id have a 360 if it wasnt for the gash controller... ****ing hate it.

its huge, heavy, and imo poorly laid out

oh and you can use a mouse & keyboard on unreal 3 just fine

The 360 pad is one of the most comfiest joypads ive ever used, the triggers are perfect, the analogue sticks are in the perfect place, the only thing that lets it down is the dpad, the Dualshock 3 is far too small, the triggers are crap unless you buy a 3rd party set of trigger extensions.

The pad works. End of. I enjoy using it, as do many millions of others. You two (and more) don't. Great.

Yes it works, but it could be so much better. The shape was good when it first came out, but then they just shoveled the analogs in there without even rethinking the layout.

You say millions enjoy using it but maybe that's not the case. All these years with the same controller, and people didn't actually have a choice did they? The analogs should be placed more ergonomically, and don't even get me started on the new triggers.

Bottom line: Eating with just a fork also works, but once you've had a go with a knife on the side it's really hard to go back.

I like them both, and can use them both fine in FPS/all games.

I must be special :p

The only thing I don't like about the PS3 controller is downwards sloped triggers. Except from that it works fine for me, and so does the 360 controller.

I would like some more PS3 FPS games to use KB/Mouse though - Even if it means KB/M servers/matchmaking only to make it fairer on people only using pads.

You can buy a device for the PS3 that lets you use KB/Mouse with every game mind you,

It's pricey though.

Make it three ;). I have used PS2 controller to play KillZone ( :x ) and Chaos Theory. It sucked. You like it. Great.

Wow, this thread and the responses really blows my mind.

My first thought was "And you guys call yourself Gamers???"

What I mean by that is I have seen a whole, whole lot of different controllers over the years, and you just learn to use them, and all of them serve their purpose once you use them.

Do not get me wrong, I prefer the XBox 360 controller as well, to me it is the best controller design bar none, but I am not going to sit here and say the PS3 controller is horrible, that would just be nonsense.

I mean seriously, the PS controller has been fine for so many years (since 1995 more or less), and while again, I so also feel that the 360 controller is overall the better controller, that does all of a sudden mean that the PS controller always sucked.

My point is while one may be better, the other is hardly not usable, not even close.

And my biggest beef with the PS3 is not even the analog sticks, , my beef is with the shoulder buttons, I much prefer the largeness and placement of the triggers on the 360 controller.

For real though, those who are saying you cannot play an FPS on the PS3, that is rubbish, and I am calling you on it. :p

When my 360 died for the second time and COD4 had just come out, I actually played COD4 on the PS3 for 29 days. It took me a few hours, but I got used to the controller and played just as well as if I was using a 360 controller. And I am not some gaming god either. Seriously, I had not a single issue with the controller after just a few hours using it. I also did feel the analog sticks were slightly more precise than the 360 (just slightly)

Especially knowing you guys and how good you are at FPS's, I really think you are just talking smack for the sake of talking smack in this regard, I really do. All of you are quite capable of using the PS3 controller in an FPS, and using it extremely well.

Again, I prefer the 360 controller as well, but I am disputing the fact that some of you are saying the PS3 controller is garbage. We are all entitled to which controller we prefer, and I even think most would say they prefer the 360 controller, that is fine, but saying the PS3 controller cannot be used and is so horrible, really dismisses not only that it has server its purpose the past 13 years, but it also dismisses the fact that it is a perfectly capable controller.

I agree with DL, the PS controller had its own issues but the only problem I had with it was sometimes my hands would knock over the other analog stick during intense playing, but that was it. I have never own a PS or a PS2 but I have played a lot on it, from games such as Zone of the Enders, Resident Evil, Black and Killzone and I enjoy using it. That being said, I do believe the Xbox 360 controller is the better one, but only because it is newer, and in a way more ergonomic. I do remember buying a plastic analog stick to strap over the dpad on the original PS controller to make it more usable. However, that does not make the PS controller bad. It does make it in need of an update, as it has gone on too long without a redesign, but again it has serve us well during the years.

totally agree DL

In retrospect I seem to belong to a minority who really like the N64 controller over nearly anything else since

I found it hard to use at first.

But like every controller of every console I've used, I got used to it fairly quickly and didn't have any problems (Y)

I don't think I've ever actually said a controller is unusable in my entire gaming career.

I never actually owned an N64 by the way, but some of my mates did and we played GoldenEye all the time :D

QFT. As I've said many, many times - it's all down to personal preference which you may prefer, but at the end of the day both pads work, and work well at what they were designed to do.

I couldn't agree more about the 360's d-pad being awful (I own one so calm down), and it really does impact - for example mixing up night vision and UAV recon on COD4. That said, when I play on my friends PS3, I miss the triggers/stick position that I think make the 360's pad far superior to the PS3 pad.

I don't think the PS3 pad is completely garbage, but it needs a major update. I've been over this topic so many times in the past with members I didn't really put any time into my reply, but I guess I may as well reitterate my thoughts for the noobs to the forum.

1: I hate the position of the analog sticks. Them make absolutely no sense where they are. As someone has already pointed out they were tacked on years later to the controller after it was already designed and they've pretty much stayed there ever since. Placing the sticks in the centre creates discomfort and inbalance. Larry can call me out on this, but I bet for instance I could reach 600/700 points on Battlefield and come nowhere near to the same score on the PS3. Sure, I'd still get a high score in terms of other players maybe, but I wouldn't best myself.

2: The triggers. Worse.decision.ever. They are just bleh. When a third party comes out with trigger add-ons, you know the design sucks. I can use them sure, but your fingers are much more likely to slip. Also, they are too wide but not "tall" enough. The rectangle shape is all wrong (N)

3: The overall shape. It used to be great when I was younger because my hands were smaller and I didn't have a problem at all. Many complained how the Xbox Duke controller was too big. Once upon a time that is how I used to think of the PS1/2 controllers. I loved the size back then, and I love the Duke controllers. Now, when I'm older, the design digs into your palms and just isn't ergonomically pleasing. It's one thing Sony have got worse at over the years also (e.g PSP's shape). Both cause major cramps in your hand in a very short amount of time.

There is a few smaller issues I have with the controller, but they are easier to look over. Those 3 reasons I have given are the ones which cause me issues the most.

Okay, I'll call you out on this. :p

You get used to what you have to when you have to, you are doubting the power of wanting to play a video game well and if I recall correctly you have never had the displeasure of not having your 360 for over a month.

I am in the same boat as you, I prefer to play on my 360 whenever possible, but having played a few FPS's on the PS3 including a month straight of COD4, if I can play it just as good, I believe anyone can.

On top of that, what do you think of me saying you potentially may even get a HIGHER score?

I used to get a Higher Score on the PS3 in COD4 than I actually got on the 360, not even kidding.

And the people who love Sony would be more than happy with a J-shaped controller with 1 button and backwards motion sensing.

The design of the controller has reached its expiration date, don't blame us for wanting something new.

Yeah absolutely.

The PS2 wasn't overly criticized for it's controller because it wasn't a console with a wealth of FPS games. For some reason that is the PS3's main genre right now and for people that have played countless hours of FPS games on 360 controllers, it's tough, at least for me because with the left analog stick the same height as the right, it just feels awkward.

  Sethos said:
You keep mentioning the fact you had to use the PS3 controller for a month, like we ought to give it a chance?

It did not take me a month to get used it it, one or two days tops.

My point in sharing the month part is after a full month with it, I never questioned it again, and I at one point started a thread asking if there was a way to get a 360 controller working on the PS3.

You know what though, I really could care less, if you all cannot play with the PS3 controller, that just means I will own you all in Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. :p

Just to throw something out there, I had a PS1 and a PS2 like many other people did ... I've used those Controllers for over 10 years in everything from RTS to FPS games.

I know how the controller works, I played online games with it on the PS2, I have enough 'experience' with the thing that allows me to call it a rubbish controller at this point. Not saying you can't play games with them, just saying the 360 controller does it about a 100 times better.

Me not liking a controller has nothing do with my "not being a gamer" or how you put it, it's all about comfort. Even back in the PS2 days, I couldn't play more than two hours tops before my hands cramped up from the design, how can you focus on the game when you feel like sawing off your hands?

To make matters worse, they took 13 year old design and made it worse by ruining the shoulder buttons - That's quite an accomplishment :|

I agree, I don't like the PS3 controller either and I've had a PS1, PS2, and now PS3. They really need to change it up.

I hate it when people claim that you don't have enough experience with it. Listen, I've been using Sony consoles for 10yrs now, I think I have enough experience with the controller.

It's time for a new one, or at least a redesign.

  popisdead uk said:
So you didn't like the PS1 and 2 pad either? .

The controller was perfect in the PS1 days, PS2 days got a bit worse, specially in the later years - I had high hopes for the PS3 controller, something like changing the size or the design, but no such luck.

It's a curse to have big hands.

Why keep buying Sony products if you can't stand the control method? It really doesn't make sense.

Just so you can ask that question time and time again :)

You do know the PS2 had the majority of alternate genres compared to the XBox. The XBox only had a couple racing games and a few good FPS's with the occasional action game where the PS2 had RPG, Action and Racing games out the wazoo. Everyone had a PS2 back then. Even I did until mine broke from a 1ft fall.

The pad isn't bad for RPG's, but we were talking about FPS games here. The PS2 also had tons of great games, so of course it makes sense to play them regardless of the controller. :)

QFT, I bought my PS1 in 1996 I think? Something like that, and bought the DS1 when it first launched. Back then it was fine because my hands weren't so large, but trying to play FPS has always been **** on the PS1/2/3. If they moved the left stick to where the d-pad is, I could put up with it. Doubt it will ever happen though.
