement, no, not in a million years, he screwed up He-Man.

I can see Brad Pitt as the human vessel for Thor, but to play Thor I'd love to see James Preston Rogers get the role.

Hm... I think that Brad Pitt would be good. I was surprised to see anything about him being considered honestly. I didn't think Marvel was going after the real big names. If they do the Avengers tie in movie they have planned will be REALLY expensive...

I guess we'll just have to see...

Oh, did they? Cool. I'm not sure how he'll do honestly... He doesn't seem imposing enough for Thor...

Diora Baird announced on Twitter that she has auditioned for a role in the movie as a character described as "pretty, but sturdy with muscle." She wouldn't reveal who the character is, but CHUD speculates it could be an Asgardian, such as Sif or the Enchantress.

Two more actors have joined Thor. Jaimie Alexander (Kyle XY) and Colm Feore (Riddick, Face/Off) have joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh?s Marvel comic book adaptation. Alexander will play Sif, who is skilled Asgardian warrior who can hold her own, and is a love interest of Thor. However, the identity of Feore?s character is being kept tightly under wraps, and THR claims ?the studio isn?t even sending the actors the script ? though it is known to be a villain.?

Alexander and Feore join Chris Hemsworth (who played George Kirk in Star Trek) who plays the title character, Tom Hiddleston as Thor?s nemesis Loki, Brian Blessed as Odin, and Natalie Portman who plays Thor?s human love interest Jane Foster.

Written by Mark Protosevich, the story begins as the arrogant God Thor is sent by his father Odin to learn humility in the body of a partially disabled medical student Donald Blake. He discovers Thor?s hammer and learns to change back and forth into the Thunder God. On Earth, Thor ?learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.? Marvel has announced a May 20th 2011 release date for the film.

Stellan Skarsg?rd has revealed to TT Spektra that he will have a role in Marvel Studios' Thor movie. Swedish site Ystads Allehanda reported on the casting in Swedish, but here is a rough translation:

Stellan Skarsg?rd is ready for a role in action movie "Thor."

Everything is still secret about the project and Skarsg?rd can not reveal what role he will play.

"They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy," said Stellan Skarsg?rd to TT spectra.

Some time ago it was said that Stellan Skarsg?rd's son, Alexander Skarsg?rd, was on his way to the title role in "Thor." In the end however, it became Chris Hemsworth, known for "Star Trek," who got the job.

Paramount is eying a May 20, 2011 release for Thor. Kenneth Branagh will direct the comic book adaptation, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Samuel L. Jackson.

The epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. Comic Book Resources attended the Baltimore Comic-Con, where Brain Michael Bendis briefly talked about the connection between the Marvel Studios movies and the Thor script:

He also confirmed again that all of the movies would have certain threads that run through them for those excited to see connections.

"I'm Thor. A Jewy Thor," Bendis said when asked about casting for the flicks. On a more serious note, the "New Avengers" writer added, "I was reading the new script just last night. Very, very good."

The Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor will star Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie is scheduled for a May 20, 2011 release.
