Wii Fit flops in Japan. Gamers quit after buying

Recommended Posts

One of the reasons health clubs stay in business is by signing up people to yearly contracts.

What they know and the general public doesn't know is that a great majority of people who do sign up only attend about 57 days out of the full year while some drop out completely, thus affording more space in the gym for more people to sign up and fail to show.

It seems that Wii Fit, at least in Japan, is taking on similar characteristics in consumer behavior. According to ITMeida of Japan, a poll was taken by a group of 1000 gamers that showed a staggering amount of people not using the Wii Fit game shortly after purchase.

The question presented to the gamers was:

Do you use Wii Fit faithfully everyday?

- 22% - I record my progress faithfully everyday

- 6% - Maybe once every two or three days

- 6% - Once a week

- 64% - Stopped using after purchase

With over half of the respondents (64%) indicating that Wii Fit started to gather dust after purchase, the survey seems to substantiate studies which show that people who sign up to health clubs overestimate how much time they will really dedicate in exercising. In this case, it seems to also hold true for Wii Fit.

No doubt, there will be a plentiful supply of used Wii Fit games flooding the market if this trend keeps up. If you are interested in buying this game, it might make sense to buy it at the used- discounted rate...that is, if you really plan to use it regularly.

The title is misleading.

The game has sold over 2.5 million in Japan and still going strong.

Just because gamers (myself included) are lazy after buying the game, it doesn't make it a flop.

Most games released are stop being played 7 months after it's been released... I don't see the big deal. Any percentage of people who play the game regularly/daily 7 months after release is a good percentage.

Yeah, this goes for games in general, not just WiiFit. You can't expect gamers to continue play their favorite game every single day a month after their purchase. We all have things to do.

But 64% stopped playing it completely though. That tells you the replay value of the game is excruciatingly low in many peoples eyes. The novelty of the game is gone.

It's like an exercise tape but with no hot chicks in tight clothing.

Fixed.

Happens to everything on the Wii for me (gathers dust).

There really isn't enough great SP experiences. I use my Wii when my friends are over, but that's about it.

It's absolutely dying for Animal Crossing, or something I can sink time into myself.

Animal Crossing is an odd one. I thought I would hate it when I picked up a used copy for the Gamecube, but that was two years ago and I still play it at least once or twice a week. I hope they go all-out on the Wii one and let you send your animals to visit friends over the internet and what-not. :)
