Captain America: The First Avenger (July 2011)

Recommended Posts

I'm with Rathe on this one. I'm pretty sure Rogers came before Bradley. While I wouldn't mind a black Captain America I'd prefer it if he were white. :$ Race aside, Will Smith doesn't have the right build for the role, he should be jacked like the above picture.

Then I'm wrong with the names but I'm 100% positive that the first Captain America was a black guy. Smith as Black Panther would be nice indeed. If only they where planning a movie based on him.

I beleive that you are wrong. Remember Captain America dates the whole way back to 1941. The idea of a black man as Captain America would have been unthinkable back in those days. I don't think there was a mainstream black comic book hero until the late 60's.

See, here's where you are wrong. The very first Captain America was black. That's why I have no clue why everyone is against Will Smith playing Captain America.

Also, I read loads of Captain America comics so you dont have to tell me about if he's white or not ;)

This is just like the Wolverine thread. They thought it was wrong that teenage Wolverine had claws because they thought Weapon X gave him the claws. But they never actually read any of the origin comics. Same goes here. If you actually had read the comics, you'd known about Isaiah Bradley :)

Unless Will Smith can grow muscles fast I don't see him as Captain America, maybe Ronnie Coleman (Youtube) can play the role

^I honestly do not want to see a wrestler in a movie like this one.

@rathefeare: I don't mean the first Captain America where the comic books began with but in the history of Captain America and the super soldier program. But yeah, I stand corrected. Isaiah Bradley is the person who they tested the serum to re-create the formula.

Part of the problem with comic book characters is always going to be that people don't look like that in real life, especially the women (someone post a Wonder Woman pic). Look at that Isaiah Bradley picture 99.9% of people are not that jacked. Those that come closest are body builders and pro wrestlers. Out of those two jobs pro wrestlers have some acting ability thus the initial attraction to using them in these roles I think. We need to have some kind of leeway in the body department.

Regarding Will Smith, though I think him not ideal for Cappy. I do recall him having a pretty decent physique for Ali, so I like him for a Marvel spot at some point.

Yea but this is comic books were talking here. We can't have some skinny little punk representing Captain America. Ironman/War Machine/Spiderman/Superman, hell even Batman. They can be smaller guys because they weren't meant to be jacked. But Captain America was supposed to be big, Wolverine is supposed to be big. They don't have to be a wrestler or something but they need to be big. Will Smith might be fit but he's still pretty skinny and has a small upper body.

We need to get Arnie to be Captain America! accent and all!! peeeeeeerrrfect

Besides the shield in the logo for Captain America is Steve Rogers' shield not Isaiah Bradley's. That's enough for me.

Couldn't find a real Black Panther thread and people were talking about it here, so..

British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who is playing Heavy Duty in G.I. Joe and stars on "Lost" as Mr. Eko, might be the next actor in the running to play Marvel's Black Panther. MTV just spoke with Adewale on a red carpet in San Diego last night and he had this to say: "We're talking to Marvel about Black Panther? This is the first round, so hopefully they'll look at G.I. Joe and see the potential, but it's about time we have a black superhero." Adewale is the latest actor to be in the running for the superhero role after both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Djimon Hounsou previously. But will this version finally see the light of day?

Way, way back in February of 2007, Marvel's Kevin Feige said that "Captain America and Thor and Black Panther and The Avengers are all on our development slate right now." All of those projects actually exist and are coming soon - except Black Panther. But let's jump back to June, where Feige said they'd "be announcing another new movie for 2012 within the next few months." As far as I know, that announcement hasn't been made. Maybe they're waiting to see how well G.I. Joe does and see if Adewale is any good before moving forward with Black Panther. That could be what's going on here, but that's just pure speculation.

Black Panther is a superhero who first appeared in Marvel's "Fantastic Four" comics in 1966. He was the first prominent black superhero in comic history and the first to get his own comic book. The title of "Black Panther" is a rank of chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan. As chieftain, the Panther has superhumanly acute senses (especially eyesight, night vision, and sense of smell) and an increase in strength, speed, and stamina. I'd love to see a Black Panther movie and would've liked seeing any of the previously mentioned actors take on the role. We'll let you know how this develops. In the meantime - is he a good choice?

Earlier today I posted about a comment that director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) made during an interview with the Los Angeles Times, while on the England set of his latest film Clash of the Titans. There were also a few other interesting tidbits have emerged from the interview concerning Leterrier?s future with Marvel, The Incredible Hulk 2, The Avengers and his thoughts on the early designs for The First Avenger: Captain America. Read the full interview over at LATimes, or check out the highlights below:

* Apparently, Leterrier is contracted to direct one more film with Marvel.

* Right now it does not look like he will be directing a sequel to The Incredible Hulk. Likewise, right now I doubt that Marvel will be making a sequel to The Incredible Hulk.

* His next Marvel film will likely be something else ? ?something different that I can really put my touch on.?

* Like everyone else, Leterrier ?would love to do the Avengers film.? And who wouldn?t, really?

* He has seen some of the design work Marvel is doing for The First Avenger: Captain America and says it ?looks amazing? and is ?going to be so cool.? He describes it as ?a period piece?like Raiders of the Lost Ark but ?with more gadgets?? He later clarified, ?It?s Raiders meets Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan.? Which makes sense since Captain director Joe Johnston was the art director on Raiders, and the director of The Rocketeer.

Marvel's Joe Quesada says he's seen a couple outlines and an initial screenplay, and (not surprisingly) he liked them. He also said, "It's very unexpected, the kind of movie it is." (Meaning, it's not a war movie with superhero overtones, wrapped in a mad-science plot device?) And he says this movie sets up the Avengers movie "in a fantastic way." And there's a wish list of actors to play the star-spangled Steve Rogers. [Comic Book Resources]

'Avatar' Star Sam Worthington 'Would Kill to Play Captain America'

It's the understatement of the year to say that reactions were mixed when I posted a story last week wondering aloud about "Avatar" star Sam Worthington's choice of clothing during MTV's live "Avatar" Q&A event. The actor, who starred in the recent "Terminator: Salvation" and will play Perseus in the upcoming "Clash of the Titans" remake, was seen wearing an "Avengers" shirt ? so with tongue firmly planted in cheek, I asked whether it could be possible Worthington was campaigning for a role in "The Avengers" or "Captain America" movies.

The response was, to put it mildly, pretty polarizing. Some sites seemed to get the joke and play along, others took the post a little too seriously ? but in the end, it certainly kicked off discussion of whether the Australian actor could (or should) play one of Marvel's heroes.

Cue the recent "Avatar" junket, and Worthington's arrival at the interview wearing a Captain America t-shirt...

"I'm a fan, mate. That's what it really is," laughed Worthington when asked about the shirt.

However, the actor's criticism of all the sudden "Avengers" attention wasn't directed at being connected to the role ? but instead at all the bloggers who were quick to dismiss him as a candidate.

"All the bloggers dive in and go, 'He's Australian! Damn him, he can't play [Captain America]!'" he told MTV News.

"I 'm a fan. I'm a fan of comics. I'm a fan of Captain America," he explained. "I know they're making the film ? but this is my way of saying, 'Go on and make it then, hurry up!'"

And here's where the conversation entered weird waters, folks. While Worthington said he hasn't talked to anyone at Marvel, he indicated that he has more than a passing interest in playing Marvel's red, white and blue hero.

"As I said, I think I'd be lynched if I played the role, but I'd kill to play it," he said. "There's a headline on the MTV blog: 'Sam Worthington Would Kill To Play Captain America.'"

"I can read it now," he laughed, considering the response he expects to receive if he actively campaigned for the role. "'I don't think so, he can't hold an accent!' ? but I can hold a shield, that's for sure! Go watch Perseus!"

Captain America Targeted for a June Start

Director Joe Johnston, whose next film The Wolfman hits theaters on February 12, revealed to Fangoria that Marvel Studios is planning a June start for The First Avenger: Captain America. The start is mentioned in an article on Johnston taking over as director for The Wolfman:

Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. ?By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three,? recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, which he?s readying for a June start."

Paramount Pictures will distribute The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011. No cast members have been announced yet.

This better take place in World War 2 dammit, I want to see a Nazi decapitated by a thrown shield!

I agree, it has to happen!

who remembers when cappy appeared in Hulk :p

Jeremy Renner as Captain America?

We've heard the rumors about Renner and the role of Hawkeye, but this article has a different view. Take a look!

So we all know about the ongoing "talks" between "The Hurt Locker" star and Marvel about the potential role of Hawkeye in several upcoming films, including "Captain America" and "The Avengers." Renner recently stated that the whole thing was blown out of proportion and that it's still just an idea at this point.

I happened to come across this article over at cinefools.com (sorry if this is a repost) and the writer brings up some interesting points. Here is an exerpt from the article by CineFools:

"Now here is my guess on what he is actually doing. I think Mr Jeremy Renner is actually in talks to play Captain America. With Joe Johnston hoping to start filming in June, they have to have someone in mind or even someone sealed for the deal. As they will have screen test, costume tests and all other pre production thingies that need to be done beforehand. Now that we have this rumor of Hawkeye thrown out and remembering that Marvel are sneaky buggers. This may be the curveball meant to throw us off. Hell, he may have been offered the role of Hawkeye until a screen-test made him perfect for the big man himself. As for the role of Steve Rogers/Capt America he is the right age and build. He has the right screen presence to command authority as well as that square jaw to pull of the outfit. Also there is that Ironman 2 poster rumor that Captain America will be in Ironman 2. If so then they must already have their man.

Now, think of it through Marvel?s eyes. Jeremy Renner is still fresh enough to be cheaper than a big name and he will be able to sign for numerous films. He is also bordering on stardom and this will make him an economical star for a company renowned for its shrewd ways. Also what other films has he signed onto yet apart from wrapping up The Town?"

Director Joe Johnston talks about this film and drops a few new details:

It's not going to be a Captain America that you expect. It's something different. It is influenced by the comic book, but it goes off in a completely different direction. It's the origin story of Captain America. It's mostly period-there are modern, present-day bookends on it-but it's basically the story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. The great thing about Captain America is, he's a superhero without any superpowers. Which is why this story, among the hundreds of superhero stories, appealed to me the most. He can't fly, he can't see through walls, he can't do any of that stuff. He's an everyman who's been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen-the pinnacle of human perfection. How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically? He was this 98-pound weakling, he was this wimp, and he's transformed instantly into this Adonis. You'd think he got everything he wanted. Well, he didn't get everything he wanted. The rules change at that point and his life gets even more complicated and dire. For me, that's the interesting part of the story. It's got some great action sequences in it and some incredible stuff that we've never seen before. But at the heart of it, it's a story about this kid [for whom] all he wants to do is fit in. This thing happens, and he still doesn't fit in. And he has to prove himself a hero ? essentially, go AWOL to save a friend. Eventually, at the very end ? I don't want to give away too much ? but he does fit in. But it's the journey, of getting him there, that's interesting. And it's a lot of fun.

    • Interesting share -- however it does not make sense: Email messages get stored somewhere, so how is Delta Chat "based on email" and decentralized without actually storing anything? By Web3 standard practices, the various Relays would require dedicated storage to make messages available to the recipients (like a large series of message queue channels, akin to racks of traditional post office boxes)... and Contacts must be two-way confirmed in order for encryption keys to be exchanged (ostensibly every key-pair is uniquely bound between sender and recipient) and the Relays would preserve the public keys in order to facilitate message carriage... or every device stores all sorts of keys and contact info. All of this to say, decentralized messaging is like running Bluesky nodes except instead of discovering/browsing public feeds by various posters (at the given node) these Delta Chats would be relaying encrypted messages (via Relays) that only trusted recipients would have the appropriate decryption key (their own private key) to read it. But this doesn't solve the "it's like email" sales pitch. The only way it's like email is that there's encrypted binary stuff being transported from your app into the federated ether of Delta Chat Relays for others to decrypt (hopefully only the intended recipient)... but outside of this federated relays framework, it is absolutely nothing like email.
