I'm upgrading my glass and this seems to be a perfect everyday lens to have on. Makes a lot of other lenses just obsolete to have since it has the wide angle 18 then the 200 zoom. My question is that I have a D40x, so I don't have the internal autofocus motor and on Ken Rockwell's site he says the 18-200 doesn't have a motor so it won't be compatible for autofocus with the D40's, but Amazon has it saying "Af-s" meaning it has an internal motor, is this an updated version of the lens? Will this work with the D40x?

It's a superzoom--you can't necessarily say that it makes all other lens obsolete as it won't have distinguished results since it has to cover such a wide range.

If you want flexibility with its 11x range, then it's definitely a good buy. But otherwise, you can generally find more optically sound lens (though with a smaller range) for the same price (if not better).

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 is what I would consider for an excellent "everyday" lens. Yes, it's nowhere near the large range, but it beats it in sharpness, distortion, and speed (aperture).

Basically, if you're going for a Nikkor 18-200, go for the 18-200mm VR, this will work on your D40x because it has the focus mechanism in the lens.

It sure is a great lens and it gives your awesome results, but as others said, I prefer lenses with smaller ranges though better quality at what they do. The 18-200 excels because it has a good performance throughout everything it can do, however, I still think the suggested Tamron does do 17-50 better that the 18-200 and for example a 70-200 will do that better...

It all comes down to what you want to use it for and what you're willing to spend. Don't get me wrong the 18-200 is by no means bad! On the contrary, it's great if you ask me, THE walk-around lens for people who don't want to switch lenses a lot. I just think it'd be a "waste" of money if you're going to use it to shoot pretty much everything in the 18-50 region or 50-200 region, you could get better lenses for that specifically.

    • yeah it seems to be Edge only. The dialog buttons work as expected in Chrome and Firefox. The phone is using Android 16 (OneUI 8.5) and Edge version  149.0.4022.53
    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
