My Dad Is Looking To Buy A Laptop

Recommended Posts

I have a 5 questions on the Dell XPS 1530;

1. Is the T9500 much better than the T9300? Or will the T9300 do? Or shall I just go for the T8300 (but thats not Penryn right?)

2. High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LED LCD (1440x900) OR Full Hi Definition, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD (1920x1200)... Is there any advantage in getting the Full Hi Definition Screen (it is a cheaper upgrade than the High Resolution screen?)

3. Is it worth it going for 4GB over 3GB?

4. Is the Windows Vista Business Edition SP1 - 32-bit or 64-bit?

5. What is Built-in Wireless USB capability plus Belkin 4-port hub?

Lastly... The 1530 is much better than the Inspiron and the Vostro right?

Much better isn't really a good way to describe it. Unless your dad is planning to do some processor intensive tasks, the T9300 or even the T8300 would do.

Higher resolution means smaller texts and sharper pictures. More screen real estate too.

3. Is it worth it going for 4GB over 3GB?

No. You will rarely use 2gb, let alone 3gb.

4. Is the Windows Vista Business Edition SP1 - 32-bit or 64-bit?

I would say go with 64bit, as you will notice a nice performance boost.

5. What is Built-in Wireless USB capability plus Belkin 4-port hub?

Means you can have a wireless USB hub i think. =/

The xps line is better than the inspiron line for the sole reason that since the xps is their top of the line models you get US based support. Inspiron line gets you india based support.

Also the xps line has gpu's the inspiron 1525 doesn't.

The vostro line gives you US based support too.

The gpu doesn't apply to the XPS m1530. The only gpu differences you would notice will be in the top of the line xps

The three Dell Models are;

1. Dell Vostro M1310

2. Dell XPS 1530

3. Dell Inspiron 1525

4. Dell XPS 1330

Which ones of these are light and have long running batteries and perform really well?

Can someone tell me about these laptops and which is the best?

You said your dad is using Stata and excel. Neither of those are graphic intensive. Stata's site said RAM is the big requirement. If you want to get the longest battery life then don't look at any with dedicated graphics cards. Intel has come a long way on their integrated graphics. If you're going that route, I'm guessing that will rule out the XPS line.

I mean.. is the Windows Vista Business Edition SP1... that Dell offers... is it the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version?

Thanks alot for answering all the questions!

Nah... I think my dad wants to go with the Dell XPS M1530 now... He is getting the better battery so it will last him long enough?

Thanks

Dell will only offer 32bit versions for some stupid reason.

I would say go with the 9cell battery, sure it adds some weight to his laptop, but longer battery life is always a plus

Dell only preinstalls 32-bit unless you get a Precision Workstation

Dell used to hand out x64 media for free but the policy was abruptly changed. Now only business systems qualify

Should the policy change and you want to jump to x64 ... just ring up Tech Support

Truthfully if its for busieness i dont think he needs a totally tricked out laptop i would probably recommend that he get a laptop with decent hard drive space along with a nvida video card and sound blaster sound card and 4gig internal memory and dual core i mean truthfully if you go as high as 3k for a laptop thats a lil excessive i mean my father he has gotten a nice laptop for 1,500$ or so it was a sony vio i mean it had good video card a good sound card could play blue ray dvds and had hdtv ability and had 4gig internal memory and 180 gig hard drive and was also dual core i belive and he got this one month ago from best buy so i mean that should do your needs but to go for 3k is basicly i would say for gaming pc's that require a lot of internal memory. with 3k you could get a nice alien ware machine...

FYI it's this machine SONY VAIO VGN-AR730E you can perform a google search and see the specs on this machine. It's a desktop replacement but if size is not an issue then it would be a great machine that would give Apple's Macbook Pro a run for it's money.

Nah... I think he will go for the XPS as it is more stylish and better reviewed!

Unless... There is a Vostro which is much better???

Hmm, Dell described as stylish...

Vostro is limited by its graphics card power. I think if you want the professional look and power and want to go with Dell, then look at the Latitude series. It's basically like the XPS but better graphics and power all under $2500.

Are you serious that the Latitude is better than XPS? Whichc model of Latitude is better than the XPS M1530 and why?

    • Limited Prime Day deal sees Amazon Echo Show 11 is at its lowest price yet by Ivan Jenic The Amazon Echo Show 11 is currently $149.99 on Amazon during Prime Day, down from $219.99. That's 32% off and $70 saved on Amazon's newest mid-size smart display (purchase link below). As its name suggests, the Echo Show 11 features a 11” Full-HD touchscreen, which is a decent upgrade over the Echo Show 8. It offers 60% more viewing area, which makes a genuine difference for recipes, calendars, video calls, or any other scenario where the smaller display can feel a bit cramped. The Show 11 is built around Alexa+, Amazon's more capable AI assistant that can handle natural conversation. You can make reservations, order groceries, and find content based on your preferences, instead of always having to give it precise commands. There’s also the Omnisense technology, which adds ambient awareness, allowing the device to trigger routines based on temperature, presence detection, or visual cues. Smart home control is built in without needing a separate hub, and the home screen doubles as a photo slideshow when not in use. Taking all of this into account, the Show 11 is a perfect smart addition to your kitchen counter or living room. At $149.99, this is a strong Prime Day buy for anyone already in the Amazon ecosystem or looking to build one out.
