Sir Topham Hatt
Hello Went out on a photo shoot today and for the first time, shot in RAW mode. I don't really notice too much difference to JPEGs, the pictures look a bit less bright and take a while to render in Picture and Fax viewer, but they look all ready for editing. I have Photoshop CS3 but it doesn't like opening my NEF RAW files from my Nikon D60 :/ The error is gives is "not the right kind of file", but I thought CS3 was supposed to cope with loads of file types, including RAW. Even when I choose "Open As" then it gives me the NEF file format but then throws up another error. I bought a magazine which reviewed three RAW editing studios: Adobe Lightroom, Aperture 2 and Capture One, but I don't really want to install yet another piece of software on my PC. I usually use Corel Paint Shop Pro, but have gotten more and more used to Photoshop (as I want to migrate, but it's hard). Is there something I am missing from Photoshop for it to read the NEF files properly? Or so I really need to install something new? What would you suggest? giga Veteran Posted May 31, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2008 Run Adobe Updater. You need the latest Camera Raw for D60 support. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/640473-raw-editors/#findComment-589446204 Share on other sites
Pink Floyd Veteran Posted May 31, 2008 Veteran Share Posted May 31, 2008 since you own a D60 from Nikon, Capture NX is the way to go! Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/640473-raw-editors/#findComment-589446303 Share on other sites
ddtt21958
You can browse your images in Bridge (comes bundled with PS) and use Camera Raw to make adjustments and then from there, open the images in PS to further edit (if needed). giga Veteran Posted June 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 1, 2008 You can browse your images in Bridge (comes bundled with PS) and use Camera Raw to make adjustments and then from there, open the images in PS to further edit (if needed). Wouldn't matter as Camera Raw needs to be updated first to recognize the nefs. I prefer Lightroom to Bridge anyhow as it's nice to not have to open PS for small touchups and corrections. Sir Topham Hatt
So you think Lightroom is the way to go? Is it easier to use than bridge? I figured the answer as in the problem pages, they had exactly the same question, I was gobsmacked! ddtt21958
Lightroom was designed by software engineers and photographers. It's much more streamlined with a smoother workflow and geared exclusively as a photo catalog. You can edit all meta data and make global adjustments to your RAW images. Think of it as a darkroom to printroom. Bridge is a media browser that supports RAW. There is really no learning curve other than keyboard shortcuts. moloko
Yeah if you plan to take many photos LR is the way to go. PS is great but the work flow is much faster in LR. Of course there is not every feature in LR as PS. I still find myself using PS for a few photos . fourcolourblack
hi everyone. i've just joined to try and crack this problem. i have a D40, and my boss a D40x of which i can open the RAW files no problem from Bridge CS3. we just got a new camera in the office which is a D60. i'm getting the same error messages which says the file format is unrecognised. i'm about to restart after the software update from apple and i'll let you know if this has solved the problem. fourcolourblack
ok it did work. although i was wrong in thinking it had anything to do with apple (what was i thinking) this is the link to the latest Camera Raw from Adobe, why don't they have this as an update directly through Bridge or something? http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3895 Be sure to Purge to cache in Bridge to get them to work though, otherwise you'll be left wondering why it didntt work Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/640473-raw-editors/#findComment-589455744 Share on other sites
