Captain America: The First Avenger (July 2011)

You guys do know that Tony makes Captain America's shield right? Seeing that the shield is still the same in the same condition as Iron Man 1, one can only expect that Tony is procrastinating on the shield :p Tony added all sorts of stuff to the original shield so that Captain America would be able to controll it even when in flight etc.

That's where I stop talking as it might spoil something for the movie :p

Chris Evans being cast has already done that :p

Marvel is in final talks with British actor Toby Jones to play the evil scientist Arnim Zola in Joe Johnston?s Captain America: The First Avenger (yes, they flipped around the title ? it use to be The First Avenger: Captain America).

Jones is best known for playing Truman Capote in Infamous, Karl Rove in Oliver Stone?s W., and Swifty Lazar in Frost/Nixon. He also provided the voice of Dobby the House Elf in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He is a very good character actor who has won a number of international awards.

Created by Jack Kirby, Arnim Zola first appeared in Captain America #208 (April 1977). The character has no super powers, but Zola is a scientific genius specializing in genetics and cloning.

He is not only capable of creating exact clone copies of his ?clients?, he has also created monsters which are conditioned to do his bidding.

According to Wikipedia, Arnim Zola was ?a biochemist during World War II who became one of the first human genetic engineers in history after finding papers and equipment used by the offshoot race of humanity, the Deviants. He found a ready home among the Nazi party, who saw his actions as the ability to ensure the existence of a master race.?

One of his first accomplishments was the creation of a brain pattern imprinting device, which would allow someone?s mental essence to be projected into a cloned brain. Zola presented such a gift to Adolf Hitler, creating the Hate-Monger. Zola also used these skills to form a new body for himself, surviving through the war and into modern times. The Red Skull also financed some of Zola?s experiments, allowing Zola to produce such creations as Primus, Doughboy, and Man-Fish. This association led to Zola?s first confrontation with Captain America in the jungles of Central America. Zola has since continued his experiments at various times and locations around the globe. Often, his crimes against humanity bring him into conflict with various heroes, from Captain America to Deadpool.

Jones joins Chris Evans as Steve Rogers (aka Captain America), Sebastian Stan as the Captain?s sidekick Bucky Barnes, Hugo Weaving as the film?s villain Red Skull, and 28-year old British actress Hayley Atwell as the Captain?s World War II girlfriend Peggy Carter. Production is set to begin this Summer in England.

Briefly: We saw Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) in Iron Man 2, played by John Slattery in his best Walt Disney tribute mode. We?ve known that the character would be a part of Captain America: The First Avenger, but not who would play him. Now Dominic Cooper says he?s the man.

Salon talked to Cooper about his work in Tamara Drew, and he confirmed (no quote, sadly) that he?ll play the younger version of the elder Stark in Marvel?s WWII superhero movie.

To recap, Cooper will join Chris Evans, who plays Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury

As rumored, Tommy Lee Jones will act in Captain America: The First Avenger in a still-unknown role. Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter in the Joe Johnston-directed comic book adaptation, confirmed the news to LeicesterSquareTV. You can watch their interview with Atwell using the player below. They start talking about "Captain America" around the 2:20 mark.

Rumors place the "Men in Black" star in the part of General Chester Phillips, the military officer who chooses Steve Rogers for the super soldier program and who aided in his training soon after the serum took effect.

Phillips was retconned into continuity in "Tales of Suspense #63" in 1965, just two years after Captain America was brought to Marvel's forefront as the leader of the Avengers. Phillips remained a character in the Marvel universe until 2003 when he (now retired) was killed by assassins from the underwater rival-to-Atlantis continent Lemuria.

In addition to Atwell, Jones is joining Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Samuel L. Jackson and Dominic Cooper in the July 22, 2011 release.

First Costume Sighting!

Captain America will have two different costumes in the film, according to Johnston. He told the LA Times that he'll have a costume designed by the Army for his initial USO appearances that's slightly more flashy and a nod to the original design. As he gets called into active duty though, Steve Rogers (who hated the original suit design), creates a new costume that's more battle-ready. This second costume is the one I saw and will the primary costume for the film.

The first thing I noticed is that the trademark wings that flank the side of Cap's hood are gone. In fact the "hood" is gone entirely. In its place is a more traditional M1 Army helmet though this helmet does come over the eyes to give Cap a traditional "domino mask" look. Still present is the white "A" in the middle of the hat (nothing fancy, this is the traditional font), though like the rest of the costume, the blue of the helmet is much more muted than the blue in the comic costume. A thick black strap comes down over the ears and connects under the chin.

Cap is wearing a blue neck piece but from what I saw, it's hard to tell if this is connected to something under the helmet or whether it's something like a turtleneck (I'm gonna guess the latter).

On his chest still lies the white star though it's not as prominent as the comic version. The costume is still split horizontally through the middle with blue on top and red and white stripes on the bottom. But instead of stripes, it's actually just a white base with two red utility straps acting as stripes. These straps affix to a metal loop at the midpoint of the chest and a black strap extends up to the shoulders from that point.

His shoulders have pads over them that extend down to about mid-bicep and are attached via a brown strap under the arm. The sleeves (for lack of a better word) are white with a fairly standard brown glove.

The fabric of the costume doesn't look like the scaled material of SPIDER-MAN but more of a leather fabric, like something you'd see on one of the X-MEN. Cap wears an old school utility belt, the likes of which we haven't seen much in modern superhero movies. Utility belts were a staple of comic superheroes but haven't made the transition but here Cap sports a rather thick belt made up of brown pockets with a silver buckle. (It actually looks something like the belt on this Captain America toy.)

As you might expect, there's no codpiece to be found and Cap is wearing blue pants tucked into brown utility boots. The pants aren't skin tight but they aren't baggy either. And for those who are curious, the pants actually have a fly so Cap can take a leak if he needs to.

The suit actually has a practical WWII military look to it with some of the obvious Captain America flourishes that we would expect. It's hard to really pass judgment on a costume until you see it properly lit, in motion and doing what it's meant to do. But based on what I saw, I'm pretty impressed with how they were able to adapt the costume for the film.

As for the shield, it actually hews very closely to the classic design of red/white/red rings with the white star in a blue circle at the middle.

JoBlo got a sneak peek at the studio-approved costume test for Captain America, and this is what they found out about Cap's new "practical fighting" outfit ? not his public-appearance USO duds.

- The shield is the same, but that's about it.

- No more wing tips on the side of Captain's helmet, it's just a plain blue helmet now, but the "A" remains front and center.

- The colors are infinitely softer. It sounds like the blue will be much more of a navy dirty blue.

- No cowl

- The costume material itself appears to be made out of a rough leather ? less Spider-Man, more updated X-Men.

Mike Sampson from JoBlo.com who was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the film costume for the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger posted his description last week and created quite a buzz around the net. Some very artistic readers from the site have submitted art based on his descriptions and he has posted the most accurate for us to see.

This From JoBlo.com....

They're all pretty close to what I saw though everyone seems to have the straps a little off. The helmet on the first sketch below is actually shockingly accurate with the only difference being that you can't see Cap's ear in the film's costume.

Well thats certainly different... can't say I'm a big fan. Although thats probably not surprising anyone at this point.

I wish they went the Batman route, ie. plates of armour vs just stylized stitching.

the-dark-knight-got-milk.jpg

probably not the best example, but a milk loving batman can still kick this nancy's ass.

this movie is going to suck royally

as you being a huge movie buff im shocked you keep saying that rappy. i think the costume looks awesome for a ww2 version. you can't say the movie will tank simply because you do not like chris evens. besides if this move were to suck, there will be no avengers movie then.

^ I'm also a movie buff and think this will suck. It's not just because of Chris Evans, although he certainly isn't helping. The lead role does make a significant impact on the overall film. Think if they cast Tony Stark as I dunno, Jude Law? or someone closer to Evans acting ability, Michael Cera  It would ruin the film. There's more to blame for the cappy catastrophe though, the director, writers, producers. Marvel took a big risk on this one compared to Iron Man, Hulk and Thor. Which is surprising considering how vital Captain America is to The Avengers. If this film tanks it won't affect Avengers release, but it will effectively ruin its lead-in as that is the last Marvel release before it.

Also what makes you think thats the WW2 costume? It's probably the modern one, and if it isn't, I smell black leather like X-Men, which would be all kinds of terrible.

Here?s some good Captain America: The First Avenger casting news: Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Flags of Our Fathers) is reportedly in talks to play the ?Howling Commando? Dum Dum Dugan in Joe Johnston?s film.

Deadline has the ?in talks? news, and if McDonough ends up in the film he?d likely fight alongside Samuel L. Jackson?s Colonel Nick Fury ? at least if we?re going by the commonly-used history of the characters. This could also put McDonough in line to appear in later Marvel movies like The Avengers, depending upon the fate of the Howling Commandos in Captain America.

OK, sure, McDonough is blond and the consistent comic depiction of Dugan is as a round-faced redhead. But McDonough has the right energy for the part, he?s big enough, and everything else is cosmetic, and easily made to fit. (I?ve seen fancasting that hoped for Ted Levine as Dugan, and while I love that, because Levine is great, I think this will work out just fine.)

Here?s the Marvel Wikia rundown of Dugan. Reading this, it?s easy to wonder if he?ll end up being part of a mini-boss fight, and that leads me to wonder if he?ll make it out of the movie alive. Fans will be angry if he doesn?t?

During World War II, while working as a circus strongman, Dugan helps Nick Fury and Sam Sawyer escape the Nazis during a mission. Dugan later joins the British Army, and when Sawyer is charged with creating Fury?s First Attack Squad, also known as the Howling Commandos, Sawyer invites Dugan to become second in command. His exceptional strength saves the day in several of his adventures with the group. During his time with the Howlers Dugan became skilled on all Allied small weapons and gained experience in all forms of hand to hand combat, especially Judo. With his trademark derby, Dum Dum frequently struck fear into the Nazi and Japanese enemies in mission after mission. Such were the Howling Commandos feared by the Third Reich, a counter squad of elite fighters, the Blitzkrieg Squad was formed, and among their number, bar room brawler Siegfried, whose story of defeating six men with his bare hands made it to the ears of Von Strucker, was chosen to stand against Dum Dum Dugan.

This was just delivered to JoBlo HQ from an enigmatic agent known only as 'Victor'. What you see below is purportedly a first look at the teaser poster for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.

This was our first communique from untested spy Victor, and while the names of villain Toby Jones and female lead Hayley Atwell are curiously absent, otherwise the image appears legit. Which means this promotional poster (or a version of it) will be adorning walls, kiosks and buildings at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam later this month.

    • Nvidia GeForce NOW gains support for Dark Scrolls, Empulse, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The final update of June for Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is now available, and it is touting support for six more games. The company is also drawing subscriber attention towards the summer sales kicking off across stores, so they can stock up on more cloud-supported titles. Of course, the Steam Summer Sale is the biggest promotion, which is kicking off later today. "Supported Steam games can be streamed across devices with GeForce NOW, making it easy to buy a game once, keep progress synced and pick up where the gameplay left off on PCs, Macs, handheld devices, phones, TVs and more," says the company. "In other words, the Steam Summer Sale brings the deals; GeForce NOW adds the flexibility." Don't forget that the GeForce NOW summer sale is still active as well. This limited-time offer drops the 12-month Performance membership from $99.99 to $64.99, saving members $35. At the same time, the 12-month Ultimate membership is currently going for $129.99, dropping the price by $70 from the original $199.99. Here are the games joining GeForce NOW's supported list this week: Dark Scrolls (New release on Steam, available June 22) SAND: Raiders of Sophie (New release on Steam, available June 22) Deer & Boy (New release on Steam, available June 23) EMPULSE (New release on Steam, available June 24) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (Steam) FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves (Steam) With the June expansions coming to an end, Nvidia should be announcing its July GeForce NOW plans next week. There is also a limit to how many hours subscribers can use the service per month.
