Recently, 3D Realms has released the source code to thier game called Shadow Warrior under the GPL. Only the source code is GPL, the data files for Shadow Warrior, just like Duke3d, are commerical which means that you can only download the source code for Shadow Warrior. Downloading the data files for the game is illegal which means that you have to purchase Shadow Warrior.

Hi there,

I've mailed SSG if they still offer the free download of their game The Ardennes Offensive - couldn't find it on their new site.

I also finally mailed Bob Bates about Gateway, if it's freeware or not. I don't think so, but maybe we'll get a confirmation.

I also mailed the admin of bombs-away.net, who have had - I think it's legal - free download of the old B-17 Flying Fortress by Microprose. The site is now on a hiatus, it seems.. I sent a query if they're going to host the file in the future.

Hopefully, I'll get some replies.

Let's keep our fingers crossed about the Star Trek game. :)

Well, it turns out that the download of B-17 Flying Fortress is infact not legal. This was reported over at the Liberated Games forum by forum member JimBobStuart & here is what he wrote:

After a little digging I have found out that this game is not liberated, even though its was available for free download for a number of years. The rights to the code have been sold to shockwave who are rebuilding and improving the game for new release.

The game is still available through the link in the post above but this is not a legal download and as the rights have been bought for release there is little chance of seeing this game released in the near future.

Good game though.

3D Rad is a shareware game creation system but the company did release a new freeware version. The freeware version can be downloaded from http://www.3drad.com/dloadfre.htm . The freeware version can't compile games & you have to release your games as freeware.

3D Rad originally began as freeware software but after it became popular, the author's decided to sell 3D Rad as shareware. I played with the original 3D Rad which was released as freeware around 1997/1998. I'm still searching for the original 3D Rad which is 3D Rad 1.01 because it is freeware & you can compile your games with it even though it is very old.

Well, I found the original freeware release of 3DRAD from 1998. You can download it from http://www.filelibrary.com/Contents/Windows/115/1.html . 3DRAD originally began as a freeware game creation system then it became shareware after the software became popular. Remember, this is the original release of 3DRAD, this is not the same as the newer shareware releases of 3DRAD.

A French company named LOGITRON who made games during the 1990's for the Atari ST system of computers have released several of their games for free download (they use the term abandonware for their games). Their games which were released for free download (on 10/1/2004) are SHEER AGONY, AAZOHM KRYPHT & OPERATION SKUUM. The games can be downloaded from http://logitron.atari.online.fr/list_english.htm & you read about why this company decideded to re-release 3 of their Atari ST games for free download at http://logitron.atari.online.fr/abandonware_english.htm .

The people who run JAY Software released (in 2002) there game called ZebuLand along with the editor as freeware. This is an Atari ST game & it can be download from http://phoenix.inf.upol.cz/~opichals/jay/stgames.htm#zebu . I'm guessing that this prog used to be shareware since in the page above under Zebuland level editor it says "The registered ZebuLand was included level editor", so this sounds like Zebuland was once shareware.

i've got a install of the original gta1 here, when zipped the install directory is only 28mb

seeing as its available for free download, is it legal for me to post that up?

The answer is no. Even though Rockstar has GTA1 avaliable for free download, only Rockstar is allowed to distrubute the game for download. Basically put, you can't upload your version of GTA1 because that is illegal.

The reason the GTA download clocks in at 300 MB is that everything from the original GTA CD version is there. Your version is a rip, that means that stuff was removed by shady groups in order to facilitate downloads in the days before broadband services became widely available. Additionally, the big download has been updated to be more compatible with modern operating systems and as such takes advantage of "new" technology such as DirectX.

To Eugene and evktalo: thanks for holding the fort while I've been inactive on this board.

Ok this is a strange question but does anyone have idea what game I'm about to describe is:

It was 3D shooter kind of, we ran it on MS-Dos, you had like a glove that was like Liono's from Thundercats:

liono1bq.jpg

only it had claws not like...gem things...and from what I can just about remember; you fought these browny upright standing sort of monsters to begin with.

I can barely remember this game, my Dad woul load it up for me when I was about 6 or 7. If I could play it again the nostalgia would be awesome, anyway sorry that's so vague, anybody any idea?!

You description is very vague but you could be referring to the game called Hexen. Hexen is a shareware FPS developed by Raven Software & distrubuted by ID Software. You can download the shareware version of Hexen from http://www.dosgames.com/g_3d.php .

This might be the game you're referring to but your description is very vague.

*hmph*

well this came directly from a legal CD install, i'm telling you. and the game doesnt need compatibility crap, works fine on XP. the original CD version has modes up to 800x600 anyway.

Anyone know where I can download a game called Bug! if anyone remembers it?

It was a game where you were a bug tryingto rescue his family and friends from evil bugs. Any help on where to get it would be greatly apprecieated.

I checked for this title of at Home Of The Underdogs & they mention that this game was released in 1996 by Sega which means that this game was avaliable commerically which means that downloading this game is illegal which means that we can't give you any download links to this game.

Found a good one so nevermind.

Well, even though you mention that we shouldn't mind your post, I will tell you where to find many freeware arkanoid games. Goto http://gamehippo.com/search/search_advance...809ef0b47.shtml

Gamehippo is a site devoted to nothing but freeware games.

I'm looking for a game that I used to play on a demo disk. Of what I can remember, you were a kid and the first level was a "scary" dark level outside and you had to rescue animals using a slingshot as your weapon. I'm thinking Halloween Harry but it's not that. The word Halloween rings a bell but I could be wrong. It was a side scroller game with not bad graphics. Anyone remember it?

    • If its the devs fault you would think Unreal would help M$ take full advantage of Unreal and work with them to fix the performance issues. Otherwise they are catching unwarranted bad press.
    • Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give my current GPU a clean and then run the benchmarks to see how similar it is. Hopefully a bit of a clean-out will help it last a bit longer.
    • Pretty sure those will still be in this game. The series' well-explored psychosis themes will return as well.
    • "performance issues? what performance issues?!"
    • Microsoft making much needed change to Windows 11, 10 Patch Tuesday security updates by Sayan Sen Recently, Microsoft delivered its latest Defender patches for Windows 11 ISOs. These definitions are released from time to time alongside the general security updates available during Patch Tuesday. Speaking of Defender, the company has now announced another important change that affects how security updates are delivered to enterprise devices running Windows. According to a recent announcement, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's endpoint detection and response (EDR) updates will no longer be bundled with the monthly Windows security updates or Patch Tuesdays. Instead the company is shifting delivery of these updates to Microsoft Update, bringing EDR servicing in line with several other Microsoft Defender components. If you recall, Microsoft last year moved PowerShell updates to Microsoft Update (MU) as well since it provides automatic updates for Microsoft products and services. Thus the move is intended to allow Microsoft to deliver EDR improvements and security enhancements independently of the OS's regular monthly update cycle; this should enable faster deployment of protection updates without requiring organizations to wait for the next Patch release. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's EDR capabilities are designed to help organizations detect, investigate, and respond to advanced threats across managed devices. Keeping these components updated is critical for maintaining protection against evolving attack techniques. The rollout has already began for Windows 10 devices in late May 2026 (last month) and Microsoft says it will gradually expand support to Windows 11 and the remaining supported Windows versions over the coming months. The company expects deployment across Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be completed by fall 2026 or around Q3 of this year. Once the transition is complete, EDR updates will be delivered through Microsoft Update using KB5005292, provided the required prerequisite updates have already been installed. Microsoft is also introducing a new Defender Update Service as part of the change. Following installation of the first update, devices will automatically create a new directory located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Microsoft Defender\Defender Update. Microsoft notes that restarts may occasionally be necessary in case of "rare" failure scenarios. For most organizations, the tech giant says no action will be required as long as Microsoft Update is already permitted within their update management strategy. Admins who rely on manually deployed update packages, however, will need to adjust their processes to ensure the new Defender update package is included. Microsoft also recommends reviewing internal documentation and notifying helpdesk and security operations teams about the updated delivery mechanism to avoid confusion during the transition. As a prerequisite, the tech giant notes that systems must be running Sense version 10.8798.25857.1000 or later and have one of the following Windows updates (or later) installed: Win11 24H2 KB5062660 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 23H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 22H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 22H2 KB5062649 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 1809 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2019 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2022 KB5063880 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2025 KB5063878 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) As always, organizations should verify that their update policies align with the new servicing approach before the broader rollout reaches all supported Windows platforms later this year. In case of major problems, the EDR update can be rolled back to the inbox version stored in %ProgramFiles%\\Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) using: MpCmdRun.exe -RevertMde -Product Edr -ToVersion Inbox For those who have access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, you can view the message here under ID MC1381119.
